At this point, it is obvious they will sell him.

However, not many teams are in for him. I feared City, PSG and Bayern as the main guys. City apparently distanced themselves (and are interested in Phillips), PSG and Bayern there were whispers, but PSG are potentially looking at Tchouameni it seems after Monaco asking for more money from Real and Bayern currently have their priority on Mane and Kalajdzic to replace Lewandowski. If Barca need to sell quickly and we are the only ones properly engaged, there is hope.

On second thought I'm not so sure going after this guy is all great, he'll be on massive wages might turn out good but not great to justify his wages.
He was good and not great at Barcelona and everybody is referring to his positional use, just like we give excuses to all all signings before this weaknesses resurface here.
We should probably be targeting a player from a smaller club from one of the lesser leagues were the price is lesser and wages is lesser, that's the way to go if we don't want a repeat of the Pogba scenario.
This

Give the lad Caqueret from Lyon a look. He's good in the tackle, is zippy and has sublime technique. I reckon he could be gotten for less than De Jong and will be a better player in the long run.

Not sure he is interested in moving this summer, just signed a new contract 2 weeks ago. He is a player i like, but maybe not for this summer.

Which reports are you referring to, here? I'm curious to see where this is all coming from.
That Gerard Romero fella.

I’ve got a source in the club that I’ve asked for information from. He’s never given me any transfer info before, just anecdotes of stuff from the training ground, so I’m not holding my breath. But figured I’d give it a shot. Even if he does tell me anything, I’m almost certainly keeping it to myself lest I get beaten with the ITK ban hammer in here.

I know a lot of people don't think highly of the club right now, but I still think it's an incredible opportunity playing for United, and we need players who are eager to be here. Barcelona won't be an issue that's for sure, but we shouldn't wait all summer for anyone.

Forget it and move on. We need to set our sights lower and build from there.

No, its from today. Most likely around the same time that Romero tweet. He did jump the gun but Barca has no choice but to sell him and we are the only contenders.

He's making absolutely no sense here.

He started 30 games, came off the bench in 2 and was injured/suspended for 6. Yeah sounds like he can't nail down a spot in the team alright :houllier:

Yeah, I saw that. He's probably being lined up by PSG for next year. I wonder if Lyon could be tempted

This idea we are paying 70-80m for one player who has been underwhelming given his ability for a while is ridiculous imo. Unless the price is quite a bit lower than that this ain't happening.

He isn't a stater at his club and has been underwhelming since moving there, not to add that'd be a large chunk of our budget and we need to sign several positions this summer (with us seemingly not being interested in the free transfer opportunities)

Is he that good? Just screams the classic United disappointing signing. The only thing I like is that he has worked under ETH.

He is very good. Also he controls the concepts of the positional game, and would save a lot of time for ETH.

He had the 4th most minutes played, do Barcelona start most matches with only 3 players?

He's amazeballs. Would be our best central midfielder since prime Carrick, and, if he comes, I reckon he'll end up in the same tier as Charlton, Robson, Keane and Scholes as one of our best central midfielders ever by the end of his time here.

Reminds me of that summer when Moyes got dumped by Fabregas. Can we get players who actually want to play for the club for a change

Feels like both he and his former Ajax teammate De Ligt haven’t come close to living up to the hype since they moved. They were talked up as being the next big things and both have just been decent but nothing special.

Good to know. He is streaming on Twitch today, and he has mentioned something about an ultimatum that we sent to de Jong according to the other aggregators. Maybe he might have mentioned some other stuff that hasn't been picked up on yet.

Exactly. Plenty more fish in the sea, but we need to move on quickly. Too much to do, no time to waste.

Big star player, big fee, doesn't want to leave his club, big wages, probably doesn't want to come here, questions over if could he adapt to the league/Manchester?

This could be the type of signing we've been getting wrong for years now.

Finally, someone spoke the correct words.
For the last decade, we have been focused on Galactico players (big transfer fees, big wages) who don't necessarily want to join us.
Why then, having made those mistakes which have placed us in the worst position for over 30 years, are we following the same path again?

If De Jong is not desperate to join us, we need to look elsewhere.
In fact, if De Jong was offered to us for £10M I wouldn't take him.
The guy wants to stay Barca. Leave him be.

This guy summarised it nicely...

This is the player ETH wants if you believe the reports. Player already plays for Barca and is on decent salary. Plus its his dream club. So is it a surprise that we are trying to buy him and the player is bit hesitant in leaving his dream club? If we only sign player who dream of playing for us then its going to be a limited pool of players to choose from. Never understood this “feck him, lets buy players who wants to play for us”.

Again we are doing the same thing, go after a big name player by begging him to join. Why not go for a player who actually wants to play for us.

If he's staying in Barcelona, he'll do them more harm than good (and maybe they will be in Europa League next year and will regret this day).

Surely he can't be as inconsistent as Pogba is, if he can consistently produce 7-8-9 performance I think that would do.

We need midfielders that can actually take care of the ball, that can frequently choose the right pass and moves to make on or off the ball, this guy ticks a lot of boxes. Get him in ASAP

I know we aren't in champions League but ffs Barca didn't even qualify for knockouts this season. They ended up in Europa League and failed miserably in that too.

They are trying to offload him obviously, we seem to be the only club with interest. I thought Man City would go for him but reports say they aren't interested.

If he has such worry put a release clause in his contract that he can leave for X amount if we fail to qualify for CL again. I know its stupid but we get a quality player and our money back or something at end of the season.

I know he's a good player and I would have loved him but if he's messing us about in the hope PSG come over to offer him their annual CL disappointment, he can feck off.

He's not signning for Salford, he's signing for United ffs. They only place I can see him going that would work logically is Bayern and I do not see them being arsed.

What I heard said on the Spanish podcast I was listening to (not sure which it was, my step-son had it on) was that we’d agreed a fee, Frankie had initially said no, but Ten Hag had called him several times and now he was trying to make up his mind. United had issued an ultimatum because they didn’t want things to drag on, and the fact Barca had made clear to Frankie that they’d accept the offer if he agreed to go, might push it in our favour. It was only a short minute or so. Sounds pretty 50/50 to me.

Thanks. That may have come from Oriol Domenech, then, as that first part is basically what he said. Yeah, this is definitely a 50/50 situation rather than being as dead as it seems. If he rejects us here, then we're definitely going to move on. This doesn't seem like the Cesc Fabregas/Di Maria case that it's being made out to be.

Yeah I don’t think so either. I think that’s driven by (a) not having the ego of Woodward at the helm, and (b) ETH wanting players in before pre-season.

So who’s the alternative if we can’t get him or if he doesn’t wanna come? That bloke Savic from Lazio? Haven’t heard a midfielder’s name link to us yet besides Savic

Barca are asking way too much for him, but more importantly...he doesn't want to join us.

The only way we'll "force his hand" is if we overpay him massively, that can't end well. Just move on to another target, we're wasting time pursuing a player that has repeatedly said no.

I hope we would avoid this transfer.

Barca wants big money for him, and he doesn't wants to play for us.

We should move on and look around elsewhere, for cheaper options.

We only have 120m budget, and we need at least 4-5 new signings this summer. If we somehow manage to get unhappy De Jong, we will be left with little for rebuild.

Can someone point me to the source of all these claims that he doesnt want to come here?

And that's nót the same as him saying he is happy at barcelona and is looking forward to next season.

Tbh I'd be more wary if De Jong didn't have concerns about joining us. We're a shit show, out of CL, problems on and off the pitch. Any top player who would join us without hesitation would be very suspicious. We want players who are ambitious and have their head screwed on, and any ambitious player with their head screwed on would have serious doubts about joining us, need plenty of reassurances and proof that we are getting our shit together. That's the reality of the situation, we have to be convincing to get top players in. Top players won't be lining up waiting for our call like its 2002.
