I caught a bit of a Stretford Paddock interview with Henry Winter the other day, and he too seemed pretty sure it's a contract ploy from Varane.

Strong reports the past couple of days though innit?

But the "still hasn't made up his mind" thing tells me he's still holding out for a better offer from Real.
Yeah you either want to leave or not the wishy washy still thinking about it bs always comes up when a footballer wants a better contract.

On Mirror it seems:

Real Madrid intend to make the negotiation process extremely difficult for Manchester United in their attempts to sign Raphael Varane.

This gonna drag on I think.

No idea why Real would do that, they need the money to move on and sort their defence out.
Maybe the fax machine? Or they hope if it drags on for too long we may move to other targets?

And what? He just signs then?
That’s not gonna happen, he’ll just go for free next season.
Would serve no purpose other than shooting themselves in the foot.
They pay him what he wants, or they sell him asap. (they’ll pay him me thinks)

Interesting looking at the percentage of aerial duels the Madrid CBs won over previous seasons compared to our own.

Maguire: 77.5%, 73.7%, 78.2%, 70.5%
Lindelof: 65.7%, 66.0%, 65.1%, 33.3%
Varane: 75.3%, 71.8%, 77.0%, 73.8%
Ramos: 56.9%, 59.5%, 71.6%, 61.0%

Two thoughts.

1) A Varane + Maguire partnership should be very secure in the air.

2) What the hell is wrong with Sergio Ramos?

Aren't you bound to lose a few aerial duels when you score 5+ headers a season?

Stats likely include offensive ariel duels I imagine, regarding Ramos who is always looking to score.

Could be, though I would have expected him to have competed in more aerial duels than Varane in that case whereas it seems to be the opposite.

Shows why you shouldn't take stats at face value I suppose. "Lindelof better in the air than Sergio Ramos" isn't an opinion I'd want to endorse.

I've gone from "I refuse to believe..." to "can we ban all the naysayers please".

Ramos is not dominant in the air. He is great offensively because he has great timing etc but clearing it defensively is something different. Look at Maguire who is world class at clearing in the air but below average offensively. 46% of Ramos aerial attempts this season were offensive which is a high amount for a CB.

And no stats like this don’t tell the whole true. I also believe they are wrong actually, but ha don’t checked. Do they include all matches or only league matches?

If they want to make it 'extremely difficult' we'll just wait for January and get him on that pre-contract agreement. Let's not get ourselves in a tangle with that lot over nothing. I don't think we need to sign him this summer.

We can get another midfielder this summer instead.

The more this drags on the more likely he’s fishing for a new deal imo. If he’s truly serious about getting out of Madrid then this will be concluded rather quickly.

It’s just Spanish media spin. How dare someone want to move on from Real Madrid. It’s all down to what Varane wants to do.

Not my cup of tea to be honest. I am in the direction and train of CB legends Inter and Brazil Lucio and Jaap Stam. In others words. I don’t get fear factor play against Varane. Like you have to walk over my dead body. A door security or bodyguard. A CB is the bodyguard of the goal and castle. Stop in all kind of way. But still on a fair way. Not try to hurt players on purpose. But it’s same mentality. Defend your goal and castle. If you concede more goals than opponents. Then you have lost your castle and the match.

But I understand. The factor can be 1 year left. A lower price tag. Second Ole has to deliver and has to aim for premier league title. No excuse this season. Third full season. United goal shall be premier league title. Reason why he will go for a safer and lesser risk choice like Varane. A established CB.
For me age doesn’t. Unproven on to level doesn’t matter. As long as I know you are good enough and has what it demand to become a starting line up for a premier league winning team.

But beside Varane. Get a really good ball playing CM like Aurélien Djani Tchouaméni or Locatelli or both will help a lot for CB and defend too. Been able to keep the ball longer in the team. Then it will goes longer for opponents teams to create chances.

Varane or Tiago Djalo are not only ones left. A top CM is needed. Special if Pogba is leaving too. Then United need two new CM.

Same for ball possession City and Pep. It help Dias and City defend too.

So Pogba situation is not fixed yet. But still a really good CM is needed.

But again. Isolated stand point of view. Varane is not my type of CB. I want fear factor. Neither Maguire. A want a aggressive beast of CB. On a fair way. Aggressive, but composure and balance.
