Guys, stop quoting Laporta on Messi. When he said that, he actually believed Messi would stay because Tebas assured him Barca signing LaLigas cvc deal allows them to keep Messi. But then Florentino Perez called Laporta and reminded him cvc deal will be for 50 years and it prevents their superleague. So Laporta had to chose between 2-3 years Messi and a bad cvc deal, which also prevents the superleague for 50 years or release Messi. He chose the latter.

Right now it's a different story. Frenkie has his Bartomeu contract which guarantees him an absurd amount starting this season. Way above the new wage limit Laporta's board set. Barca doesn't want to sell Frenkie, but they also want to reduce their wage bill. So there is a possibility to sell Frenkie if he doesn't agree to the new wage limit. But if Frenkie loves it so much in barcelona and he agrees to do without Bartomeus promised money there will be no selling. In terms of liquidity, barca needs no money. They will activate the 2nd lever and sell the 15% tv money for round about €400m which will take the pressure of LaLiga's ffp.

In the end, it will depend only on Frenkie. The negotiations between those clubs take place in case Frenkie decides to leave. No one can force him.

tl;dr Messi didn't stay because financial issues.

Just like de Jong won't stay because of their financial issues.

I think Laporte is just making De Jong the villain as he needs to take a wage cut to stay for the love of Barcelona.

And you don't think they've explored that avenue before entering into negotiations with United?
You don't negotiate to sell a player before exhausting all options with the player themselves. There will be more too it than just the wages. They'll need to sell for more reasons that we likely don't know about. I'm pretty sure if he was desperate to stay he could have simply negated the pay rise and stayed on his old wages anyway.

We make a signing or 2, Ronaldo does a huge "U turn", and we romp into the season with the huge bonus that he's properly on board, and we have a magical season.

I can sees it now.
CR37 can go. Let him mess up Bayern Munich’s harmony. Nanglesmann will love him.

I simply don't buy it because if their intention was to keep him why have they allowed negotiations for 2 months then including AFTER having the economic levers approved? That would have been the perfect time to tell us to feck off if they knew they had actual financial security to keep him
It's not like Sancho at all because Dortmund outrightly refused to negotiate with us after the deadline. Barcelona have been negotiating with us for months. Simply makes zero sense to keep things going then make a complete 180 at an unusual time
Putting pressure on De Jong to drop his wages? Why would De Jong agree to this if there wasn’t a threat about a move?
Not saying any of this is true but this is the club who have threatened to bench players with 1 year left on contracts if they dont re-sign. They’re known to bluff

They also needed the money. Key word being needed. I still think we sign him anyway

This would make sense if they had any say in this. If FDJ says 'get fecked, neither signing elsewhere nor your reduced wages contract', how can they force the issue?

If he loves Barca as much as people are saying he does, they wouldn't need to pressure him. He'd just do it because he wants to stay.
The fact that Barca are negotiating his exit even though he said he wants to stay surely shows that they really don't want him there or don't value him as much as he'd want them too

Again they've had TWO MONTHS to do this and De Jong has publicly stated his intention to stay at Barcelona. If Barcelona were putting in the actual effort to keep him with FDJ's preference to stay the wage issue would have been sorted ages ago and FDJ would have flat out rejected us.

Barcelona have pulled the plug on this deal, rumour in Spain is he will take a huge pay cut like Pique!!

Its all today with Barca getting these levers 400 Million incoming which 200 will be set aside for transfers and pay FDJ what he’s owned.

Interesting Messi is getting mentioned again to return to the camp new

Jesus the games playing and bullshit, so tedious.
People wanna know why this is dragging, they put it on our board which ya they might not be the most efficient but the Barca board is playing a big part in this dragging.

But if they don’t try then that happens anyway?

Would Barca really hamstring themselves for a decade so they can keep FdJ (a player that Xavi doesn't even want anymore because of Pedri / Gavi?). We wouldn't have come this far if they actually wanted him regardless of the economic pain they'd have to go through. I'd say that level of treatment is reserved for the best of the best - Mbappe, Neymar, Messi etc. not a player where they have alternatives ready to step up.

The alternative is to sell FdJ and use that money to buy Lewa + Raphinha and not sell their TV revenues. The choice seems obvious to me atleast.

Maybe there's something else going on, who knows.

Again, if true we'd have briefed the media and i'm pretty damn certain we'd hear how annoyed ETH is about it too.
You don't spend 2 months negotiating to pull the plug for no reason.

If he was willing to take a huge pay cut, then they wouldn't have bothered trying to sell him. They knew they had their economic levers in place for quick cash injection which would buy them time and allow them to keep their players, yet they still entered into negotiations, agreed a fee etc..

This transfer saga is getting really tedious.

My guess? In the end De Jong won't join us.

But Señor Levers said they don't want to :(
Part of me wishes they actually sell off all of their TV rights for the next decade and go into a decline as a result. fecking holier than thou assholes.

This is just to create narrative that Barca didnt want to sell but player reluctance to accept half the salary contract and wage bill forced them to sell to United and they got a great deal. Every Barcelona media account will run this narrative. Spanish clubs are master in doing this
