Individual performances were poor, but I though Ralf's selection and tactics were way off

Bruno and Pogba were too high, Fred was basically the only midfielder.

Grandpa Matic gave us much better balance.

This was also definitely an AWB game if youre ever going to play him, with their threat down the left and Felix's dribbling.

Schalke's manager looks familiar here. The fact is the man has never been United class.
Yeah, taking Schalke to a Champions League semi-final (the best thing they've done in about 60 years) and getting beaten by the greatest manager to ever live is just shocking.

Best result under circumstances. Should be the final realisation that Rashford has no right to start another game.

He needs a CDM. He can't rely on Matic for 90 and the best he has is McTominay.

For people moaning about the midfield selection tonight, who should we have played?

He must just not be familiar with rashfords performances over the past few years and Marcus must be fecking amazing in training. I can see no reason why any rational person would start him in games like tonight he is an absolute liability. Hope ralf has learned now,

I thought the subs were good at the time, and we did look better after them

we were let down by shit individual performances tonight more than anything

what use are tactics when 4 or 5 of your players have stinkers?

Jesus, the state of this thread. Starting line-up was unacceptable but made amends with his subs. Also, has anyone considered the fact that tonight was an away game and we've just had a right old scrap on a waterlogged pitch away at Leeds just a few days ago?

Proactive and got subs right. No excuse for players starting as cold as they did

Subs were good but he should've brought on Elanga on a lot earlier. We could've won that if we had Rashford off the pitch.

Believe he only managed them in their QF tie prior but yeah silly thing to bring up as a stick to beat him with.

We caused many of our own problems tonight. It's very hard for players to shine when there are so little options available for them to pass to.

I like Rangnick, and in no way do I feel he deserves criticism, but it's telling that he also cannot get this set of players to coordinate into anything remotely resembling a functional midfield.

Tactics are contributing to players underperforming, but it's something I always gave Ole a lot of slack for, and I'll do the same with Ralf, because I don't think it's possible with this selection of players. It's easy to see why we always relied on McFred as a combination in there

That's true, but as that QF included a 5-2 win at Inter Milan (which is the greatest game Schalke played in the last 20 years), it's justified to praise him a bit for that.

The players let him down imo. I did not like the formation in the first half, but I suspect it would have worked out much better if we actually played some football.

He changed things perfectly in the second half and got a great result in the end.

Best thing with this performance is the learning part. He knows a lot more after this.

Not a happy bunny, calling out the 1st performance as it was, i.e shite.

I don't blame him, the likes of shaw, Pogba, rashford were atrocious.

I think he is having a pop at rashford by saying more players need to play like elanga.

He seems angry! Love it.

Seems shocked by the first half, not protecting the players. Saying players need to look to Elanga as a role model.

Explained the Vic situation well, makes sense.

I blame Ole for this, to be honest. He had several windows and plenty of budget to solve it, but he chose not too

Rangnick: "I wish a few other players would take him [Elanga] as a role model."

That’s one hell of a statement. Bravo Rangnick.

The set up for the start wasn't the best, but the important thing is that he recognised it and changed things. Spot on with subs so far.

I like him a lot.

I don't think it's having a pop exactly but he's spot on. We simply don't look like we are enjoying our football for whatever reason, and Rashford is chief amongst them. No smiles or joy in our game at the minute, excepting
Elanga. Edit: And Fred, and maybe Fernandes.

Didn't mind Vic playing RB, explained it as set pieces (Athletico dive for FKs), also for a back five if needed but plan goes in the bin if you concede inside ten mins (as Rangnick explained)

You can make a pig wear makeup but it's still a pig. Ralf has made United hard to beat. Can't expect wild and crazy improvements in three months. I'm happy with his performance.

As well he shouldn't. I 100% blamed them for that first half and not Ralf. No way would send them out to start the game like that.
Honestly, players need to park their egos or whatever other issues they have and concentrate on putting in the very best performances. Fans have faithfully supported them and paying hard earned money to go watch them play and the players need to remember that and be humble.

Oh I see. I haven't seen the interview as didn't want to give BT one more minute of viewership

The important thing is that he recognised what's not working and wasn't afraid to try something else.

Not to derail the thread, but I think the intention was always going to be to rebuild the midfield this summer, but the season fell apart before he got the opportunity. Ultimately though, yes, that decision was a major factor in him losing his job.
