If you could change the outcome, or one specific moment, from a single match what would it be?

I cant remember exactly the games rooney missed but we would have beaten that inter side. They wouldn't have been able to deal with our pace and power. Fergie got the better of Jose the year before too.
Where is your crystal ball? If you ask Inter fans they'll say their treble winning side are obvious favourites in the final and I'd bet most neutrals would agree.

"We beat them last year therefore we will definitely beat them this year" is some solid logic. That's even ignoring that it was a very different Inter team and United team.

Rooney never regained form after his injury, so he'd likely have been out of sorts in the semis and final just as he was to end the season and at the world cup.

As a Bayern supporter: Drogba‘s header to send the CL into extra time.
To this day the moment in football that annoys me by far the most.

While I understand the annoyance with that 2004 Porto goal, I find it weird that people are so certain we'd have won the CL had we beaten Porto. We weren't very good in those two games, terrible at times, had clear weaknesses during the second half of that season (Rio's suspension and all) and while other big teams were also out early that year, there were good sides left, even if less fashionable.

We could easily have beaten Porto and not won it.

Has to be Nani's red card, you could feel that year that Sir Alex was throwing the gauntlet down for one more CL and we were quietly making easy work of that Madrid side until the inevitable happened!

Close second, Evra hitting the crossbar against Everton which would have put the game to bed at 5-2!

The Aguero moment likely never would’ve happened if Evra (I think) had scored to make it 5-2 against Everton.

Our collapse happened in that game, we lost the title when we drew 4-4.
This. League is over if we win that game.

Not one of you would have changed something in the England - Italy game ? :)
I'd change Italy's winning margin.

For me I'd change the outcome of the Dortmund tie in 97, that Juve team were perenial bottlers in the CL. Would have beaten them easily.

Bayern must be the only team to be within minutes of winning it twice only to end up losing.

  1. The Everton 4-4 result in the 11/12 season. That hurt. More so because that big tree scored.
  2. The Nani red card. Still to this day I hurl abuse at that ref whenever I see him on TV. We deserved the win.
  3. England vs Italy Euro final. Was very confident going into this for some reason, and to lose on penalties made it even worse

Evra hitting the woodwork in the 4-4 against Everton in 2011/12. He scores that we've got 5 and the title is ours.

Close behind: the Scholes offside. The Rafael red card against Bayern. Nani red card against Madrid.

Also, now that I think of it, the referee failing to apply the rules in the build up to Chelsea's goal against us in 2009/10. Never should have stood. Blatant foul.

Also (I must've edited this post like ten times already) F***KING West Ham heroics on the last day of the season in 1995. Any one of the God knows how many Ludek Miklosko saves. Just let the ball F'N GO IN!

Also, Roy Keane getting injured in 1997-98 against Leeds when we were running away with the title.

I need to leave this thread cos I'm going to start talking about Dortmund, Monaco and Leverkussen next.
I dont know which one to choose. I remember us killing it against Bayern till that red card, maybe that. Sigh.

I know everyone’s saying that winning the Everton game would have made Aguero’s winner redundant but to go back in time and change history to “Agueroooooooooh he’s missed it!” Would have been much more exciting and satisfying. Plus it would absolutely break the hearts of millions of berties. I’d like his shot to have hit the inside of both posts before somehow ending up in the keeper’s hands please.

quite possible! but the team won it the next year both times which speaks volume about the moral both sides had.

But that Drogba header… Man, I am still pissed.

With the way QPR were playing I'm certain that goalkeeper would have punched it in diving for it

For the sheer spectacle that would follow, I'd probably pick the Leverkusen game in the 2nd leg in 2002.

Playing against Real Madrid in Glasgow with SAF at the helm for the CL final would have been special. It still hurts that we didn't make that final.

4. Our loss against Villarreal in the EL final. I don't really give a feck about that trophy, but I'm tired of the old "but Ole hasn't won anything" argument. It would be nice to get that annoying distraction out of the way so that we could focus on the primary objective.
Honestly don't give a shit about this one. The whole of the final I was just sort of watching it as if it was a game against Burnley, no actual passion or desire for us to win the EL.

I don't think I would've been very happy even if we had won. Just job done and move on.

I think Tarnat getting a proper hit on the clearance after that corner kick in Nou camp May 1999

Still can't decide which was more painful 99 or Dohoam 2012

What happened 1999 was just so grotesquely unimaginable to me. It left me more confused than angry. 2012 hurt quite differently.

My vote is on 2012 by a country mile. The following year made up for a lot of the damage but that moment was filled with pure apathy for me.
Interesting how Bayern has multiple "exact moment in an exact game" situations that would turn into a CL win, whereas others are like "If we just won the entire semi final leg, we might have had a chance in the final".

There's a club that got a nickname out of that! And the second time happened against their biggest rival, too

And we will never ever forget it :drool::drool:

Exactly what i was thinking!

Others going on about „that red was undeserved“ or how they might have won that quarterfinal and Bayern fans will be like „hold my beer!“.

I'd hope we beat City in that match we played them( we lost to the Kompany header) so we'd get another title or have us beat Barca in one of the CL finals.
I will choose the 2009 final against Barca. Maybe, SAF would have convinced Ronaldo to stay longer after that !

Nani’s red card for me.

Was Ferguson’s last chance to win the CL (though we didn’t know that then).

And for those of you who remember the tie, we absolutely had Madrid on the ropes. And we would definitely been favourites to win the CL had we progressed.

To top it off, the red card was so grotesquely unfair. Just left me absolutely livid. Still get angry thinking about it.

That spell of CL defeats in the few years before 99, I honestly thought Id never see us win it in my life.
Portsmouth, FA Cup, 2008.

I'd eradicate the club's existence if possible
This, to not only have been the only side to have won the treble, but done it twice........

If it's a moment then I'd say the Scholes incorrect offside call vs Porto.

If it's a whole game then the 2009 CL Final. At least we were one of the best teams in the world at that time. 2011 we had no right to be there.

The thing is with that Aguero goal, if my fantasy did come true and he missed or QPR just didn't give him the chance, we would have won the title, and perhaps Fergie would have gone "you know what, I think I'm done". There'll be no need for him to go again and avenge that moment, so therefore Moyes probably wouldn't be put in charge. I think Pep left Barca at the end of that season as well...

Things could have been very different

As it’s been mentioned a few times, here’s the video. I think people forget just how annoying a 60 seconds it was:

Kind of agree with this, it would have been very funny. Doubt that there were millions of City fans at that stage, mind…

Pretty sure every one of Everton's goals was on Jonny Evans that day.

For some reason the 4-4 vs. Everton at home in the 2011/12 season came to mind first. We led both 3-1 and 4-2 in the second half, and would have won the league if we have seen off the game, but instead we completely bottled it. Eventually City beat us at the Etihad and won their first league title.
