Because they felt Ole had a better chance of regaining the momentum that got us 2nd place last season compared to Fletcher creating it from nowhere with no prior managerial experience.

In an ideal world, United would have underperformed and sleepwalked to 4th place under Ole, before appointing a fully vetted long term target like ETH in the summer.

Appointing Fletcher and then replacing him with another caretaker for 6 month is a much bigger set of unknowns and therefore a significant risk in its own right. So it's understandable that the board would want to avoid this option if possible.
Of course I get if the only option was Fletcher as caretaker, but that's clearly not the only option. The issue is they probably only have one idea of what should happen and cant make a decision based off a new scenario, that doesn't fit their plan.

It was blatantly obvious things could get much worse after the Liverpool game and have done. Now they're sacking a manager after handing over 6 points with 2 days until our next fixture (which is pivotal for the season) - just after an international break, which was a perfect opportunity to do it. I'd love to say "hindsight is 20/20 here", but I think for even the most ardent of Ole supporters, the Liverpool game showed how far away we were from being a side that can challenge and Oles not the man to get us there.

That seems reasonable. I imagine you want some of the basics fixed first before looking ahead to what could be on offer at the end of the season. It's early enough in the season for it not to be a write off.
That’s it. When Klopp joined Liverpool there results where still hit and miss but you could see what he was trying to do. Then over a few windows he brought in better players. We have a much better side than that Liverpool team so if we get a manager that can bring a plan we be in a good place.
The reason I compared to Chelsea as when Lampard was sacked you were 9th but your squad was much better than that so it was a quick turnaround

Once he’s let’s go, I hope we can go back to collectively adoring Ole the former player again. He steadied the ship at least but the job was too big for him, no shame in that where many men have failed before him. I love Ole the player and hope he gets the chance to succeed elsewhere as a manager.

I'd hope so too but judging from the number who only remember SAF from his final years I'd assume a number, especially younger fans will only have memories of Ole the manager

This.

Ole has had to underperform to a horrific extent for this to happen. No one expected it to be this bad.

Thanks for steadying the ship Ole. Should have gone after the team hasn't progressed last season and failed to win the europa league.

And once we brought in Varane and Ronaldo, the expectation was higher than ever.Sadly, he didn't deliver.

What's the expectation for the rest of the season then, if you get a new manager in? Say for arguments sake, it's Zidane or Rodgers.
To play like Manchester United, to get performances worthy of the cost from DvB and Sancho. To find a way to allow Greenwood to continue developing. To fix a defence that always looks two minutes away from chaos. To have genuine competition for places in the side where underperforming players are dropped. To find an answer to our midfield woes.

Do these things and results and trophies will take care of themselves.

I hope the next manager can build off of this team or we just threw away the last 4 years for nothing, not even a single trophy.

If only Varane was available in a few months we would be celebrating CL and Premier League winners with Ole in charge!

That would be based on the qualities and performance of the next manager. We did throw away 3-4 years for nothing, that's given and a fact.

We know they were hoping Ole would turn it around and that's why they didn't act sooner, the question is why did they feel that when the average fan on the street recognised Ole could not turn this around?

The players were leaking to the press about the unrest in the dressing room and how they had no faith in him. We were in relegation form. The performances were Sunday league level every game for months. It was unprecedented what a mess we were in, I've never seen a manager lose a dressing room so publicly. There was no hope, there was no chance. Everyone on here was saying they are delaying the inevitable, and the people in charge of a multi billion pound business didn't have the common sense to recognise this.

Appointing an interim is no risk when the alternative is a certain midtable finish. What is the risk, the interim does a bad job just like Ole? How is that a risk? You have to give yourself a chance of turning things around. If it doesn't work out, at least you tried.

While this is obviously hyperbole I do think Varane would have saved us some points and potentially kept Ole in a job longer, so perhaps his injury problems have been a blessing in disguise.

i also think it was a waste but am also trying to accommodate the rationale that kept him here for so long. It's going to be very symbolic when the first casualty of the next regime is Maguire. Clueless purchase by a manager who had no idea what strategy he was buying for. Same as AWB. Making a new signing the captain before he even had the chance to earn the respect of the dressing room was worse than videogame management.

This leaving us in a better place myth needs to die. 400 million spent and that didn't grow on trees. Jose's squad and 400m to spend > This squad. Any day of the week and twice on Sundays. Same dire atmosphere around the club and we actually probably look even more stupid.

Lets see how our signings get on with a new Manager and hopefully coaching staff. That's only when we can truly assess the last few years of rebuilding. It could well turn out that players like Maguire/AWB were stinkers, alternatively with proper structure and an experienced coaching team they could turn it around and become top quality players. It's a wait and see brief as far as I'm concerned. We'll get a much better read of Ole's rebuild in a few years at that point history will dictate if he fecked it up or not.

We let Conte go to Spurs. Then, now we sack the clown 6 months late (I argue 2 years too late) and plan to install another shitshow in Fletcher? Nice one Glazers, never change.

Ole's terrible transfer business and man management has left us in a worse position and a more unbalanced squad than even when Mourinho was self-sabotaging. What a waste of 3 years. Thanks for all the lies, United DNA waffle and starting up the nepotism in the club, Ole. Yeah, not really.

You're going to get hounded for this but I agree with you.

You have to look at his tenure over the entire 3 years in an objective manner. £440million spent, zero trophies and horrible football to boot. It's been a very poor managerial appointment, and arguably our worst post-Fergie. I'd also like us to bust the myth of him being responsible for 'stabilising' the club. The fact is, anyone that succeeds a toxic Mourinho would have had a positive bounce purely on the basis of them not being Mourinho.

not really arguable. Worst appointment at a top club (given the length of the stay and resources poured in) since the last few decades at the very least.

Can you belittle someone by calling them a 5 year old and then say to someone else that they need to grow up?
Yes. I wasnt actually belittling anyone however. The comment was "The worst manager in my lifetime"

So I naturally assumed he was born after Moyes.

The common here is the Glazers and unfortunately they are not going anywhere, I don’t want be so negative but our problem is we don’t have football minds we just have some business men.

I don’t care. I can’t even look my family in the eye at this stage anyway. I’ve got family friends that support Liverpool/Chelsea/City. What do I tell them?

Man, it is going to be so weird to see Zidane managing United. I really never thought this would happen, but it really looks like it's on the rails.

"Zinidene Zidane is the favourite to succeed Solskjaer on the Manchester United bench.

The managers of the Manchester club have demanded that the board speed up their file/demand/request."

(Girlfriend speaks fluent French). Sorry of this has been answered already, I havent read all 10 pages yet.

I'm not anti Scottish, I just wanted Moyes out.
If you're only going to get behind the team when they're winning of course you can go support Chelsea or some other Oligarch club. I'll even buy you a season ticket.

Now we're changing managers. I expect the same amount of vitrol and complaining when that goes south as well.
I dont know who you think you are telling me to go support Chelsea or some other Oligarch club, or who gives you the right to say I only support the team when we are winning, which is a load of bollocks, feel free to see if you can find even one post from me complaining when we were loosing from either Jose, or Van Gaal. I never believed Moyes was good enough and I never believed Ole was good enough before they even signed right from the start.
I've been supporting this club a lot longer than you my Norwegian United fan, so you can leave out the irony about buying me a ticket, I doubt you have ever even bought a ticket to Old trafford.
Now that you mention it now that we are changing managers why dont you go and support whatever club Ole goes to, you are obviously more an Ole fan a United one, hopefully now that he's gone we get to see less of you too.

You can 100% expect the United fans to belt out 'You Are My Solksjaer" at our next few games.

Moyes is much better manager than Ole is and ever will be. Neither are good enough for a top club.

Ole is Neville level of manager.

I'm too happy that he's gone to argue with Tom Cato.

Only downside is it wasn't earlier. Just make sure Carrick/McKenna also leave please

Don't give a shit about him. He failed and was the most annoying manager post SAF by far, even surpassing the likes of Mourinho, which takes some doing.

And even if he initially was in it due to love of the club, there's absolutely no doubt that at the end he showed himself to be a leech just like the others. So thanks for pocketing an undeservedly huge amount of money for being shite, lying to and deceiving fans, and ultimately refusing to resign.

After what's gone down, he'll always have a massive Rooney-esque question mark under his legacy.
