I really don't understand what he does. His best skill appears to be hiding from the ball, which somehow insulates him from the relentless flak copped by his midfield partner, whilst he's comparatively placed on some lofty pedestal by our fans. Absolute nothing player.

Every now and again he will have a storming game but are they worth the wait? His hiding from the ball today was infuriating and it happens too often. Fred is getting shit on but he at least shows for the ball.

I will never understand the insistence to keep playing him as a regular. All this time watching him, I'm still unsure what particular thing he does well. For all the Fred hate, at least we know that Fred's work rate is extremely high and he tracks the ball in midfield. What does McTominay do?

Mister invisible. I don't wanna criticise him too much because most of our team played like crap, but how is it possible that he gets so few touches of the ball other than he often hides?

Once a new manager comes in he’ll end up in one of teams fighting for relegation.

Outclassed today, literally went to hiding.

Can understand why people in this forum want us to pay top dollar for Declan Rice.

Just 33 touches today, and 19 passes completed (23 attempted) in 82 mins. Ronaldo, who was a ghost had more touches and more passes completion as well as attempted passes.

Criminal performance from a PL midfielder, nevermind a Man Utd midfielder. Tells the sorry state of our team, when a player like him is so important to our XI.
I looked at the stats earlier and saw the same.

I don't think it's OTT to suggest that might have been one of the worst performances from a United midfielder ever.

let’s be honest he’s clearly not fit and been rushed back from his injury.

why isn’t the coaches going with DVB or Matic until he’s fit? play pogba midfield and put sancho wide ffs
Stranger thing is if McTominay had started, why this management couldn't see that he had been completely played off the park, and subbed him out sooner? And I don't mean after half an hour or at half time. At hour mark, so he might try to i prove from the first half performance. Fair?

It's weird that these guys can't see thing that so obvious to majority of the commoners.

McTominay against Leicester last season still takes the cake for me. That truly was the worst performance I've ever seen from one of our midfielders. Similar invisible performance (attempted 24 passes over the full 90 minutes) but he was even worse when he got on the ball.

This match wasn't much better though.

The Leicester game was direct after he suffered the groin injury against Leeds and yesterday he didn’t look fit at all. Not excusing his performance - he was so poor. But just adding a little context to it. He looked gassed after the first minute yesterday - never made a sprint the whole game.

So yesterday he didn’t look fit (according to some), but he looked fit last week and he got rested in midweek too.

And he was out for less than 2 weeks as well. He had his operation on the 25th of August and he restarted training on the 6th of Sep (pics of him training at Carrington) with his return game on the 19th. How does a 24yo athlete lose fitness in under two weeks and that still persists with him almost 3 weeks later?

So much straw clutching it’s unreal. You can’t blame every bad performance on poor fitness.

He should be this team's Fellaini/Phil Neville, the unconventional and less gifted player who does a job when needed. Instead he's a starting CM which is a bit laughable really.

It's fashionable to complain about Fred but Scott is a much bigger problem. We simply can't have a midfielder that gets on the ball so infrequently.

Yesterday was even worse than normal. He had almost half the touches and passes Fred did, at times you forgot he was even playing.

So much this. McTominay is a great squad player to have on the bench, but he's getting far too many minutes as a starter.

That is a fair point. Him hiding from the ball and making it difficult for our players to find him is an issue that is prevalent in 90% of the games he plays, but the absolute worst examples of it have come after injuries.

I’m not straw clutching. Conscious of the fact he played at West Ham and had double the amount of touches than he did against Villa. Just thought he looked particularly slow and short of sharpness on Saturday.

Everything I read suggested a minor groin injury is 4 weeks out and a worse diagnosis is 8 weeks. So he’s back way before schedule.

With that being said - I agree with you - no excuse for being so anonymous even if you aren’t fully up-to-speed - which is conjecture.

One of those players that's only getting game time because he's an academy lad, anybody with eyes and half a brain could see he's a bang average player from day one. Just usual RedCafe hyping up of players who play god awful for 10 games then play 1 good game and maybe get 1 goal and they get crowned with a dumb nickname like "McSauce" or "Messi Lingod" or something

He only attempted 23 passes, completing 19 passes in 80 minutes

When people say he hides from the ball, it's not a joke.

Scotty clearly isn’t fit. A solid squad man, but he’s not doing anyone a favor by being eager to get on the pitch.

Thought he was alright in the second half, played some nice passes and got on the ball more. In the first half we may as well not have played a midfield.

Done no favours by his partner. Ask of him was lessened considerably when Matic came on.

He was dreadful. Actually no, to be dreadful he needed to actually do something. I'd love to know how many touches he had in that first half.

I'm not sure if he is to blame for the first half, was left pretty much alone in midfield. In the second half he was OK to good.

Thought that was a much improved display compared to the last match where he was dreadful

‘But he works hard’.

The lad is the pits. Which is hilarious, really, as he is still a necessity in the vacuum that is our midfield. He’s atrocious defensively.

Should have been hooked after 45. He's as bad as Fred.

But passion and energy and all that.
And have us play a 4-0-6 formation? But yeah I think his positioning ability is way off and that plays a big part in us being vulnerable and him not getting on the ball. But when he has the ball, which he did a few times in the last 15 or so, his passing is pretty decent and incisive, as is his runs forward. I don't think he's cut out to play DM, despite looking like one. Like Fred, he's being made to play a role he just doesn't have the ability to.

Bypassed by both teams, summed up the team in general, not good enough on or off the ball.
