It's not just the financial doping that makes me question it. It's the fact that he has literally never worked with anything less than the strongest, most expensive and most star-studded squad in whatever country he's in. I can't think of any other manager who has had the best squad in the league for 100% of their career, and still he hasn't really impressed that much ever since he left peak Messi+Iniesta behind. He simply delivers precisely what you'd expect of the players at his disposal, no more. You can't be called the best ever if you've literally never had to work against the odds and make your team better than the sum of its parts. If he'd go to a club like Spurs or Napoli and take them to the top, I'd doff my hat. Until then, he's just a competent manager who refuses to take on a real challenge.

Spurs missing their best player too because City have turned his head and are trying to break the British transfer record for the 2nd time in a month to buy him.
Especially when he talked about 'youth' and bringing players from the academy.
Sky deserve to be pulled up for normalising this big spending/chequebook madness in the PL.
The media when dealing City most of the time is very confusing and are clearly being told not to bring the discussion into their ownership up what so ever.
When you see the reaction over Chalobah’s goal at the weekend, you can see how much more it means. It gives the club heart and soul and even Chelsea can manage it.
City just keep Foden around as their trinket and have no intention of promoting anyone else or giving a young player a chance.
They have no soul, as artificial as it comes, and if they spend on Kane now, it just makes it all more meaningless than it already was.

And they value Foden so much they went out and spend £100m on someone to play in the same positions he does.
The great thing about the media though is they are like a pack of hyenas once things turn, Pep broke from Barca pressure/politics and if the media start getting reactions out of him, their allegiances will go out the window in the hunt for drama. Gary Neville is right, he’s been left horribly short by these stingey owners. 700m starting 11 & 300m bench isn’t enough. What do you expect the worlds best coach to do? He had to play 60m Riyad Mahrez instead of Gazza 2.0. De Bruyne wasn’t fit so he had to play 100m Grealish & World Cup winner Gundogan. They clearly need a left back, 52m Benjamin Mandy isn’t good enough. Don’t get me started on the rest of the defence. 60m Laporte & 40m Ake are nowhere near good enough to be 3rd & 4th choice for the mighty Manchester City. Poor Pep has got the best he can out of limited resources. Give the man a break & get the chequebook out.
It's a sign of poor recruitment ability when you have players like Danny Ings going for £30m and you instead hold out for Harry Kane for £150m.
Kane is a better overall player but Ings can finish and has decent all round play, he'd suit that City side very well especially since they have no proper striker now that Aguero's left.
SAF would sign the likes of Vidic and Evra for cheap too, but every decent Pep signing has to be £50m+. It's funny though that despite all the money spent, the best players Pep has and had previously were the ones signed before him - the likes of KDB, Fernandinho and Sterling, and Kompany, Aguero, David Silva before them.

True. I was amazed when he made that claim about 60 million academy players. It was like something from the Onion.

That's the weird thing. Gundogan and Foden are good but Foden wasn't a signing and Gundogan took a while. Its strange how few of the signings made under him became key players.

I honestly think they would be taking a huge risk if they fail to get Kane. You simply can’t survive a whole season without a decent striker.

These clubs have massive scouting networks. Surely somewhere in all of European football there is a player of some sort who is a decent striker. Does it really have to be Kane or nothing?
They've not had a proper striker for years now and they've still been very successful.
The astonishing money they've spent and the absurd depth they've got with their squad mean they are still going to be right up there.
For me the difference is without Kane City are still favourites for the title but you never know, where as if they get Kane they'll storm to the title easily.

It’s greed. He didn’t need Grealish. He could have taken a young prospect there and plumped the money on Kane earlier in the window if he really wanted the finished article.

I realise they're not amongst the best players in the world in their position but surely you can manage with 1 solid professional in the first 11 (or 2 i guess with Zinchenko but frankly he looks pretty good).
