Julián Álvarez (born 31 January 2000) is an Argentine professional footballer who plays for River Plate. Mainly a forward, he can also operate as a winger.

Date of birth31 January 2000 (age 21)
Height1.70 m (5 ft 7 in)
Position(s)Forward / Winger

YearsTeamApps(Gls)

2019Argentina U2015(2)
2020–Argentina U239(2)
2021–Argentina5(0)

Man United could be the right fit for Alvarez
Playing at the World Cup is perhaps the quintessential dream of any professional player. South Americans, in particular, take a lot of pride in representing their country, and Alvarez might be no different. But there is no guarantee that he would be selected by Argentina if he stays at River Plate.

Man United could, if nothing, provide him with the limelight and platform for him to be noticed by the national team coaches. If he proves to be pivotal for us in any competition, that could go a long way in convincing Lionel Scaloni to select the striker for FIFA’s premier competition.

He's been talk of the town to join United this transfer window and there's no thread on him.

If we can get for 25m or less I’d say we take a shot, especially if Ralf rates him

Anyway won't call him a prospect as he's 21 and kinda proven in Argentina but nevertheless very excited about him

The price is pretty good so its pretty risk free and if the worst came to pass we'd be able to recuperate most of the cost

Martial will be gone in jan and cavani end of the season so he'll slot in nicely

I don't know about his attitude though hope that its good because as we've seen with Tony talent alone won't cut it

Really hope we sign the lad. It’s his ability to manipulate his body under pressure and keep cool which are signs I take from the videos I’ve seen.

I love the tenacity that a lot of South American forwards play with and it’s something we’ve missed at the club (besides Cavani over the past few months).

I honestly dont think that he will be a hit in epl, look at all his videos, you will see a lot of ridiculous defending in that weaker league.

I will rather use the amount to get Luka Jovic from Real madrid.
If we want to go shrewd, let it be on players in top league/club

We rarely sign players straight from South America don’t we? Da Silva twins, Forlan, anyone else?

These South American links are always nonsense. People just believe the first rumour they see every transfer window.

Looking at the video, he seems to be a clinical finisher with both fee, but overall touches, dribbling leaves a lot to be desired. He seems to be similar to more Higuain than Aguero.

I wasn’t too impressed either. The level looks terrible, especially the goalkeepers and he hardly looks brilliant in that context.

I definitely wouldn't turn my nose up at signing 21 year old Higuain  (Just wouldn't play him in finals)

Hard to judge players plying their trade in South America but if Ralf thought he was worth the risk and urged us to move for him, then I'd love to see us sign him.

Phil Brown gets some stick around here and the United subReddit, but he has some contacts at the club so I'd take him at his word.

I'm sure we've scouted Alvarez and maybe even contacted his agent. But that happens all the time. This is probably another Caicedo type rumour.

What a weird post. I want to tell you a rumour, but I don't want anyone to question me
Everytime he squashes a rumour he gets abuse from at least one idiot or two in his comments, so sort of understand where he's coming from tbh :annoyed:

This was always a long shot due to the stories picking up zero traction outside Argentina. Pity if Phil is correct because these types of transfers are always the most exciting to me, even though the success rate of unknown acquisitions hasn't ever been the best in recent times.

I get it, but that's what happens when you try to be an authority on a matter and stick your neck out on twitter, based on nothing but saying "my source". Reminds me of when that Jonathon shraeger threw a bit of a paddy about the same thing, all a bit odd.

Does have massive shades of Argentina sources trying to get people into action by mentioning us, I won't hold my breath!

He isnt. He has 6 assists, the 2nd most in his team, 2.1 dribbles per game, 2.1 key passes per game. Thats more key passes than Aguero in any league season and as many or more dribbles than Aguero in half of his league seasons.

Obviously Aguero was doing it in Spain and England after 18 years of age. This is not to say that Alvarez is better at those things, but the numbers are similar enough that if they drop in a top league he's still going to be there or there abouts in those aspects outside of goalscoring.

I'd suggest compare him with Lautaro at Inter, since Aguero would be very high expectations.

Appears to have two very good feet. Always a good sign for me and something quite rare even at top level.

He really isn't claiming to be an authority. He has only said what he's been told by someone who he feels is reliable.

Think that only holds water when you're chatting to your mates. When you make a living covering football and put your information out on a platform like Twitter you've got to have a bit thicker skin. Write a blog instead.

United want to trigger the release clause. A representative will travel to Manchester in early January.

To be fair, meeting his release clause and bringing him over here would be a pretty low risk investment. He'd still sell for a decent fee even if he wasn't quite good enough for this level.
