its a natural movement. The ball hits his thigh and bounces up. Its a split second thing.
It’s not natural because it wasn’t swinging before the ball came up. He literally swung at the ball!

Chelsea were much better in that 15-20 minute period where they had some nice counter attacks, but Liverpool obviously a big favorite to win it now. Missed the James incident so don't know what to make of it just yet.

Btw, I wouldn't want Lukaku anywhere near the United team based on this first half

There’s a follow through by his arm though. It wasn’t a reactionary thing, he was purposely keeping the ball out with his arm. He definitely knew what he was doing which is why he’s off.

Every game someone makes a braindead decision against liverpool to hand them the edge.

Incredibly frustrating. Just hope Chelsea don't shit the bed in the second half.

It was going over the line until he moved his arm forward. It’d be ridiculous if that wasn’t a penalty and a red
Didn't see any movement towards the ball. It also came off his foot/torso first?
Also Taylor seemed determent to do this he didn't even look at the sequence.

Disgraceful decision. No sane person can see that as a deliberate hand ball. Liverpool handed a win here.
He LITERALLY swipes his hand to the ball.

When half the Caf and the ref are in agreement that it’s a red in favor of Liverpool you can very safely assume that it’s 100% the correct decision. He deliberately not only denies a goal scoring opportunity but literally a goal. Stupid reflex but a clear red all day every day.

He hardly even checked the monitor properly to make an informed decision.

"How do you defend against Lukaku? Nudge him? Research him? Team up with a midfielder? We asked defenders how" - The Athletic

The answer actually is "play for a top six club".

Very entertaining game. Thought the red was harsh but it's one of those letter of the law scenarios, so Chelsea players need to accept it. The half time came at the right time for Chelsea, they need to cool their heads and take off an attacker and restore the five man defense. Liverpool will push for it and be susceptible on the counter.

None of these highlight videos are showing up for me. Just blank white squares.

if he is giving the pen, he has to get a red, because he denied a goal.
Hand is in a natural position. As a defender its not a free kick, if it was an attacker it would be because it generated an advantage.

I expect people to use the 1/3 speed slowed down video oh his hand movement to justify whatever take they have though.

It was a red card, he moves his arm to scoop the ball out
There was litereally a melee. Everything happend in 2 sq feet of space. Players can do nothing about it if the ball is shot and hit a part of the body. I can understand the pen but red is so baffling. There has to be some benefit of doubt otherwise such decisions decide the outcome of the match.

Surely if he gives the penalty he has to give the red as it denies a clear goalscoring opportunity?

It’s handball, just watch how brushes his arm towards the ball after it spun off him. Any fan would be mad in here if that wasn’t given for their team. Red card I don’t like but can’t blame the ref if that’s the rule.

Thought the red and pen were both correct decisions personally.

Reece James is a pretty good keeper. Don't think Chelsea can have many complaints at that. Liverpool should have at least two bookings, though. Too bad, since this game has been pretty entertaining. Chelsea are in for a long 2nd half.

Feet up at home.
Scoop makes it sound more than what it was. He pushed his arm slightly out and it was clearly from panic instinct than trying to actively cheat. There's a difference and the referee was pretty daft to assume a player trying to knee the ball away at first, where the ball rolled up toward his arm, was somehow trying to simulate foul play.

It's a pen because of the panic swing but to give a player a red for such a situation ruins the game. It was extremely harsh, yellow at best.
That's the way I saw it - the movement of the arm seemed to come after the ball had hit it, a pen is fair enough for me as it stopped a goal but the red was too much for me.

Let's hope it stays a draw though.

Awful defending/goalkeeping there from Chelsea. All it took was a shout from the goalie there and that's that.

Whats the story with the red card rule nowadays? Remember that Southampton defender getting sent off last year and thought it was harsh, all because he tried to avoid contact with Tony?

I don't know what you guys are watching. Some are even saying it wasn't a foul.
It deflects off his thingh but the ball was still going in. He moves his arm towards the ball to ensure he blocks it. Entirely deliberate.
Its a pen and a red card all day long.
No way he can react that fast with his arms. Clear pen, but never a red.

It's from point blank and it deflects via his thigh. How much is delibrate and how much is just an instant reaction. It's by all means a penalty, but some fecking leeway is needed, getting a red seems pretty fecking harsh

Rewatch it you’ll see he moved it forward, and the ball was going in otherwise. Just watch how far his hand moves. The ref didn’t even need to look at it in fairness. The VAR team told him, he just wanted confirmation.

As much as I want to complain about Liverpool being spawny with decisions, the ref got it completely right imo.

Why did Alonso head the ball out of Mendy hand?
What was he thinking?

That swing of James hand caused that decision

Chelsea were the better team before that. We weren’t terrible but tactically Chelsea were much better.

Full PEN incident:

I change my mind. Can see how that's a red. The ball rebounds onto his arm, then he swings his arm out (knowingly or unknowingly)

And Mendy was all over the place there.

Chelsea should have put Liverpool away by now. Anyway, not complaining with a 1-1 draw.

I really don´t get that decision. I thought according to the rule change last year it isn´t a penalty when the ball deflects from another part of the body onto the arm.

The referee basically handed Liverpool the win here, what a shame.
This. I don‘t understand all the posters here saying it was a clear penalty/red.
Rules are clear for this kimd of situations and this wasn‘t a penalty. VAR showed Taylor only a picture of the ball touching James hand and Taylor didn‘t even bother to look at the video to see that the ball came from his knee.. disgraceful use of VAR by Taylor

He stands on the line and the ball goes in if he doesn't use his hand. That has always been a red card, no idea why people think it's harsh.

Sucks for Chelsea because it's a massive swing of momentum and he'd been better off letting it go in and continue with 11 on the pitch but that's just reflexes in the heat of the moment. But no doubt it's a red.

tell me the rules. It’s a red as far as I can tell. Harsh but that’s the rules. It’s an obvious penalty.
What the hell can he do about a ball bouncing off his knee onto his arm in a split second?

Looked like he moved his arm to help block the ball after it hit his knee?
Happened in fraction of second. No brain can process the scenario and instruct arm to move in such agility. I mean he is not Flash.
