My point is that there's more room for making mistakes with a financially dominant league whose got like 6-7 great games per season (including CL games) as opposed to a club whose not the financial top boy anymore and whose competing in an ultra competitive league were each result count. If lets say Bayern fecks up in 1-2 transfer windows then they would probably still win the Bundesliga. On the other hand if United does the same mistake then there's the risk of ending 7th place.

Bayern also have the luxury that they can almost cherry pick any player in their league. That's acts as a double wham as by doing so they strengthen their side with proven Bundesliga players while also weaken their direct rivals in a substantial way. Imagine if United are able to just go and pick Kane from Spurs, De Bruyne from City, Rice from West Ham + Van Dijk, Arnold Trent and Salah from Liverpool. We would probably win the EPL this year or the next.
Yes they do have domestic advantages but does their Champions League record and the fact that they can attract managers like Pep Guardiola not factor into your thinking at all?

The best squad I've ever seen in my life was Milan 1989 team. Their defence was stellar with Baresi, Maldini, Costacurta and Tassotti. They had the likes of Donadoni, Ancelotti, Rijkaard and Gullit in midfield and Van Basten upfront. Yet that side won just 2 CL in a row, they came third in the Serie A of the 88-89 and second place in the year after. Why would such a side struggle so much? That's because the Serie A was fiercely competitive with smaller sides being able to afford top top players. The margins of error were so small that teams with exceptional players would end up fighting for relegation or even get relegated. For example Inter ended 13th during the 93-94 season despite having players like Bergkamp, Zenga, Toto Schillaci and Bergomi in the squad. Fiorentina got relegated during the 92-93 season despite having players like Laudrup, Batistuta and Effenberg. I don't think that the EPL is as competitive as the Serie A at the time. However its the closest thing I've ever seen to it.

Having a less competitive league means that one have a lot of leeway in terms of resting players for the CL. It also means that one can get the foot off the pedal for 2-3 years (the so called transition period) as the club would still be able to win a trophy or two keeping fans happy. Not to forget that if things get really bad then Bayern can easily bankroll a rebuild, probably by poaching their rival's best players. I mean we're talking of hugely one sided league were Bayern had been winning the league since 2012. There's less pressure and more room of making mistakes there then let's say in the EPL were one slip too much might push United from a comfortable 2nd place to 6th.

We really can't compare ourselves to Bayern. They are in a different world to ours.

I apologise for taking your post seriously and answering it accordingly.
If everyone you interact with on here comes away from it feeling exasperated maybe it's time for some introspection.

or maybe I can switch my brains off and join the happy dovey brigade. Whose at the wheel at the moment? Ah yes, Jon Murtough....what a genius, United DNA, he knows what the club is all about and all of that.

Liverpool and Michael Edwards, easily destroys the posters argument when it comes to the EPL.
Edwards career didn't started at Liverpool. He had over 5 years experience as head of performance analysis with Portsmouth, then he moved to Spurs were he stayed in the job for two years, then he went up the ranks at Liverpool first as head of performance and analysis (nearly 2 years), director of technical performance (2yrs, 2 months), technical director (1 year 4 months) and sporting director, a role he held since 2016. He's more experience then Fletcher, Murtough and O'Boyle. Edwards had never faced demotions at Liverpool either.

Also note that since Edwards became sporting director in 2016 Liverpool won just 1 league title in 6 years

John Murtough was a performance analyst in his 20's, in 2002, under Walter Smith. He has even more experienced than Edwards who worked under Harry Redknapp.

I see this thread got filled with nonsense. First off by someone saying the previous highest point of his career was being Klopp's fitness coach and completely ignoring that he was actually in a senior position at the Premier League. Agenda will agenda.

He moved away from Klopp and Pool 5 years ago and its only since then that they've reached that ridiculous peak fitness that enables them to play rigorously for 60+ games a season. That alone makes me not that bothered about this guy's Liverpool connection.

Is he involved in selling and buying? Because the Henderson deal sounds awful from our point of view.

Controlling the narrative is half the battle sometimes. We don’t do this very well at all. Any positivity supporters had managed to conjure up for next season is slowly evaporating and this fella will carry a big chunk of the can.

Also authorised the doubling of Brunos wage! Different faces, same shit.
Give Murtough a chance. He's got great experience in assembling the female team, the U18 and some lovely Ikea furniture

I know this is sarcasm, but it triggered me a little as I kept seeing people blame Woodward for the Henderson deal! Like these new guts are immune to criticism.

I kinda agreed with Murtough move. To get rid off high paid - do nothing player seems like his starting "theme" so far. Nobody is going to buy Henderson (at decent price) by him sticking on the bench, at least not on that wage. So we loan him to showcase other team(s) of what Henderson is capable off.

It's a calculated gamble that Henderson will have a good season. We don't know if that 20m option also come with other "sides" either, for example a 10% of his next sale, etc.

Been lauded as the man to change our fortunes and is given credit already for doing absolutely nothing. I’m not holding my breath. He and Arnold were part of the Woodward era and I have seen nothing but same shit on the footballing side of things. First Bruno’s new deal on double wages now that awful Henderson loan deal.

Not to mention going into the transfer window unprepared once again and having the same shit start like before where going after a player who doesn’t want to join and meanwhile signing no one else because one transfer at a time. The clubs who mean business do not dither that much. See spurs and Conte for example. And this was was supposed to be the most important summer in a while. Yeah right. Already been named Don Murtough though.

New manager starting early, pre season starting in two weeks. So, needed to do the majority of work before that. Have feck ton to do and yet to sign a single player. Never proactive always reactive. But as usual people would be lapping and cheering even if we didn’t do our business and get just 1-2 players before the pre season. That’s all it takes.

I agree with this Murtough has only been in the role a short space of time and there's already evidence that exposes holes in his judgement. I've said this continually the fact the club are actively looking for a lesser DOF is a joke. If it's an Edwin from Ajax the sentiment is far more assured because of his experience.

How many times at this club will there be appointments where the individuals are having to figure things out. John / Arnold they make all the right noises but there's no substance thus far.

The funny thing is that Murtough was a Woodward's man. He came at United during moyes, he kept being promoted throughout this mess while others were sacked. Woodward even made him Matey Matt Judge's boss. Yet we are being lead to believe that Murtough's opinion meant nothing for Woodward

Keep a clean shit tomorrow, United is my final bus
Yeah it's not looking good.

Rangnick was the only guy that seemed to have a proper plan of identifying targets and working on deals early, something that, like he said, could get United back to the top in 2 or 3 transfer windows. The writing was on the wall when he was canned. We didn't even get to experience what we all thought Rangnick was actually brought in for and all the lessons it seemed he learnt regarding playing staff are being completely ignored. Why? Because it's cheaper and he didn't seem to rate certain players that you just know the club will protect to the very end

People turning on this bloke already?

By all accounts he's down some good work updating the non-playing staff over recent months.

Joel Glazer signs the cheques and Murtough will be doing well to get transfers across the line.

It’s started as expected. Facking crap. Club is in the worse position I can remember in my life time. Fans need to wake up to the mess and oust the Glazers and all staff associated to these parasites. Ripped apart a once power house in world football to the laughing stock of world football.

Not sure when he leaves, just that it's this summer.

Seen reliable reports saying that he is. Just not in his usual role as that wouldn't make sense.
Pretty sure Ducker or Ornstein said he wasn’t involved in transfers.

Think suggesting people are turning on him might be untrue, just that fans getting a little tired of being told to give the people in charge more time and heaping more blame on Woodward than necessary (he was awful, but at what point do we start holding the new guys accountable?).

As far as I'm concerned, not sure about others, but the board have been given enough leeway over the last decade and I'm fed up of being told to give more without question, negativity tends to come when the club I love has been pillaged by vultures and their cronies - at some point there needs to be results instead of words.

So let's wait and see.

By all accounts he’s not doing anything. Going by the evidence of no players coming in and complete ineptitude of our new set up doing feck all to make things easier for our new manager.

TBF I’m not loving my Manchester United life at the moment given their reluctance to elevate us on the football field because protecting assets and prioritising social media presence over recruiting the right players for the right system to make us successful on the football field is their MO.

Good observation

The job he's done/doing till now looks no better than his predecessor. Sacking Ragnik, all these loan deals, unable to sell players and not even a single signing till now makes it look like he's walking in thin ice. If he screws up this summer he'll have a tough time coming to OT. Fans will boo the feck out of him. Here's hoping he wakes up and does what's needed of him to bring us back competing with our rivals.
