Will be disappointed if he moves to City.
how come? Dont understand why our fans are pining over him. Shall we see if scholes and rooney are up for putting their boots on again and ask wild bill hicock if he’d like to take over as head of security after last seasons liverpool protest?

I wouldn't want Ronaldo back.

He would just stink up the place.
We have a new portugese God in our team.

Also, Greenwood already has a tutor in the form of a certain urugaian God.

Feck him, let him stink up the other side of town.

Everyone gets their heart broken for the first time. Those that don’t care have just seen it all before.

I’m not too bothered personally, I just think it’s a huge shame. Having an affinity with fans is a great thing, United have an illustrious list of players who we still revere, going back over half a decade now. Ronaldo just ensured he won’t have that longevity with us, and it’s quite sad to throw that away at the end of your career and he could have been a player our fans still talked about in 50 years time. But he clearly doesn’t care so neither should we.

*Assuming this is actually happening, which is seemingly very possible now.
Yeh that’s exactly right. Very disappointing if true!

He’s a fecking snake if this happens.
Why? Because he’s making a career move that pays well and has a good chance of bringing some more trophies?

Why do people expect players to be fans of their club and show a streak of loyalty that would potentially hold their career back. Ronaldo is great in the sense that his competitive fire still burns. Pep, City and their wages will suit him to a tee.

For those of you saying he is only doing it for the money, I really do not think that's the case with Ronaldo.

If he ends up at City (which he won't because I refuse to accept it and I am in denial), it's because it's the team that can provide him with the best chance of winning more trophies.

He will want to go down as the greatest ever and he wants to win as many major trophies as possible before he retires.

I don't think the club in which he plays for matters to him as much as we would like to think, as long as he can bring home the silverware he's happy.

His determination to win is unparalleled, which is one of the key reasons he is one of the best.

He might fare worse in the polls, but if he can add at another PL and CL to his name, I doubt he cares much.
Yeh perhaps but he’s won everything anyway, does he really need to add a couple trophies at some tinpot club. He’d be better going to PSG!

Would he be the first City player to win the Balon d’Or with City? Winning the Champions League pretty much guarantees that trophy, and his profile is much higher than anyone’s else at City.

Are people in this thread doing that weird thing were they act like Ronaldo is not a United legend?

Catalyst and star player during our most dominant period. Won ballon d’or here. Won more than Cantona here. Arguably the best player to line up for the club. Come on

Again though I can think of better ways of ensuring that than pissing off the biggest fan base in the world!

Kind of funny, I'm not that phased by this, really. I'll be a little miffed City are signing a goalscoring freak which is mostly what they're side is missing, but no personal feelings to this one. Growing up I was always much more of a Wazza fanboy than I ever was Ronaldo, and I was very indifferent to him whilst he was at Madrid. If anything, his rabid fanbase from those on here made me like him even less than I ever did.

Ronaldo is bigger than Man Utd in world sports. I dont wanna admit it, but its true.

I've never liked him much and always preferred Messi. If he goes to City, feck him.

At the end of the day, nobody can grudge him for this, because he is doing what's best for his career. I think he hardly cares what some Utd fans think, his legacy in football will not change one bit. Infact it will better if he wins stuff here, while Messi went to farmer's league.

United board should do everything to not let that happen. They want a striker, give them Cavani.

Didn’t Cantona win more PL’s than him? I think it’s pretty even. 1 less CL and 1 more PL

At this stage of his career, de Bruyne is probably the better player and he'd be in for a rude awakening when he walks into a club and figures that he isn't the center of adoration.

Whilst Ronaldo will certainly be conscious of the aftermath of a move to City, I really doubt it's his biggest concern.

If you put yourself in his shoes for a second - you desperately want to leave Juve and go to a club which gives you the best chance of winning trophies.

What options does he have? PSG are not interested, and we've heard nothing about him being linked to Chelsea. Barca + Real can't afford him, and Bayern certainly won't break their wage structure for him.

It only really leaves City as a viable option from a footballing perspective.

Now moving to our local rivals to help them win the league and CL. No way should he be considered a United legend after this. This will destroy his United legacy.

Wouldn't be surprised if he made the move to City happen.

My impression has always been that his admiration for SAF dwarfs his affection for United by a great amount.

Football is about emotion. Strip that out and at its core it’s a pretty crappy game with a sack of air being kicked about. The reason I absolutely love it is about that emotion, the love for Utd and the love that is returned by the players. Its not true at all that it’s all the exception, there are hundreds of Utd players who have been and gone without shitting all over the fans and their legacy. People came to this club knowing nothing and then left as fans, see Rio, Evra, Vidic etc. They grew their affection while at the club just as the players grow in the hearts of the fans.

I will say, I would only have this reaction to one player and that’s Ronaldo. He’s just been a massive influential figure on my life. I’ve watched hundreds of hours of footage over and over again from him in a Utd shift and as I say it’s different when you idolise someone while growing up. You can claim it’s silly to respect his character but ultimately he’s been a model professional who has worked exceedingly hard to get to where he is. That’s admirable in any profession. I can tell though that he’s always been a person whos rubbed you up the wrong way so I’d say honestly you probably don’t really get it.
Players who spent their peak years here might have genuine affection for the club, yeah. It was the prime of their life. But for Ronaldo, we were only ever a stepping stone. He never really hid it either: as I said, he wanted out as soon as possible once he became a star.

He worked really hard to get where he is and that is admirable, I agree. And yes, he did rub me up the wrong way but it's more than that: I was never the type to idolise anyone, really. Not sure why, it's just not how I'm wired and always find it hard to relate to others idolising someone they never even spoke to. I loved how good he was for my favourite team but that's about it. It's not just Ronaldo, it's the same for other United players. I'm much more fond of Rio Ferdinand or Evra, for example, but it still falls well short of idolising them and if they had joined City, I'd have been disappointed but it wouldn't have hurt because it isn't personal.

Denis Irwin is more of a United Great than Ronaldo will ever be. Ronaldo doesn't care about United. Ronaldo cares only about Ronaldo. I genuinely couldn't care less if he goes to City

If true it’s a bitter pill to swallow, But, if it removes City from the Haaland chase next summer then it could be a very dark cloud with a huge silver lining.
Bold of you to assume Pep wont ask for him because he needs 5 world class options for each position.

Let's calm down for a second here and think logically. Do you think Pep announced he's leaving because of the signing of Ronaldo ?
I don't really see Ronaldo as a Pep player and not sure it will work out for him there. Not sure Pep would want him either due to the history between the pair. Seems like it's more of a state PR signing since PSG have Messi more than a pep wanted signing. I can see it going tits up for city tbh.

Get over it. He doesn't care about clubs. He cares about legacy.

he did what he did with us. We won trophies. He moved on. We should have too. There's so many years people teased a transfer back. It's like someone who can't get over their ex. Now they're mad that the ex moved on to a better person (club). We can't compare to city rn. We should focus on ourselves.

it's clear he made the right choice. Had he stayed with us, he wouldnt have won anything near what he did with Real Madrid. He moved on to better things, and rightfully so. It's a shame our club didn't improve after he left. We are the ex-girlfriends/boyfriends that never moved on and never bettered themself. Well, a decade later, and we're getting their now.

Obviously the agents work for the players, but usually the reports will say “Ronaldo interested in a move to City”, this time it’s all about Mendes, the way it’s being reported is so odd.

I don't think he really cares about anyone but himself. I had hoped he at least would not go to our league rivals out of respect for the fans, but it seems not to be the case.

That's not relevant for most people who don't consider Ronaldo a "United legend".

It's all about how you define a "United legend" in the first place. It goes well beyond how good he was.

ETA Cantona, for one thing, is a United fan. And to make an obvious point: there's no way in hell that he would've ever considered moving to City for whatever reason.

Quite honestly, is the rivalry even that much of a thing between the players these days? Greenwood and Foden are roommates with England and by all accounts they tag team the groupies. The Latin players spend their holidays together in the city. Aguero is visiting de Gea's home and being kind of a Godfather to his child. The rivalry is only good for Sky to sell their product.
