Not sure why we have 6 pages following a Guardian rumour mill written by Barry Glendenning, who doesn’t to even seem to like football.

Exactly. This thread should have been closed a while back, but until there's anything official, I guess this will keep going.

I honestly think i actually despise him for that, he just behaved like a total wimp and is easily one of the most embarrassing things i have seen a United player
That was after Martial had literally dragged us back into the game as well, and the entire rest of the team just showed absolutely no fight - this was the absolute epitomy of that (and it's also why I've got no time for people criticising Martial's attitude)

I might be underrating him a little bit but I don’t think he’s any better than McTominay or Fred.. so I’ll pass! Especially when seemingly there’s so many other better midfielders we could go for.

However if he gets the best out of De Gea again I’m all for it ;)

You chose a story you liked and went with it, not the slightest amount of evidence necessarry
Are you feeling OK? I made no comment either way. I simply saw someone using a Herrera quote saying he didn't do it for money, and found it curious because not many players come out and say they did it for money. Stop jumping to conclusions, you're not my girlfriend.

Even if that statement is correct which I would disagree with, the operative word is was. Herrera is about to turn 32 and has clearly lost a step since leaving, we have half a dozen better options in the current squad before we even get into the under 23s. It would be a total waste of time and money to bring him back because of how good he used to be.
Yes I agree that he's too old now as I said earlier in the thread. I never said I wanted him back.

A player that offers pretty much the same as McTominay, heart, stamina, attitude and thats about it. No thanks.

Its crazy that nobody wants him back including me but he is far better than Mctominay which says a lot about the state of our midfield. We need to do better as a club.

Footballers are known for often stating that they move for money.
Had we handed him an extension with about a year of his contract left, he would have accepted it probably. But we didn't, we gave him a late offer and that should tell you something, maybe he wasn't seen as an integral part of the team anymore and he wasn't exactly young. One of the reasons why I think we wouldn't even try to bring him back. His journey at United was simply finished.

I'm going to go against the flow on this one. He'd be cheap and a very low risk signing. He's got a lot more energy than Matic and he's better on the ball than van de Beek. Obviously he'd be second choice but he'd be an obvious sub for either of Fred or McTominay.
Edit: anything over 10m wouldnt be worth it obviously.

He is not an upgrade to our current midfielders, so why on earth should we get him back.

No he didnt, he had Pogba next to him most of the time and had to balance his lack of defending out
McTominay with Pogba next to him, is different from Herrera with Carrick/Blind behind him. McTominay is absolutely there to protect the house so the speak.

McTominay is seldom ever the deepest CM, even when he happens to play with Pogba in midfield it's McTominay who is allowed to play advanced. He is poor positionally and Solskjaer knows this. McTominay is a pure 8, hardly ever plays 6.
You may think that McTominay is better suited to being an 8 than a 6, but that doesn't change the fact that he plays much more reserved for us than Herrera did when he scored his goals.

LVG almost always plays with 1 holding MF, 1 box-to-box, 1 no 10. Under LVG, Herrera was always an 8. With Carrick or Blind behind him.
Herrera had 8 goals, 5 assists in his first season. 5G 5A in his 2nd season and when he started player deeper he wasn't scoring as often, because he wasn't at the edge of the box or in the box as often. Some assists in his 3rd and then his goal contributions dropped off.

McTominay is very careful with choosing his moments to go forward. Remember the EL final or the extra time shot against West Ham? He doesn't get in those positions often from open play. McTominay is a worse passer than Herrera, that's why he has less assists, but the difference in goals is a result of different tactics.

Blind barely got a game in midfield. He spent most of his time at CB and LB. Pogba and Ander was the first Pogba season, and Pogba, Ander and Matic in a 3 was his last season which were Ander's best seasons.

I explained Herrera's goals contributions came mostly in his first 2 seasons (under LVG). He had Carrick behind him (Blind was Carrick's stand in early on). Herrera did not score shit under Mourinho.

Now why would Herrera's goals take a nosedive if not for a change of tactics? You even said you thought he was better under Mourinho, so it can't be down to form according to you. Herrera also played in the pivot plenty under Mourinho (when we had Mkihi) and OGS.

Check the heatmaps. He had more touches in the final 3rd earlier on under LVG.

Might as well call Donny a flop and send him back to Ajax for 20m and/or write off Matic.
I would love for them to step up and show that they can play in our midfield coming season. But that feels like a gamble imo.

I like him as a player and we should never have got rid, however, his time has passed now. We don't really need a player of his type in the squad unless he's willing to accept very low wages and perhaps takes the place of Matic as the senior midfielder. I do think he was underrated by many fans during his time here because he played under our worst managers. Under Ole in this current team, prime Herrera would have been exceptional.

Hated it when Mourinho changed his game from tidy two touch midfielder to a play acting hatchet man.

Just found his behaviour on the field a real cringe at times, I also thought he was as average as they come as well.

I loved his passion, he clearly has a soft spot for United but he's just not the quality we need right now (or then, to be honest). I hope he gets a good move and he might make a good coach in the future (again, not for us)
