It is David.

Ronaldo has had a terrible stretch of games and his lack of clinical finishing (hi Watford) has set back the team more than David this season.

De Gea will probably get it but he shouldn't. He has to make more saves than he should and it's because he is poor at everything but shot stopping. I am 100% convinced that we would concede less goals with Henderson in goal even though he's not as good of a shot stopper...
David also had very good positioning, anticipation, and handling for a GK. He's even swept up a few more times this season than before. He's always stood on his line and didn't claim as many high balls into the box.

He's also has won club player of the year 4 times and won PL player of the month this past season once. How many PL GKs win a player of the month?

He's been very good this season.

If we lost games, it must be because the gk let the other team score.

De Gea has been brilliant this season so it has to be him

I'd go with Ronaldo, he was key in us advancing in group stages of UCL. Even when he was invisible against Atletico, De Gea has been good but hasn't been really great meaning like that 2018 season.

This season has been so shit, that somehow it feels neither Cristiano nor De Gea deserves it nevermind the rest of the players.

United have dropped many points due to poor finishing and that also has had to do with Ronaldo. On the flip side, how many points has David saved singlehandedly?

Ronaldo will probably get it because he is Ronaldo and visually it is better to have an offensive player be player of the year than a goalkeeper.

Without David we'd be 10th right now. If Ronaldo was more clinical in the games we steamrolled we would easily be level on 3rd.

Recency bias of course is going to get the masses saying Ronaldo in here.

Has to be De Gea. Ronaldo has not been consistent enough to merit the award. It's not that long ago that he scored just once in eleven games, over the space of two and a half months.

He's having a Berbatov season from a decade ago. His goals are coming in hattrick batches and papering over his lack of consistency scoring.
If I am not wrong, Ronaldo has more match winning/important goals than any other players in Europe this season though.

For the saves he makes he's been good. I'm not doubting his shot stopping ability in the slightest, however, how many of those saves would he not have to make had he been more aggressive or been better at directing his defense? And despite what you may think, his positioning is not good, does not anticipate well and his handling is horrible. Not sure what you're even talking about there. In fact, if we compare De Gea's stats to Allison

-------------------Punches---High Claims---Sweeper--Saves
De Gea-----------5------------------8-------------------5-----------111
Allison-----------18----------------17-----------------23----------62

So in a team that has a far superior goals against than we do, Allison is 3 times more active in helping out his defense than De Gea is. So think about it....if those 111 saves that De Gea made, how many would he not have had to make if he was more active? Or on the other side of the coin, if Allison wasn't as active to help his defense, perhaps the opponent would have more shots on goal which would allow Allison to make more highlight reel saves. Sure, he would likely concede more as well, but they wouldn't be considered his fault, just like De Gea isn't blamed. In fact, he will probably be rewarded for it...

A keeper like Alisson is better overall. His positioning within goal to prevent shots, David, is very good. As it relates to sweeping behind his defense it isn't as good, but we all know he doesn't go outside his box much in relation to clearing the ball as a last man preventing a potential shot.

And handling, by way of catching and palming the ball away and limiting rebounds, David is very good.

You're very critical of de Gea and I wouldn't believe that you wouldn't have been very critical of David for example when he came out aggressively from his line against Norwich in the first half to block Pukki's shot near the top of the box.

Might draw ridicule, but actually a more than decent shout. Has a massive impact on games, always gives 100%, and too many times, his good work gets ignored.
He's far from perfect but by far the only player that you could say has tried to do is job under all managers.

I dislike the entire squad, none of them really deserve it, but Fred would be the least worst option out of the bunch of them.

Making this thread after Ronaldo's hattrick, OP is smarter than he looks

But I'd actually vote Ronaldo anyway, siply because I am tired of voting GK as our player of the season. The fact that Ronaldo will win it just goes to show how dire rest of our squad is, he is basically having Rashford 2019/202 season, with good CL campaign.

Ronaldo. He’s not been perfect but he’s scored 2 hat tricks in 3-2 wins (before this season we only had ONE post-Fergie hat trick), dragged us through the UCL group stage and been the only exciting part of the season.

De Gea has made some great saves, but he’s still on his line too much.

Difficult to look past Ronaldo this year for the sheer amount of games he's won for us single-handedly. He's a goal machine.

Honourable mention to Fred. He looked like a lost cause before Rangnick arrived, but he's improved beyond comparison since then. One of the few positives this season.

It should be De Gea. Keep voting for our keeper to indicate that this squad is trash and concedes 423756 chances every game. All signalling is good signalling at this point.

A week ago hardly anyone was even mentioning Ronaldo for POTY

I'd still go with Fred for a consistently good season

Dig up stupid!
Lindelof has been pretty good when he's played

Fred's perhaps been most consistent though its a low bar

Struggling beyond that, give it to Dave as usual I suppose

Allison doing all those things that DDG doesn’t to a high standard leads to him needing to make less saves. Never mind the fact that he plays behind a better defensive unit. Context.

Ronaldo has not even scored in 17 of the 26 PL games that he has featured in. 10 of his 15 goals have came in 4 games alone. The games he has performed great in can be counted on one hand.

And I can’t understand all the people saying that De Gea’s saves have masked other flaws in his game that are arguably detriment to the team with a straight face and then picking Ronaldo, who also has clear flaws in his game that are arguably detriment to the team outside of goals.

There’s only three players in it. A lot of hate for Ronaldo which is incredible to me. He’s provided the only moments of joy all season. Fred has had a good season for him and our fans love a trier, Dave has been good this season despite his flaws.

What a terrible season

tbh, they should really decide to cancel the awards this year, or at the most only give out the youth trophy. I don't think any of them deserve it, my preference is Fred as the best of a bad bunch.

Tbf, atleast there's a debate this year.
In the 2 LVG seasons, the Moyes one and even the one under Mou where we finished 2nd, Dave was the only contender

You don't like Ronaldo as a person yet you have Giggs in your username. A bit wierd
Not really weird. Both are cnuts as people but one of them is also a massive narcissist, way to arrogant and as petulant as a 3 year old and it isn't Giggs.

Dave. Fred has come on well in second half of the season but Anyone that can say 'fred' and 'consistent' in the same sentence is mental. If effort win POTY fair enough but performance at united surely has to be the deciding factor

The fact it's between our goalkeeper and Ronaldo says it all really.

Is there a player's POTY award? If so that will make interesting guesswork about dressing room cliques

The awards do for this will be the most embarrassing of all time.

An utter disaster of a season and they're going to spend a night handing out awards for each other?
