Putin's declaration is for local consumption. The Russian public was onboard for a quick operation to protect the Dombas region from the government of Kyiv. Many consider that government to be both under influence of neo-nazis in Ukraine and to be led by a puppet of the US. And either way Russians want their "brothers" to be protected.

Now that it is clear Putin went far beyond the regions that he had the mandate to protect, he has to justify the war, and the only plausible justification is "Russia is under threat". And when you are under threat you get the Nukes ready. He intends to divert the Russian public from discussing the unlawful invasion of Ukraine and the sanctions that will hurt them massively. So he has to make them focus on the "existential threat to the Russian nation posed by the evil West".

All well and good but what do you feel about your username being an anagram of Putin?

I just can't see a world where Putin allows this to end without Ukraine making concessions that no right minded country can afford. I really do hope I am wrong but he will need something of significance to sell along with the rest of his failing propaganda and how does Zelenskyy give anything up in the face of the bravery their people have shown.

I can only see this being ended by the Russian people, I hope so badly to be wrong because god knows how and when that would play out.

if their invasion has taught me anything about russia’s military capability and execution i can only imagine that they’re probably all daisy chained together by a fuse wire and putin lights the end of it with a sparkler and they set themselves off one by one with all the pomp and circumstance of a damp bonfire night.

They'll be spread across the nuclear triad. Most are ICBMs, whether in bunkers or on mobile launch platforms, some will be bombs on planes, and the rest will be on subs.

Subs maintain second strike capability, meaning if Russia launches nukes, the US, UK, and France would be able to respond. Russia also allegedly has a dead-man switch on their nukes.

Don't hold your breath over these talks. They are likely Putin's attempt to lower the temperature on sanction momentum and make him appear vaguely rational.

Yeah, or even "we tried to negotiate but they refused." And it'll turn out that the Russian delegates immediately demanded Ukraine territories and the installation of a puppet for whatever remained.

Then Putin can go back to threatening everyone with WW3 and refusing to back down when his bluff is called. I hope that we're all wrong and everything somehow goes back to normal with Ukrainians and Russians holding hands singing songs of peace under a double rainbow.
