Utterly infuriating and ridiculous that he went to the Euros for about 67 seconds of playing time.

He should have has this surgery months ago.
I mean he very nearly came away with a Euros winners medal... So was definitely worthwhile from his point of view I imagine.

Good for him. He's a top asset for our club and we need to protect him for the long run. A fully fit Rashford is amongst the best in the world in his position.

I don’t for one minute doubt that he is, but everyone knew he wasn’t fit and Southgate would have known he had no intention of using him so the sensible thing for all involved would have been communication to that effect to enable him to get the surgery he’s clearly needed for what feels like a good year.
I agree that Southgate is a massive cnut.

Good, excited to see a refreshed version of him.

Hopefully, Greenwood has had a good summer off to recover from his injury too.

Greenwood, Martial, Sancho. We've got the resources now to cope with him missing for a couple of months.

Good news that he’s actually putting his health first for once (finally!). Thank god we signed Sancho so early. Rashford’s absence will be cushioned a lot with him around.

...hope he takes every bit of time needed. Well deserved recovery period for him. If done right, it will prolong his playing career by a few years. In a sense, this could turn out to be one of the most important moments of his career.

Yep, going to the Euros especially, and Ole overplaying him all year, were massive stupid mistakes.

Wasted 3 months of football next season for the glamour of 10 minutes of football and missing a penalty. Southgate shouldn't have picked him if he knew the extent of his injury troubles whilst not planning to play him.

Also makes you question just how competent our the medical teams are United and England.

Correct decision though in hindsight he should have just done it during the Euros since Southgate never played him.

Although I understand why he didn't.

Sancho Cavani Greenwood likely our starting front 3 for the first few months.

Martial and Amad the backups. Still very strong.

Great news. Finally have the depth to cover this, rest up, recover properly and then come back ready to smash it next season. Sancho/Martial/Greenwood to crush it in the meantime.

Totally support the decision, he needs to get fully healthy. Good thing we brought in Sancho - should also give us pause about sending Amad out on loan if that was in the cards.

Good decision. He was so overplayed as well, so the break can only do him good

Couldn't agree more. I was saying for months Rashford shouldn't have gone to the Euro's. Think he was in the top 5 for minutes played all round Europe last season and was knackered, was carrying multiple injuries and it was a position England were extremely well stocked in (Grealish, Foden, Sancho, Sterling). Everyone, England included would have been better off if he had rested and got the op sooner.

Good luck Rashy! Seems to have a couple of different things he was playing through - he had a stress fracture in his back (not sure if they actually ended up doing a surgery there), a floating bone in his ankle and now his shoulder.

Probably going to be super frustrating to not be playing football after that final loss but a well deserved rest.

Yeah, Euros was a bad decision then all things being equal.

Hope he comes back fresh and raring to go.
He definitely shouldn’t have gone to the Euros. Got to sympathise though because the prospect of missing out when England could have won their first tournament since 66 would be horrible.

Hopefully surgery all goes well and he is back to his best by Christmas!

Why wait until end of the month ?

He could have had it in this week so a 2 weeks early retuen could help our season in September rather than waiting for him until October

Good call. He’s been out of sorts for so long, he’s clearly been playing through it. Did his back in as well didn’t he?

I wish him all the best in his surgery and post-recovery.

On a lighter note, did anyone else chuckle when they read " However, the surgeon is not available until the end of July. " from the BBC article:

ffs surely there's some envelopes that can be pushed to free up apparently the only man in the world capable of doing this surgeries schedule?

I can’t blame the player for wanting to go. If Southgate had no intention of actually using him then he should’ve advised Rashford to get the surgery.

Thank feck for that. He needs the rest as well.

It does mean if we get rid of Martial we can't get by without another striker though.

Hopefully surgery all goes well and he is back to his best by Christmas!
Plus with him knowing at the time that the group games (at least) would be mostly played at home, it was realistically his best chance of playing in a 'home' Euros during his playing career. I imagine he was told he was unlikely to get much game time but wanted to be with the squad for such a huge occasion. Making it to the final was probably worth it for him.

I’d say Rashford really wanted to play and Southgate really wanted him in the squad in case of injuries and an option off the bench. As it turned out nobody got injured and England didn’t need him off the bench until the final. Which was obviously a disaster.

Still, though, it’s easy to see why bringing him made sense in the context of giving England every possible chance of winning the Euros. Which was all that Rashford and Southgate were thinking about at the end of the season.
