This is a problem otherwise we wouldn’t have bought Varane. Let’s wake up. It’s not just about goals conceded. It’s about braking up play, your teammates having full trust in you, etc.
I think many will see the difference now with Varane. We finally have a center half next to Maguire who can hold his own.

Hold up. Silvestre better than Lindelof at CB?

Is my memory that poor or is it really Swede hunting season.

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time
He was solid today. Didn't have much to do though.

Silvestre had half a season where he was brilliant at CB, far better than Lindelof has ever been. I remember many (if not most) on here thought he'd been our best player for the first half of 03/04, and second only to Henry in the Premier League. Unfortunately Rio then got his 9 month ban and Silvestre fell apart without his usual partner, never to get near that level again.

Outside of that golden run I'd say Lindelof is probably slightly better than Silvestre was, but I'll always remember Silvestre well for that half a season of brilliance.

Congrats.

Lindelof is a decent option as third choice CB.

So where exactly do people sit on the Varane vs. Lindelof debate? It's getting really hard to tell.

mirror mirror on the wall, who's the whitest text of them all?
Must be hard to be 3rd choice CB. If the starters are fit and relatively young, they should play practically all important games.

Yep, very pleased for him to captain his country. Also very pleased he should now be a backup for us rather than first choice.

The new Captain Sweden
Perfect, even more pressure on him to get consistent game time so he can seek his minutes elsewhere and we can finally get rid of him.

On another note, only sums up lack of leadership in Swedish national team..

What's with all the moaning and desire to see him sold?

He's not that bad, his main issue is that he tends to be a bit of a softie, but it's something that can easily be improved and there's no reason he won't benefit from having someone like Varane in the squad.

It's a long season, we'll need options and hopefully we now have Victor as a backup instead of having to rely on Bailly

Good on him getting the captaincy. I still see him wanting out next summer prior to the world cup because surely he won't be a starter now.

Why would we get rid of him? He is the perfect level for a 3rd choice CB. Not so good he'd wanna go, not too poor to play the occasional game.

I would imagine he will want out after this season. Unless bad injuries or Ole goes with a back three.

The weird disdain some of you have for him is completely mystifying.

What has he done wrong? Other than not being the required quality for a starter in a team that aims to challenge for titles?

We need him in the squad, but maybe he wants out if he doesn't get the game time. CB position is the most difficult to give the third and fourth choice a good amount of game time. Midfield and attack, you can always throw in a sub at 65 min.
Agree he's a bit soft, but that's also my main concern with Varane. Varane has many good features, but like Lindelof, he is not really relying on physical strength in his defending.

I think you are right. He will leave for Spain (or France) if he don't get the minutes he needs.
It is quite ridicolous to not think he can leave. He is as competitive as the other pro and want to play in the prime of his career.
So be it. Tuanzebe will maybe take the chance.

Lindelof being soft has little to do with relying on physical strength in his defending, more to do with the fact that so many times he's positioned himself perfectly only to lose out because he applies a soft touch on the ball instead of putting his foot through it. Not sure what to call it, indecisive on the ball, hesitates to the point that the attackers get a second chance at winning the ball.

If Victor wants out next summer, then by all means,, but i see little reason for us to put him on the market when it's obvious that we need solid alternatives, which we haven't had for a long time.

Varane might need time to settle in, different league

Lindelöf and Pogba seem close off the pitch. You regularly see them talking together in training videos.
they have a running bet on how bad they can play before getting dropped. neither is backing down.

Congratulations to him on being made captain of the Swedish national team. Good to see a player from our club being chosen to represent his country this way.

I can't see why he would need to leave. We wore down players the last two seasons by not haven't suitable people to rotate. During SAF's last years we had Rio, Nemanja and Jonny Evans, with Phil Jones and Chris Smalling coming in 2010-11.

I would definitely prefer to see rotation of the 3 CBs this season and not play Varane and Maguire into the ground. Sensible management could get you 5 years out of that pairing but if we insist on starting them constantly I can see 1 or both of them breaking down in a couple of years from being overplayed. Lindelof is way ahead of the remaining backup options and it would be idiocy to sell him.

I like Lindelof but feck me, imagine being in the Sweden squad and having soft touch Lindelof lining up as your captain.

To counter that, CBs seem to be made Captains more often than other positions and whilst you might call him soft he is definitely one of the more vocal members of the team on the pitch which is significant in the Captain's role. In Sweden he seems to be very highly thought of and honestly his defensive style is typical of continental defenders, he would be mint in La Liga but his specific weaknesses are most exposed in the PL.

Barca might finally be his level ;)

Madness the lack of support as a United player Lindelof has in this thread. You might not think he's the greatest defender in the world, but at least try to want him to succeed as someone who represents the club.

Amazing achievement to be captaining his national team.

Yeah it would certainly be nice to utilize all 3 center backs and not expect/hope Maguire can play in every single game for the entire season again. The squad is finally getting to a place where we have backups that we should be able to rely on.

Such a stupid comment. Why would you see him sold when we are trying to increase the depth in quality? Or do you hope that Jones and Bailly will magically heal and stay fit for more than a couple of weeks?
