On a scale of 1-10, how optimistic are you feeling about the rest of the season?

Well?

I’m optimistic about the long term but I’m worried about this season. Trying to implement a new style of play can take time and can come at the cost of a few results. Hopefully we can push our way into top 4 this season and then progress on in the coming seasons to challenge/lift a title.

About a 4. Think this is a very different challenge to anything Rangnick had before. The club is huge, expectations are huge, egos are huge, club is under constant scrutiny from media and fans. Changes will probably not be as easy as in his previous clubs.

This season will be interesting. I'm happy with that. I think they'll be a lot of rough moments to come, but I'd like to think its for the greater good in the end.

Top 4 and some good cup runs, I expect that, and will take it.

I'd say I'm about a 7/10

4. The caf always swings between over-reactiny negativity and positivity depending on our last result.

This pretty much.

He does have a good batch of fixtures to bed in which should help him, and few injuries to deal with.

it wont be easy for him thats for sure but as much as i know about him he was always quite confident in executing his long term vision. i think it is the best thing that could happen for us as he is someone who is able to give a club a whole new structure and that is what we need after saf

I think you need to define the ranking scale. A 10 could mean to one person, the league, but to another, RR gets us top 4 comfortably.

Winning a league at this point should be 12 out of 10.

It might not work out but, after three lost years, at least there are grounds to hope again.

I would prefer to see evidence of us trying to implement a clear style of play, with improved individual performances across the board and finish 5th, than scrape 4th through luck and CR7 last minute winners.

I was literally going to post something g similar. I put my optimism at 10. Totally open and looking forward to seeing what comes next but I’m reading lots of posts connecting their optimism to title challenges or trophies. My optimism is solely linked to seeing us become an organised unit playing some good football for the first time in years.

i think we can win a trophy this year, but more generally feel the club finally may be headed in the right direction. even if we dont qualify for champions league, i think if things go well we can be fighting for the league next season.

10/10 Of course. I always expect us to win every game so why not. I enjoy some unfounded blind faith when it comes to supporting my footballteam.

Probably at 4, we are currently 14 points off the top through 14 games. Going to be tough even catching up. Top 4 itself is very difficult, given what we have shown this season.

We could have hired him 2 weeks earlier now he has admitted it will be limited lessons in training. The fact that he mentioned they haven’t even discussed what his role will be in consultancy is also worrying. How do you hire without having a clear vision?

Regardless, I’m excited to see how it pans out, but not very optimistic based on the last 8 years of nonsense.

I do hope this is the first step towards long term success.

We have a good squad, a good academy and some good players out on loan

Bringing some structure and organisation to the club as a whole should give us the framework for success.

The big question is "How long before we see the fruits of this work?"

9/10, we've got some fantastic talent it just needs a professional manager to get the best out of it. I'm happy we have one now.

More hope than expectation from me but I agree. Just have that feeling, Ronaldo comes alive under the lights at Old Trafford. A kind draw and we could realistically get to the semi-final.
My opinion won't be popular especially with Ronaldo's fans however if Rangnick is wise he won't start him against the top teams in the knockouts. Ronaldo will be very likely a passenger in such games unless Rangnick could perform some sort of miracle with our midfielders.

My expectation, result wise, is a top 4 and hopefully a good run in the CL. Football wise, some organised and structural implementation of the modern football, and fixing our defensive issues. That's not easy at all and I don't expect Rangnick could effectively implement all that in a few months. But at least some sight of that is required imo.

Rangnick will be under tremendous pressure here. Looking at the reaction of the caf after his announcement if we don't play some swashbuckling football and win 3-0 by mid time next match we'll see posters call him a fraud and demand his head I think.

It's about 7.

Now with Ralf I am more optimistic for the future cause he triggered euphoria.

A qualification for the CL would be awesome!

But I think we can make the right steps for the future!

The problem isnt with Ronaldo. You can put Martial, Cavani or Elanga and the result is the same, if not worse.

Ronaldo is the main hope for the rest of this season.

When it comes to the CL - I don't know why I feel a little bit more confident than maybe I should. Leagues look extremely weak, La liga (RM & Barcelona) , Serie A (Milans), Bundesliga (Dortmund) etc.

If we get a good draw - then suddenly we have C Ronaldo playing in a team that has started to learn how to press better than they did before- with defenders like Varane, Lindelof and Maguire.

With regards to the PL - I'm quite patient my self when it comes to management of United - I'm not crying for us to win titles quickly; because I'd rather build something towards a consistency rather than a one off.

Hopefully Rangnick can get us in to the top 4 whilst teaching the squad his tactics. If it doesn't then hopefully we can still see changes at the club - players like Rashford, Greenwood, Wan Bissaka, McTominay and others hopefully can learn alot and improve after many have questioned our poor coaching; which would have effected our young players the most.

You say you think we'll finish 5th and that you're a 7/10 on optimism for the season? How is 5th place a 7/10 on optimism? Where are the standards at this club?

Id like to see a coherent style of team play with everybody pulling together and knowing what to do. Seems like we’ve not had that since Zlatan. I’d like to see it become obvious who will and won’t be useful going forwards and the summer used to jettison the latter.

Id like to see Elanga and a couple of our other younger players contribute effectively and become part of the group. 4th and/or a trophy would be a nice bonus.

If you match us up player for player we are just as good as the other top 3 teams if not better. It all depends on how the players are used. Unfortunately, when you look at how the game is played today, the biggest change I think we need to make is to take Bruno out of the midfield. He is too good not to play, but I think he should be on the left wing. NOBODY plays with a #10 anymore, and I know some will say he played #8 at Lisbon, but he is not a central midfielder. He isn't disciplined enough to play in a #8. So as good as Bruno is, as long as we play a 4-2-3-1 I don't think we will get any better. Bruno and VdB have to be in the same starting line up and neither of them in the #10. Perhaps not everyone will see this the same as I do, but then again, most of you aren't on the same level as I am ;-)

Directly under the sun... NOW!
10.

Because i know we will finish top 4 and go far in champions league.

The main reason for the 10 is that we will play a style that is fun and attacking with great pressing instead of giving other teams waaay too much respect and defend with 7.
11. I’m just really anticipating watching a team with a purpose, as bad as LvGs football was to watch he had a plan - his successors have provided no consistency in terms of what they’re attempting. I don’t think the turnaround will be quick but we look to be trying to take a huge step forward which is good to see.
10! No time for being cautiously, or slightly or any other in between state. Full on, 100mph optimism.

Although not perfect, we’ve got a great squad who will surely only benefit from some experienced management and coaching. Bring it on.
10. But I have felt the same for all our new managers since SAF (except Moyes, I was a 5 for him).

We now have a top top coach who knows the game inside out. My only worry is the six months he has to try and get the style of play he wants embedded into the players in this time.
Some will fit n quickly but with the gegenpress to work properly it takes the whole team to knit into it. I would like him to have a full season after the six months, but if he/we get a manager in, who can continue his plan so be it.
I am not expecting miracles for this season but maybe a 6/7 out of 10.

Yes, a cautious '7' from me. So many variables, how will Ragnick actually perform, how will players respond, and he has to manage those who may be disgruntled and their minds elsewhere.

OGS left us in a mid-table mess and it will take work to climb the table, we have no 'right' to finish top four, and it will be a battle.

But, I am optimistic that things will be better. They have to be.

My name's not Len but at this very moment in time, my optimism is gonna get a 10.
Based on Rangnick's CV married to our more than decent squad I am really excited for the future, more so for the long term but also for this season.

But if I put my feelings aside for a sec (sorry, I think I've been hypnotised by Ralf's presser), I should be going for 7/8 due to having doubts about how quickly our players will be able to translate Ralf's coaching onto the pitch. Just a case of when, more than if but I hope the fans will keep the faith with Ralf if things don't go according to plan initially.

As pointed out earlier by @MrBest the scale is very subjective, as for me, personally my 10 is , hoping to see the team and individuals evolve/progress from this recent state of stagnation and to begin to play good football on an increasingly consistent basis and for us to start dominating games again (boy do I miss that old United swagger, when we truly believed the words as "We are the pride of all europe...The Cock of the north..." boomed around Old Trafford, while the team would torture the opposition) or at the very least stop getting dominated, especially when facing lesser talented teams.
...Or as our new coach puts it "gain control of games".

So I'm just hoping for a properly coached team playing some decent stuff first then expecting (champions league qualification) trophies and titles to follow (see Klopp and the dippers) as opposed to expecting top 4/silverware whilst hoping for entertaining football.

Saying all that, we win later on today and we're 3 points off 4th. Lets just take it game by game, baby!

Over to you Ralf.

Just want something that has a plan to it and a means to measure to that plan. It became clear that Ole did not have a plan. No disrespect to SAF, but I think Ole picked that from him. SAF mastered the act of motivation but we all saw our tactical weaknesses in Europe. This Ragner guy seems to have a clear plan and will like to at least see us try it. Can’t wait to see Ragner press.

6.5/10. This season under Ole was a disaster so just getting better slowly would be fine. Picking up a lot of points to finish top 4 would be nice, with some clear style of play.

Are there really people who aren't optimistic?
Do you genuinely believe the guy is going to be able to undo the bad work of the board over the last 10 years or so? I'm not saying it's impossible, merely that I've absolutely no idea whether this is the guy who can do it.

So far so good but let's hope we're not relying on Fred wondergoals every week.

We should be very optimistic, at the start of this season after the signings we'd made most people expected a title challenge, and definitely top 4, and that was with some people having misgivings about Ronaldo who's now scored 12 goals in 16 games. We've got varane to come back into the team, probably sign a good midfielder in January. People have accepted mediocrity for so long under solskjaer this year and in previous years it's easy to forget just how optimistic we were this summer.

We have a team that should be capable of a title challenge, I mean even with the crushing defeats by city and pool, if we had beaten villa and Watford, two teams we should have comfortably dispatched we'd be 5 points off the top. This team has been playing with the shackles of solskjaer, and we're still not in that bad a position, top of our group in the champions League and 3 points from top 4, the rest of the season should be fantastic seeing what this talented group can do under a proper manager

The form varies almost every week from one extreme to somewhat stable state. If we won't achieve something of a winning run in upcoming games it will easily go for me from five to four / three.

Not looking forward to drawing strong opponent in CL either. Lots needs to happen in short span of time and it doesn't exactly work like that, especially when transforming almost every aspect of football in the middle of December.

We go on a winning run, go past through March full of strong opponents with less points dropped and it could only mean we're securing top 4. Gut feeling says this season things just simply not happening yet.

6. I think a lot of people here are downplaying the severity of our bad start to the season. It will be a real battle for that 4th spot, most people here seem to think it will be a walk in the park.
As it stands at the moment we're only 3 points off 4th place with 23 games left to play. With the squad we have and hopefully a manager who can get them ticking I can't see anyway were not getting top 4. Top 4 is the bare minimum I expect from this season.

4 points if Spurs win their game in hand. I think we're favourites for sure but it won't be easy. I'm not really worried about Arsenal and I do think it's only a matter of time till West Ham drop off. Spurs are the problem for me, especially if Conte gets 100m in the winter transfer window.
