The latest development is that we will bid 60m Eur next week right? If so that's not anything new surely. And not foregone they'd accept given they seem to want min 50 sterling? Or was that EUR..

Nah we refuse to pay it and finally sign Gaitan on a freebie and bring him out of retirement, after chasing him for the last decade.
I'd still celebrate, provided its a double announcement with Sneijder.

I'm mostly sceptical because of the big intangible: motivation. It seems obvious that Madrid and France have reached the end of their cycle, the elite players have lost that edge, and Varane's a very visible part of both. There really isn't any evidence that United has the kind of atmosphere to turn that around, and there is historical evidence that we're quite good at doing the opposite.

If he was able to get that edge back then I'd be delighted. Such a good partner for someone like Maguire on paper. But for Varane, United is a step down from Real, Manchester is a step down from Madrid, Ole is a step down from Zidane. The only thing we have in our favour at the moment is a group of players that are mostly on the up, and Varane could relish the role of leading them from challengers to winners, in a way that Ramos did for him.

The idea that he'll be motivated by a new challenge by default is just not true unfortunately. He could be coming here for a pay day, he could be coming here to have less pressure, he could just be coming here because he's being forced out and no-one else can afford him. We've had all three scenarios before with big names coming from bigger European clubs and ultimately being a disappointment as a result. I think people ignore that because accepting it would mean acknowledging the fact United are not a top-tier club for elite players outside the UK. Sir Alex recognised that and tailored his transfer strategy accordingly, since then people like Woodward have ignored that reality and been stung multiple times.
And it could be the total opposite to what you've just said. No one knows what's in his mind.

Pretty strange for you to decide what his motivations are and speak as if it's gospel?

Also a bit daft saying United aren't a top tier club outside of the UK when they are one of the biggest clubs in the world.

Begs belief that fans still can’t spell some players’ names correct, even after they’ve been here for 5 years

Anybody who thought Madrid would happily accept 50 mill Euros are mad. Will be closer to 60m for sure
Lot of room for negotiation. He has 1 yr left and if he really wants to leave, it could very well be 50m€ . We might pay up to close the deal but not at all crazy to think we could get him for 50m€

Wholeheartedly agree. Remember people were getting super excited with Di Maria, Sanchez or Schweinsteiger only to later say it was poor planning by the club, which it was, and that they wouldn't have signed them.

This does feel like that.
Di Maria was forced out of Madrid to the last team he wanted to join when PSG was his first choice
Bastian was in his 30s and already finished. He was down the pecking order at Bayern too
Sanchez 6 months prior to joining was not performing at the same level and even Arsenal fans were saying Utd wouldn't be getting the same player
Varane is 28 prime years for a CB, leaving Real Madrid ON HIS OWN ACCORD not being forced out and choosing to do so NOW instead of a year's time for free like Alaba where he'd get more money than Utd. In fact word in Spain is he wanted to leave in 2019 but Zidane's rehiring convinced him to stay. It'll be an almighty and massive shock if he flops

No room whatsoever. Tottenham have entered the picture. Pay up or miss out.

Yeah there are definitely some echoes of it.

Personally I think he's a risky choice but I'm glad we're taking the risk. It could pay off handsomely and it shows ambition. We're in a position where we need to take risky choices to make that step up, like Liverpool breaking the bank for van Dijk before. Unlike Varane he was on an upward curve, but he was also unproven at that level.

If it doesn't work out, £50m for Varane isn't the end of the world. Maybe PSG would buy him a year later for a similar fee.

Don't worry too much. Cavani came here because no other big club were in for him. Although I accept that for every Cavani there is another Falcao
True! Although Cavani was always a bit different to the superstars, he was a warrior, a workhorse, and played with his heart on his sleeve. Varane's not that kind of player. It doesn't mean he won't work out wonderfully too, but he doesn't give the same signals, it requires a lot more guesswork or hope.

And it could be the total opposite to what you've just said. No one knows what's in his mind.

Oh yeah, definitely. He could be coming here because he wants a new challenge and he thinks United are onto good things. I've no idea what his motivations are. I'm just saying we can't assume he's coming here for that one positive reason, when there's plenty of other plausible explanations which fit the profile too.

We can hope he is. I'm hopeful.

I just think 50mill Euros has sounded too cheap from the start for this player, even with the one year left, others would surely be interested at that price.

For a marquee name, one that they don’t want to lose. I still think it will be agreed at 60 mill Euros but let’s see, maybe Murtough will work his magic.

For those oddly concerned about the price the quite accurate and reliable Transfermarkt values him currently at £63m.

We are rumoured to be getting him for €50m which equates to roughly £42.5m.

He's an instant upgrade on what we have even if he's lost a level. The price is more than fair and at 28 for a centre half he's arguably entering his peak.

Keep a clean shit tomorrow, United is my final bus
Forget how good or bad Varane is. Give me a better option than Varane for the reported money. We need someone experienced to come and partner Harry. So what would be your options ?
That's why I said the money isn't bad that we're paying and that the other options went elsewhere. He probably is our only option. Whether Kounde or Pau Torres will become the next big thing remains to be seen. Perhaps there's others too. Ruben Dias is the ideal sort of signing but whether there's another out there remains to be seen. Varane is a known quantity and is experienced, so I'm not exactly against it. I just don't think he's as good as other say.

I was sceptical about the likes of Lukaku, Sanchez, Schweinsteiger, Schneiderlin etc and had others kick off/laugh at my opinion when we signed them. Look what happened there. I'm just saying it how I see it.

Very few clubs have big money to throw around this Summer. I'd be surprised if we paid as much as £50m for him with a year left.

And sneijder and ozil and khadeira and Ronaldo
Sneijder had one good season (I think, off the top of my head) in an inferior league. He wasn't pulling up trees in Spain. Ozil never reached his Real or pre-Real levels. Khadeira was meh at Madrid and was still the same afterwards, I don't think they missed him at least. Ronaldo, ok he's been great but still a lesser player than he was at Real or even us.

Well he would improve the defence of almost every team in Europe no?

Clubs will raise eyebrows for a player like this if he’s really going for as low as 50 mill Euro

I mean Chelsea, Bayern, Spurs (lolz), Us, PSG… he’d play in those teams and is arguably an upgrade on Stones (based on Stones previous form.) I reckon it’s got 60 mill written all over it, which is creating the one horse race.

I could be wrong of course. I don’t care much as long as we get him. Massive signing.

It'll be boom here we go once we get the final biggest hurdle out of the way, agreeing a fee :nervous: hopefully it isn't a drawn out affair.

Chelsea, Bayern and us only really. If it's the case that he wants to come to us that would drive the price down.

Yeah it might be true that it’s as low as that, nothings confirmed though and I have a sneaky suspicion other teams have enquired and been shut down by the price we’re willing to go to.

Journo’s know feck all at this stage. Personal terms, maybe, but they don’t know the price until it’s agreed and settled.

Even if it‘s £49m I doubt it’s pure £49m. It can still be £40m but £9m adds on if we win PL or if he is in PFA Team of the season.

About? Best local fast food chain?
If he knows a good one, I’d be happy to hear about that, I’ve just had a shocker.

but he was one of the first reporting that this is about done for £50m along with trippier at 18m

It wouldn’t all be up front anyway. £50 million is a good deal for someone with that level of experience. Hopefully he can adapt to the PL. if he can we are buying a Rolls Royce
Agreed, one of the most complete ball playing defenders in the game, has everything you want from a solid defender too and adds the huge bonus of pace. I am still not getting too involved with this one as it seems too perfect of a transfer, but it does have vibes of the ADM saga before we signed him, there is far too much smoke for this to be a Ramos situation.

Is it true he is also a boyhood United fan?

With what appears no real rivals for his signature I think it would be over paying. I'd predict it goes through for less.

He's hated us ever since Roy Keane ended his father's career.

To be fair it's not like they see it on the team sheet that often.

Has there been any mention of a swap for Pogba? Not saying I'd want this, but seeing as they are both entering the final year of contracts, it seems a plausible option.
Not really as Zidane was the one pushing to sign Pogba at the time rather than Perez who it was reported wasn’t keen on him.

The only team that seems to be in for Pogba right now is PSG.
