There were so many times where a pass was on and he just did not see it. Deeper role doesn’t suit him but still think he has a use within a squad.

Somehow managed to look awful, even today. Added nothing. Has to be the first player we upgrade.

Yup. Was thinking that watching. Even the most vanilla CM will very occasionally play a defence splitting pass. Look at El-Nehny at Arsenal, for example. Or Henderson at Liverpool. With McT you know he will never do something like that. Either cause he can’t see them, or can’t execute them. Just not gonna happen.

He needs to be shipped out as well. Just cannot be in midfield with being so awful technically.

When he's in a midfield with players like Mata and Matic, he reminds me of that old John Smith's advert, where they're all doing some nice keepy ups, and then Peter Kay steps up and launches the ball into someone's garden.

My man needs to play as a CDM in a good pro clubs team to understand where he needs to be. Simply no idea what he’s doing out there.

There was a moment in the second half that just sums him up, Ronaldo had the most open channel ever down the right, all he had to do was play a piss easy clip over the top and Ronaldo was through, and instead he just passes it 5 yards, oblivious to any form of meaningful attacking play.

That was more like it. Decent, solid performance, one or two errors in the second half but kept things ticking nicely.

Thought he was ok. His passing is still ridiculously safe though, and it's almost like he fails to see what's on around him.

He could have shot or played in Ronaldo instead he passes it behind Ronaldo .
He’s not even good enough to be a squad player

He played well tonight, as did all the team.
Credit where it's due.
Well done Scotty et al

He was ok, he's obviously going to be in the squad for a while yet but cannot be a starter next season, just way too limited.

Shouldn't be near the starting 11. The lad tries but he can't fecking pass and he is supposed to be a Midfielder

This lad can't even be a squad player.

you can't be a professional footballer in the PL if you don't know how to pass a ball and do it quick.

Playing alongside Matic really emphasized his lack of creativity and guile didn't it. He is just so rarely progressive in his passing. It seems like only his size separates him from what Cleverley used to do.

I keep hearing that he "hides", but I'm not exactly sure what the hell it means. How can you "hide" in front of 74k people (and millions watching on tv)?

Want the facts? OK. Great.

In the EPL this season:

Fred: Accurate passes per match - 44.1 (84)
McTominay: Accurate passes per match - 33.3 (85%)
Matic: Accurate passes per match - 37.7 (86%)

Is it that much of a differential? 11 Accurate passes per match between McTominay and Fred. And we don't exactly play Pep possession football.

The way that some people talk is that his United equivalent gets 100+ passes per match.
To be fair, Matic has made far more sub appearances than McFred, which would bring down his average numbers in comparison. Fred is a poor passer too.

It's strange, I thought McT constantly hides throughout games?
Yet had more touches of the ball than most last night.
Not for the first time this season either.
I can see him starting next season if he plays like he did last night.

Thought he was poor last night but it didn’t matter. At least he was involved in the game more than usual but all that did was highlight his lack of quality on the ball.

Seems unthinkable he’ll start as many games next season, an upgrade there would make a huge difference but can’t replace everyone this summer.

Whenever a 20m pass is on, he runs with the ball 15m towards the player and then passes the ball 5m. He doesn't trust himself passing the ball 20m, and probably rightly so.

He's just so painfully limited, he can't use his left or the outside of his right meaning the angles are wrong for him half the effing time.

Thankfully he won't be a starter next season.

Being afraid to do any ambitious passes is hiding.

He was objectively poor last night. He was just there but didn't influence the game at all

Really?

Amazing how the definition of 'hiding' changes to suit peoples views. You don't need to have an assist to influence games.

Where did I ask him to get an assist?

As a Midfielder he has a responsibility to help progress play. Passing sideways and backwards and doing little 5 years passes is not something to be raving about.

McTominay had 2nd most touches in the match against Brentford (100). Wish he would stop hiding! He should be getting 3000 touches!

Is that stat worthy of its own thread? No, but nor is the (false) stat on the title of this thread.

If the rebuttal is "it's only Brentford", yeah, well, the rebuttal to this thread is "It was against the European and World Champions". Also, it was McTominay's press that lead to our equaliser.

You can't post these things on here. It doesn't suit the narrative.

The next thing will be out of the 100, how many were sideways and backwards?

You will never win against agenda FC

More progressive passes than Mata last night, more progressive carries than our fullbacks, but he doesn't help progress play?

Dunno where you're getting your stats from but FBREF has Matic with more touches (and more passes) than McT, despite being subbed off in the 71st minute (McT played the full 90)

Bruno also had more touches (and more passes)

Fred was only one for 19 minutes but extrapolate his number of touches/passes to the full 90 and he would also be more involved than McT.

I can't imagine EtH tolerating such limited ball players.

If he plays it's because ten Hag has worked miracles with him. And nothing would be better than that, what with him being an academy player that obviously cares about the club.

He was fine last night but we have reached the point were his 6/10 performances are seen as 4/10, and people can't isolate their opinion of a performance in 1 game from their overall perception of the player.

Which is a bit pathetic.

What a modern looking website... I think the early 90s is missing it.

The stats site I use is SofaScore. It's trustworthy and reliable. I cross referenced it with WhoScored. And yes, it confirms that McTominay had 100 touches.

https://www.whoscored.com/Matches/1...-League-2021-2022-Manchester-United-Brentford

Yes. Bruno had more touches, 101. But McTominay had 78 successful passes. Bruno had 77.

It actually gets to the stages of splitting hairs. "McTominay had 1 less touch that Bruno = he's a champion at hide and seek".

You can't post these things on here. It doesn't suit the narrative.

Look I watch football with my eyes and I say it how I see it, I'm not asking you to agree.

Though I am surprised people actually think his passing is good enough for a Midfielder.

We all know he can progress plays with his carrying of the ball but as the youth saying goes the ball can move quicker than you can.

I think the issue is more that even in a game we where so dominant he wasn't up to much.

He thrives in games against teams like Leeds but other than that he has a lot of major flaws

I'm sure getting rid of McT will solve all the club's problems, the same way it did when Dan James, Fellaini and all the other unfashionable players were sold.

I really dont think yesterdays game is the one to use as an example of one way or another.
We have a bigger sample size to look at, and bigger example of what sort of player he is.

The whole 'hiding' thing. His positioning to receive theball from our defence is atrocious. His passing (going forward) has (on glances rather than stats) seem to have gotten worse. Maybe ETH will see him and think, I can get something out of him.

But hes not a midfielder for a team that wants to compete.
