Is the closest player we’ve had to him recently Herrera?

Why was he only on the bench for Mali today?

Bissouma started... Just saying.

Where does Jonathan ‘I am told that’ Shrager fit on a reliability scale? I always thought he was a non-Irish version of Pilib De Brun.

He used to get leaked line ups and doesn't anymore so I'm guessing you have it right.

We have Fred and Scott Mctominay, and maybe, if we are feeling very generous we could include players like Donny and Pogba there as well. There is no big mystery to why our managers are picking Scott and Fred almost every time they are fit despite not being very good. We could definitely use another box to box player.
I look forward to us buying another box to box player and watching him fail as a #6.

Maybe he was on the bench because his head was somewhere else :o

I feel any fecking half decent central midfielder can make an instant impact in this squad with its unusually small pool of central midfielders and since Haidara has been at both RB Salzburg and RB Leipzig, that Ralf is well aware of what he can do anyway.

I generally agree with your posts but I don’t think we play him as a 6. I’d say the 6 is yet to come in. Haidara can also play as a rb and have good link up play. Think he’ll be a good utility guy.

It’ll be 6 with two 8s in front, Haidara as one of the 8s. Not sure where that leaves Bruno but I’m sure he’ll remain an important player for us.

Looks like he played an inside right position against us. Not even a box to box cm.

Will no doubt get shot down soon by the usual sources. Hope not though. Literally any signing in CM is welcome.

I looked back at this and the match reports seem to have him as the right wingback for that game, and both right fullbacks they had were injured for that game (Klostermann and Henrichs), so he could have been a makeshift there.

I'm happy we're going after Haidara (assuming this is true). He's very talented and an improvement on our current cms. However, I think we really need a more defensive mid signed also. I don't think Zakaria is great by any means but I think we should get him because Matic can't keep playing. He's not up to the role and we have literally no alternatives for the position due to how poorly our other cms understand their defensive role in front of our penalty area. Get Zakaria in cheap as 1st choice dm for rest of this season and then go for a top dm like Rice in the summer (could be another but this seems to obviously be our dream choice for the position and haven't heard talk about any others frankly). We need 2 new starters and 3 new cms for depth anyway imo considering Pogba's almost certainly off in the summer and Matic is entering the final year of a contract that absolutely should not be renewed.

Funnily enough, Shrager is one of the usual suspects to shoot down such stories so there may be something in it if he’s saying there is something going on. I just have no idea what his reliability is. I think he’s a Manchester based freelancer who is a Utd fan and has interviewed Utd alumni ranging from Brian McClair, Gary Neville and even Martin Edwards.

Yeah that’s encouraging as he usually does slay dreams. Until Whitwell gets involved I refuse to get sucked in. The Athletic are the gold standard for me at the moment.

Whitwell said in the last podcast that there are murmurs of a couple of conversations but he can’t trust and report them until he has thoroughly vetted his sources.

We don't play with a 6. Better quality midfields are required either way.
I'd say that's only because we don't have one that can play every game. Better quality is required.

This is fine, but what do we do in the mean time? We're not going to buy two midfielders this window. We'll have a player that's probably a bit better than McT and Fred. We'll still be without the player that's mostly needed for at least another 4 months. Unless this guy is an absolute beast, and can transform the midfield on his own, I don't see a whole lot changing without the profile we need.

I really wanted us to sign a #6 before anything else. My hope might be misguided, but I hoped that adding one would seriously improve whoever is playing next to him.

In fact, SportBild have been banging the drum about Newcastle going all out for him.
What do you think of him?

My take: unspectacular signing but could be a very solid PL player and a good utility player for the right team. As @CloneMC16 said. It’s quite a strange one seeing as we already have a few box to box and 2 RB. i would have thought we could go a little more outside the box and cheaper than this or spend an extra 10 million and get someone exceptional. I trust Ralf anyway.
