26 years worth of debt!
It's full on muppet meltdown in here. You all need to chill and be less stressed.
I would like to see some of the CAF buy a car at a showroom.

Half would walk away immediately as the coffee was stale, while the other half would be sweating bullets and pay 20k above MSRP for a 10 year old Camry.

I wouldnt blame the club at all if this doesnt go through.. I still think the Chelsea link is being brought up to try and get us to pay Barca more (to cover their payment to FDJ)..

But if this falls through, I am fine.. We have bent over and overpaid clubs and players for way too long.. cant do that anymore. And seriously.. ETH might want him, but he is hardly the greatest CM in the world..

Set aside the money, focus on other signings.. see what happens and look for a backup option.. I'd be totally fine with that.
100%

I just hope we have a backup target lined up. Our build up play hurts so much because of the lack of an actual playmaker. And there are a precious few floating about.

The later it gets in the transfer window, the harder / more expensive it becomes to get clubs to sell their best players.

If Chelsea get him, it’ll be very likely because they will pay all of Frenkie’s outstanding wages for Barca. Not because we are incompetent in this transfer. Would you like United to do that?
They say never pay never but the only legitimate way Chelsea could compensate him would be either by a bigger weekly pay or a bigger signing on fee
Barca are wheeling and dealing in a way that Del Boy would be proud of at some point it’s all going to implode. They seem to want everyone for free or a bargain and want any player leaving to go not just for top dollar but then some.
I just can’t see how the numbers come close to feasible nor do I think any of the clubs who are being “ played “ by Barca should play ball with them.

We all love United
To summarise what the Athletic lads have said today:

- No mention of Chelsea’s involvement.
- United and Barcelona have met multiple times about the sale of De Jong. United made two bids, one was accepted.
- the player would prefer to stay at Barcelona, however he’s aware Barca have accepted a bid for him and he’s told them that he’ll leave if they pay up the deferred wages they owe him. Barcelona have said that’s Uniteds problem if they want you, United have said that’s Barcelona’s problem, they’re the ones that haven’t paid you.
- Ten Hag has spoken to De Jong
- De Jong will most likely go on tour with Barcelona next week.
- This will most likely roll on until the end of the window unless Barcelona force the issue and tell him he has to go so they can free up wages, register new players they’ve just signed and pay him what they owe him.
- also, don’t pay attention to MARCA, they’re stirring the pot to wind Barca up.
The third point. What an absolutely ugly and despicable club

I really hope as a club we've moved on from this transfer.
It's clear as fecking day it's not happening. Has been for weeks.
His club don't want it.
The player appears not to want it.
Way too complicated.

It's like the ugly bloke hoping the hot girl will somehow go home with him when the club closes..... but she leaves without even acknowledgement of his interest....

Move on. Stick a pin in it.
Must've been many a painful nights on the club scene. I feel for u bro

Martinez/Fred/Fernandes as a 3 looks pretty handy already to be honest. From the videos I've seen he'd be a perfect CDM that will help our build up play already. (I know he's a cb)

This all seems the most likely to be the reality of the situation. Probably still enough to give people a meltdown though. Barca are making this hell for everyone.

You would think something significant has happened when you see 8 pages movement in this thread and not because of some sissy's throwing tantrums about obvious negotiation tactic.

I am not the most optimistic about this signing mainly because of the constant De Jong prefers to stay at Barca story that keeps being pushed out and De Jong himself obviously stating that but anyone worrying about this very obvious ploy by Barca probably shouldn't really follow any transfer windows from now on.

Hate to say this but players actually wants to come to city.

Us? Not so much

Free agents that do wants to come may not be good enough. Those that are good enough would want astronomical wages, and probably guaranteed game time instead of being plan C for FDJ.

And FDJ might not actually wants to come at all cost.
Now they do, mostly because of Guardiola and money. But when those project just started, neither Klopp nor Pep went for top world class talent. You look at Pep’s first few windows and he was buying good players, but always targeting 2nd tier clubs.

Surely Barca won't let it drag on until the end of the window, they need the money and to free up wages to sign/register players

Thanks, great summary and matches my understanding as well. I've been saying this for a while but letting this drag on and making other signings (martinez, antony) is the smart but risky negotiating tactic. Our fans will be happy, Barca fans will start putting pressure on the board to make more signings. Barca can't actually register players with La Liga etc.

Pros:
We get FdJ at a cut price and can make other signings (say CF)

Cons:
Someone else might swoop in (say Chelsea) and pay up. We're not the most attractive target right now.
Our backup targets will end up being more expensive if we have to panic buy.

A negative tweet or two and half the Caf loses their shite and lap it up :houllier:
I think the fact that Romero has tweeted about Chelsea interest is a valid concern. Doesn't mean he will definitely go there but we really should have this deal wrapped up by now.
Will be a feck up of mammoth proportions if we don't get De Jong now. Murtough would have suffered a humiliating failure in his first window. Plus Ten Hag would feel let down in a big way.

Why? They’ve signed players they just can’t register them. As long as De Jong goes by the last second then it’s all the same to them.

So we have spent all summer chasing a player who made it clear he didn't want to play for us and now get to watch him go to Chelsea instead.

Why was this so predictable?

To be fair, you'd absolutely love him to go to Chelsea, imagine having more reasons to be angry at the club

How can Barca expect United to pay De Jong's deferred wages? What a shitshow of a club.

I don’t think Barca will be interested in any of their players. They are having real trouble registering their own signings and targets
Actually they've already signed Christensen, plus Alonso and Azpilicueta were supposed to follow him shortly. It's not really a secret, Barca were negotiating with both players since before the end of last season.

If you want to pay them the money they want, his deferred wages and give them two players good luck to you.

Hope United have nothing more to do with it.

In all honesty, these lot don't tend to need things that have actually happened to get angry about; scenarios that they merely think might happen tend to be more than enough!

I don't believe Chelsea interest is real, it's probably Laporta trying to pressure United into shelling out more money.

It's ridiculous that there's a big possibility we're going into the new season with worse midfield options than we've had the last 3 seasons.

You don't think they would want their new signings to play the first few games?
In a perfect world yes but if we still hadn’t signed De Jong by the deadline for the Brighton game I don’t think we would rush out and spend the 20m deferred wage difference to do so?
It’s the same situation only reversed imo. The pressure will ramp up for both sides but it would lessen for Barca if Chelsea were waiting for the move to break down.

Why does people here thinks that Barca will somehow make things easy for Chelsea if they want to sign FDJ? They will still want Chelsea to pay for the deferred wages and demand a lot of money to not make a loss from this. Unless Chelsea came in with a significantly higher bid (a bid that will at least cover the 17m they owe FDJ) than ours, there is no way they will be able to sign FDJ quickly.

Barca had proven that they are scums with no regard for ethics. Negotiation with these kind of people is the hardest and they do not care if FDJ prefers Chelsea more than us. And this is assuming that the interest from Chelsea is genuine, not another tactic from the scums.

I think it’s likely but if you do decide to enter a bidding battle I do hope we pull out of it. Barca are trying to grab what they can and more.

Exactly this. I just don't know why people are angry at the club. We just cannot pay whatever they ask. If it takes patience, then be it. If Chelsea are interested and if he wants to go there, so be it. That's how transfers work.

I'm quite sure we have a backup and we will sign a midfielder before end of August. All we can do is relax and be patient.

Frenkie isn’t coming. Not going to happen fellas. He wants CL football and he wants to get paid. He achieves that by staying at Barca.

‘What we should do:
- Tell Barca we’ve made our offer, it won’t change. If they want to drown in their own financial quagmire, that’s on them.
- complete the deal for Martinez
- Inquire on Tielemans. If he’s available for 40m, he’s a decent stopgap.
- If ETH doesn’t fancy any other players in FDJ’s place, save our money.
- Look to January window, or, better yet, wait and come in for a huge deal for Bellingham in summer of 2023.

Hopefully ETH can patch something together in The midfield with the combination of McFred, DVB, Garner and Mejbri and we can pip top 4, putting us back in the game.

God knows what to believe, but you'd have expected the links to other clubs to be fabricated sooner by Barcelona if so. Apparently we've agreed a fee, why introduce that now? I guess they could be trying to get us back to the table to cover FdJ deferred wages?

Honestly, wish we'd just gone in for Tielemens/Bissouma or some combination of sorts rather than wait around all summer for this to maybe materialise.
