Good to see someone else giving Timesplitters 2 the love it deserves. That was a wicked game and had so much replay value, it kept me addicted for ages.
Yep - a real gem

1. Shadow of the Colossus
2. PES 6
3. GTA: San Andreas
4. PES 5
5. Burnout 3: Takedown

Not a vintage round for me. I was in college and fell under the impression that beer and girls were a more exciting use of my free time.

I did play a hell of a lot of PES though, and Shadow of the Colossus is a beautiful game.

It is a stacked generation to be fair so something was always going to miss out. Surprised by the amount of votes for PES though. I loved them during that generation but for me voting for a football games seems pointless as they've been iterated on so much over the years.
Disagree. PES was special. No other football sim has come close to recapturing the quality of those games.

It's completely subjective and most people will go for the game they played the most so I completely get it. For me though PS2 era PES was arguably the most enjoyable it's ever been but that formula was perfected in the preceding generations by FIFA.

I'll always look on PES more favourably due to this era but I can't justify it being the game of the generation, same reason I didn't put Smackdown on my list, same with Double Dash (but that's more to do with me playing it a lot more at Uni when the 360 era had started).

This wasn't on the PS2. Are you thinking of Red Dead Revolver? If not, want to give something else another vote?

I've just tallied up pages 1-3 and it's quite close near the top.

Yes it is. Or PS360 era in any case, definitely not eligible for this round.
Call of Duty: World at War – Final Fronts is a first-person shooter video game for the PlayStation 2 console, released in November 2008. It is the counterpart to Call of Duty: World at War and features 13 missions in total, set in World War II. Wikipedia

I stand corrected, PS2 was not listed as a release platform on the World at War wiki page. This seems to be a different version and not just a straight port?

I didn’t have a PS3 you see only a PS2, that’s how I knew it was on PS2 my sister got it to me for Christmas.

Must be a different one to you know.

If everyone that voted for random PES games all voted for PES 6 (which I think is generally seen as the series high-point), it would have a chance of making the final. As it is, PES 6 is still doing ok on its own. Unlike other rounds, the top is quite congested this time with a much wider variety of games overall.

If a fecking football game comes out as one of the top 2 games of a generation as brilliant as this, I give up, ffs!

I think the big mistake is GREATEST in the title. It should have been FAVOURITE

But to be honest, why not right? PES 6 in its genre was as good as it gets in terms of sports games.

Although I don't see it overtaking the top 6, which are really close at the moment. Especially 2-6.

I think there needed to be some degree of leniency when it came to similar titles. Tekken 2/3, PES 5/6 a couple of examples where it could have been combined.

I have combined when the titles are updates and not sequels.

For example, Street Fighter 2 to Street Fighter 2 Turbo to Super Street Fighter 2 turbo etc are all updates of the same game so it's rolled into one game.

Tekken 2 and Tekken 3 are actually not updates but sequels, like Super Mario Bros. to Super Mario Bros. 2 etc... so those are seen as separate games.

It gets more difficult when it gets to sports games like PES.

Not sure if we should include these as sequels or updates. Sequels makes more sense as they are all new entries and not updates of the same game I guess.

But I hear what you're saying and have thought about this prior to starting this.

I think PES is a bit unique in this regard and should be given a pass and seen as 'PES' rather than any iteration.

PES 3 was incredible as a gateway game to the series, and in terms of awe, would be the winner for me despite not being the best game; PES 2014 was put down by me because I spent an ungodly amount of hours literally making my own game on it, but again, not necessarily the best outright playing experience. I think of 'PES' as all-encompassing on the PS2: I never think of a particular version of the game, but perhaps that's just me? Similar to my thoughts with ISS on the SNES and N64, actually.

I don't think it's the same as, say, fighters or FPS etc. which tend to have definitive versions in their franchises, because once the PES's get launched, the community, or the user, turn it into something else and it branches from there every time, or it certainly did on the PS2 - who do you know who played any version of it raw and untouched once they realised the possibilities in the edit? I think most hardcore PES users probably spent more, or an equal amount of time, editing it to playing it! even, so it's a really unique title, particularly for a console game, as it's usually PC titles that are a mod heaven/haven, not console games.

I don't see why.

There are football games brought out every year and every year they are amongst the most bought games. Even with all those numbers, the vast majority of football games are pretty crap.

PES 6 was a brilliant, brilliant game and probably the pinnacle of the genre. Nothing wrong with recognising that.

I'd be surprised if a football game gets more than a handful of votes in any other round.

Exactly. PES on PS2 is the pinnacle, and I don't really see how/why that's not being acknowledged.

PES 4/5/6 were the only football games likely to get votes in any round.

Actually contemplating buying a new PS2 (if they're still about/in production) just to play PES again.

Cant wait for the PC round and voting 5 FM iterations.
I have adjusted the rules a bit (in the opening post if you want to read it).

Essentially, yearly released sports games (e.g. PES, FIFA) and games with updates to the same game (e.g. Street Fighter 2) now all counts as updates. People are free to vote as they have been but all votes for the different iterations will count towards the same series as a whole.

Numbered sequels that are not yearly releases are still their own separate games (e.g. Gran Turismo, Gran Turismo 2 etc.).

I just went back and updated all the lists and luckily, this so far hasn't made a difference to the finalists in each round.

Good call. When it's done by generation this is a fair move. Obviously a PES vote in this generation should be sperate from one for the latest generation (lol).
