We got knocked out by a League 1 Leeds at OT a decade or so ago. And that performance was for more toothless than the one we had tonight. On a different night we score 4 and this discussion wouldn't even exist.
That was with a second string, players like Obertan and a couple of first teamers.

The line up we had was Kuscack, Brown, Evans, Neville, Fabio, Wellbeck, Gibson, Anderson, Obertan, Berbatov, Rooney and we brought Giggs, Owen and Valencia. Hardly our U-23s. Obertan and Fabio aside, most of these players featured regularly in the first team.

This against a much hated rival from a Football League 1 and under Fergie's stewardship, which is a tier below the championship.

Sorry man, but tonight wasn't even close. We actually played some decent footy. That match back in 2010 was pure torture.

You don’t know how football generally operates if you blame Rangnick for this.

By starting a very strong team his plan was always to bury the game early on and see it off in the second half with the subs. It wasn’t to be, but it wasn’t his fault that Ronaldo, Bruno and Rashford were atrocious in their finishing tonight, and it certainly wasn’t his fault that the referee awarded Middlesbrough an incredibly dubious goal.

Hysteria over him after that game makes no sense, as other posters have said.

Clear cut chances missed from simple positions; most created from turnovers btw, and relatively few chances conceeded.

It's difficult to look at this as anything other then a humiliation. But if you take a step back and look at the game, it's a game we should have won multiple times over. The players let us down.

Yea i agree.

Maybe one could argue ronaldo is getting too old. But really we should have hammered them tonight.

This was basically our full strength line up bar De Gea, 2010 clearly wasn't. But yes losing to Leeds 12 years ago was worse, because it was Leeds.

I know mate. Pisses me to this day the way we just capitulated that day. The only other match that makes my blood boil to this day is that 4-4 against Everton.

In a way, tonight felt the same way. Difference was, Everton created a couple of really good chances, while Boro just did a smash and grab on us.

Nothing about today’s performance was on him. We didn’t even have a structure or even simple patterns of play with Ole. You can visibly see the difference and we created loads of chances. We may have lost today yes but the last few games and his willingness to adapt is really promising for me.

Blaming the manager seems a bit mad if you actually watched the full game

For me the manager’s job is to give his players the best chance to succeed and make decisive changes if necessary. The first part he excelled. I’m not sure about the second part but honestly I can’t think of a change or timing that would have been more effective. Maybe Mejbri instead of Fred? Mata certainly did his part in pulling the strings and also put away his penalty.

People who are blaming the manager have not actually watched the game.

Amongst footballing managerial 'Gods'
If this was a team in the premier league, I would somewhat understand giving the quality of the league. But, it was Middleboro..

Ralf is not the guy and now I am changing my opinion about if ten hag or Pochettino isn't available that he should stay on. I think we should get Zidane as third choice even if he is just a more lucrative version of ole. Ralf time as a manager should just be restrained to this season, unless he somehow pulls a mericle in the Champions League. But, even though, it might just be a di Matteo or tuchel moment

Any other top 6 team would’ve scored 4-0 that made 28 attempts. So its not on ralf anymore.

We missed an open goal that even werner would shoot and a rare penalty miss then a handball allowed.
It wasn’t our night honestly.

Only thing I could blame Rangnick for today was the late subs and bringing on Fred instead of Hannibal. Even then I'd be being incredibly petty and those decisions didn't really affect much.

Across the Universe....from Old Trafford.
Rangnick helped fixing leaking defense a bit, but then again we're now not scoring and not finishing teams off.

While I agree that this so called group of players need to react somehow, I still expect nothing from Burnley game. The amount of damage and rot looks quite out of control at the moment.
Ralf is trying to fix the mess that has been accumulating since the Glazers took over.
Fergie winning the titles hid the the long term investments the club needed to be run as a football club.

Right from asking a former manager to appoint the next man to this last window when no DM was brought in.
They brought in Ronaldo in the summer for Shirt Sales and ad revenue when we needed a DM desperately.
How effective was Ronaldo tonight?
This window. Again no DM.
Hey Pogba is available. yeah. But for how long?
He will have a couple of good games and then he will be jogging around the field or be injured.

This is what the Glazers do.
Balance the books.

The only decent appointment they have made since Fergie left is Ralf.

Poch next?
God help us.

United are fecked as a football club mate.

EDIT:

All the complaints really should be in the Glazers Out thread.

Actually thought he had us doing the right things tonight. We were winning the ball back high, creating turnovers that were threatening to the opposition, creating chances. It wasn't bad for at least the first half and some periods in the second, although it became progressively less convincing. I think the stats tell the story.

It's Middlesbrough so it feels like very faint consolation right now but you do have to look at performances not just results in the short term, and then take a view on a manager when there is greater evidence. Problem for Ralf is it's pretty hard to separate results and performance as caretaker as you're pretty much there exclusively as a rescue act, it's not so much about long term planning in this particular capacity. So to go out of the cup is a huge blow to his chances of coming out of this tenure with credit.

Considering the toxic environment RR inherited I honestly believe in improving that even a few percent is commendable. I can see shoots of life creeping in with chances created and a lot stemming from progressive passing. Although fred still likes to pass to the defence instead of taking risks, even he has really improved with probing passes. Players looked sharper tonight and both rashy and sancho both look interested albeit at times erratic...rashford special. Pogba showed at times that pure baller he has in him too. Perhaps even the last minute win against West ham has injected spirit which also could be partially credited to the change in attitude RR is instilling. As down as I am I'm trying desperately to believe this is turning around and Ralf can walk upstairs in the summer with his head held high having secured 4th place....and a CL trophy....Nah I'll keep it real for now. I'd settle for not embarrassing us just against Atleti. If we secured 4th and began building foundations for sancho & elanga, possibly get rashford brimming with confidence again, I'd be like a dog with 2 dicks

This result is not on Rangnick obviously, we should've won it comfortably after 90 minutes really. But I do think that his CV as a manager is not strong enough and staying in a consultancy role, as planned, might be the best solution. Maybe he could stay as a manager for 2022/23 season as well, but only if we have someone like Enrique or ten Hag ready to take over from there. It'll probably be Rangnick untill this summer, then Pochettino. If ten Hag does a really good job in Champions League, that could change our board's mind and make them go for him instead.

As long as Ralf can instill a different, better culture and way of working in this team while he's an interim, I'm happy. Want us to finish top 4 as well, we should given our's and Spurs' and Arsenal's squads, but that means nothing if we don't start doing things right.

I agree, we haven't had a manager as close to Fergie's management style as Rangnick is. We needed this to clean up the mess we were in. Unfortunately, he too could be thrown under the bus if he doesn't get top 4.
Well, Mourinho was blunt and open about issues with the players and their bad performances, and that didn't go down well with the fans. What's the difference here?

Comedy gold this is. Everything was always Ole's fault but everytime Ralf has a shite game nothing is ever his fault. Fact is he fielded his best 11 and got knocked out by middleboro and his overall results and performances since taking over have been far from impressive.

Six wins out of your first 11 games, is a very poor showing for an interim manager at this club. Especially one who hints he wants the permanent job.

Whatever you believe of his system, he ain't good enough.

He's got a football philosophy though hasn't he. Fans love a continental manager that figures out his tactics on a calculator instead of coaches like Mike Phelan who just shout "come on!" at the players.

Seriously though, the fact there was no new manager bounce says the problem wasn't/isn't the manager. Player management is the problem, bad apples have spoiled the cart now. It's a huge undertaking trying to figure out how to rebuild the squad after getting rid of the wasters, there's nothing to suggest Ralf is the man best placed to do it, but even the better candidates will have a rough time here unless they root out our problems.

I agree we have big problems with this team but that doesn't justify for example losing to wolves at home or not being able to beat Newcastle or being 2-0 up to Villa and then end up almost losing. The manager has to take blame too. I expected him to do better than he has but it's been quite dire.

It was a good performance that was let down by poor finishing. Like one of the posters above said, we should've hammered them.

Hopefully we ignore these hints. Let him go to the advisory role, sell Ronaldo (to whom?), get a new man in and build a proper team built on modern values.

He is the best manager we've had since Van Gaal. I feel like he could do a good job next season. If they find someone else who is much better, go for it, but he knows well what he's doing.

Why did Sancho play on for so long when clearly injured!?
He wasn’t injured. Rangnick mentioned in the post match interview that he was tired. He mentioned Bruno got a knock but played the entire game.

Both should be available for Tuesday game

Yep its rangnicks fault that the ref bungled it and our highly paid players missed penalties, an open goal and a few sitters.

Knobs.

We have a ole inner right here.

With ole we used to play shite and lose, with rangnick we played much better and lost because of missed pens, missed sitters, shit ref awarding a goal to the opponent.

Ole as a manager is not fit to lace rangnicks shoes and rangnick isn't even a top tier manager.
