We've been caught out badly tonight. Athletico haven't pressed like this all season and it looks like we haven't prepared for that.

Lindelof at right back is a good idea working on the theory that Atleti will play in a low block. He's a good long passer and he could find a runner in behind. But their press has been so relentless that we've instead found ourselves in a situation where we're getting overrun in midfield and Lindelof hasn't been able to pick out a pass.

Where's the signs of his coaching? Pep, Tuchel and Klopp didn't need more a couple if months to at least show a difference. What have you seen thats new under Ralf?
Are you blind? Or do you just not watch any of our games?

He's an interim though, I'm sorry if you were expecting Klopp or Pep to show up. He's a behind the scenes man with some good footballing ideas but he's not an elite tier manager.

His job is to get United top 4 with a dysfunctional and undisciplined team of players.
He's not going to get top 4 though, that's the problem. We're going to get shown up over the next month.

Out. For all of his buzzwords, his tactics are shite. Combined with our shit players we got a platter of shit served on the pitch

Pep nearly had City finishing outside the top 4. Klopp was celebrating draws against West Brom and Tuchel didn't come firing out the blocks either.

I find comparing Rangnick an interim who will in theory pass the baton to another to manager to these permanent appointments
That's absolutely fair enough but the thing is that you could see the difference with those teams. Even when Liverpool finished 7th or 8th you could easily see what was happening under Klopp and you could see it quite quickly. Unfortunately I haven't seen that under Ralf even though I desperately want to.

I like Ralf but there is no defending that lineup tonight. However you set it up and with whatever formation, players are out of position and unbalanced. He should know better by now.

He probably got the tactics wrong but these players are just making it worse.

I honestly don’t think any any manager can get the tune out of these players

The sooner we move on from these jokers who are more interested in flicks, tricks and goal celebrations for their youtube highlights than being efficient, effective competitive footballers the better.

I guess thats what he wants and hopefully the club do too.

The lineup was a huge mistake but he corrected it in second half and all his subs were pretty good. Matic for Pogba was the key in us getting anything out of this imo.

Start Lindelof, then put in wingbacks in second half to play like a proper team. Genius.

Great subs again

Matic was excellent when he came on. And the fullbacks improved us too

Elanga got the draw

Schalke's manager looks familiar here. The fact is the man has never been United class.

He's marginally better than Ole but that should be the final nail in his coffin if it wasn't in already.

It's been fairly obvious that once we come up against anybody good we would struggle.

His first eleven was awful: Lindelof is not an RB, Fred can't play as DM and Rashford should not be anywhere near the team. However, he rectified with the subs.

His subs were good again today but this time it felt like that today they were more compensating for errors with the the initial line up than changes to add impetus to the team. This team has no hope of winning the competition but it would be nice to go a bit further and the result gives us a decent chance of going through.

Got it wrong in the first half, but we majorly improved in the second half when he subbed off the players that were likely to get red carded. We actually got at them a little bit in the second half even if we didn't create me, we really need to spread these kind of moments across a whole match though.

Needs to drop Maguire, put Varane and Lindelof in the middle. Absolutely needs to permanently drop Rashford, especially with Elanga in the form he is in

Aw come on, the man is using players that have failed under several managers, with no pre season and a bunch of players that want out. He's doing a decent job

What the hell are you on about? How much did you watch of Schalke during the second half of the 2010/11 season? I’m assuming not much.

Reckless going into this match with Bruno and Pogba in midfield together. But he was right in his pre-match presser, that this was about navigating the emotional atmosphere and I'm sure he'll be delighted with the team's ability to keep their cool after its absolute worst showing by a mile under Rangnick in those first 45.

Hopefully the lessons learned are that this midfield cannot work against better opposition and Rashford is only to be used as a sub for the rest of the season.

I'm sure the tempo in our build in the first half was the most anti-rock and roll football he's ever seen in his life.

Lindelof at RB
Fred as the 6 behind Brogba
Rashford in his current form

God only knows what he was thinking with them. Why Shaw's back in over Telles is another mystery

The Lindelof call didn’t work out, and he clearly had no desire to play that midfield, but he’s hardly swimming in options, is he?

He knows Matic can’t hack that tempo over ninety minutes and he knows that Fred isn’t a defensive midfielder. He got it wrong, but there’s no obvious alternative given the gaping holes in our squad.

I hope he's better upstairs because he has been an absolute failure of a signing. Things have gotten worse under him. Hell even those praising the Leeds performance which was a drag compared to how we dismantled them time and again under Ole. The only hope I have is that by the summer he'll know exactly what we need to do to progress but unfortunately he won't be allowed to do it by the higher ups.
What was the score at Elland Road last season with half a crowd?

Shocking lineup. Not sure what he was thinking.

I’ve been a fan thus far but that was awful for such a big game. His subs put it right but how did he not see how unbalanced that team was?

Schalke was 11th at the time in the league, he just took them over a few weeks before that match and first thing he managed a 5-2 against CL holders Inter and kicked them out of the CL to even reach that stage. No shame in losing this.
