No, I'm outlining the very grey area that's been a problem in Afghanistan since day 1 of enemy fighters hiding their weapons as soon as they see a soldier, only to pick it back up again once they leave.
And you saying it's ok to kill unarmed people based on that right? Which means they can justify killing anyone unarmed citing the possibility of them taking up arms in future?

Constantly at the STD clinic.
A lot of what happened in Afghanistan was way worse than Ukraine but because the civilian population there also wears turbans, old clothes and have big beards it just felt more normal.

Children were killed, schools were bombed, villages were wrecked.

The Overseas Operations (Service Personnel and Veterans) Act was passed into legislation in April 2021.

The act includes a:
  • statutory presumption against prosecution of current or former personnel for alleged offences committed in the course of duty more than five years ago
  • requirement that any prosecution brought more than five years after the event must have the attorney general’s consent to proceed
  • ‘longstop’ to prevent claimants bringing human rights or civil litigation claims for personal injury or death more than six years after the event
The act only applies to allegations and claims relating to military operations outside the UK.

The government has previously consulted on these and other related issues through the Ministry of Defence (MoD) consultations on:

Interesting and disgraceful.

Exactly. The pressure the special forces are put under is insane and Afghanistan and Iraq increased the tempo well beyond what it should have been. It's driven higher PTSD rates and pushed soldiers to breakdown, and then they get judged by people sitting safely behind their desks at home.
Yes, the soldiers killing unarmed men, thousands of miles from home, are the real victims here.

Its a choice between committing war crimes or letting the guy go who will try and kill you tomorrow night. It's not as black and white as you think it is.

And yet when locals react to try and suck the soliders who killed their loved ones they are labeled as terrorists and "insurgents".

Children were killed, schools were bombed, villages were wrecked.
And statistic for killings were massively fudged.

If a group of 20 people were killed which included for example 7 men, 7 women and 6 children the reports would always claim only 13 civilian casualties.

Male casualties were always assumed to be combatants, regardless of their affiliation.

On some occasions 14+ make with a gun was considered a combatant. Young men and kids carrying guns are a common sight in Afghanistan pro or against Taliban.

The whole invasion was a massive mess. When the official stance was to keep quiet about the pedophiles U.S allied with what can you expect.

It's not a shocker that when you train men to be arguably the world's most efficient killers, a few of them might become a bit unhinged in the process. They're going into the highest risk places to get the most dangerous people. They're not going to hesitate if there's the slightest doubt about somebody and they will inevitably get a few wrong.

Its not right but I don't think it's possible to put people like that in an environment like that and not have accidents. Blame the people who sent them there.
That's what some American police say when questioned on why they killed people on routine traffic check.

But be sure to say "thank you for your service" whenever they say they are in the army.

How exactly do you know this?
Need I send you the video of Russian forces hanging a Syrian guy by his legs before chopping him up bit by bit while he's still alive?

Any story regarding US/UK forces of not following rules of engagement or mistreating prisoners is big news. If there's evidence, they are tried and convicted. Of course things do happen and covered up, but those involved take a huge risk in doing so every time. In Russia... whole different story, from what we've seen everything points to it being encouraged from the top.

SOF guys certainly seem to have a disregard for human life, that's for sure. Listen to any of them that share their stories, they don't take chances, they are trained to kill and survive foremost. If they go in somewhere, unless capture is mission critical, then well... these guys tend to be sent places for a reason.

The likes of kelvin mckenzie and the right wing twitter mob are going to town on the BBC as being traitors. Its pathetic and downright frightening how jingoism has become so much more acute nowadays. Its a 'war' and anything goes seems to be the mantra.

They were killing civilians not just combatants who they detained.

Do you share the same “not their fault” attitude to Russian soldiers that murder Ukrainian civilians?

It's OK, the British government will just create a law and give them all amnesty from prosecution just like they're doing for the troubles.

@Red Rash

We were NOT doing "the same as the Russians" in Afghanistan. And let's not forget the Russians were there too -(presumably committing many unaccounted for crimes!) and have been there many times in the past.
Lots of stories of Iraqis and Afghan civilians being murdered, women being raped, families being forced to sexually assault each other. Some made the news and led to convictions but the vast majority did not.

If anything the pattern is when something comes out try and cover it up and only prosecute when it’s the very last option.

Muhamdiyah Murders & Rape:
Bringers of democracy and freedom, the good guys. Gang rape a 14 year old who they’d been eyeing up. They then proceed to murder her and her entire family. Set her on fire and tried to blame “terrorist” you know the ones who were simply fighting to protect their country from invasion and occupation… sounds similar to the Ukrainians we all praise but in 2003 to FEB 2022 anyone who resisted invasion and occupation was called a terrorist, regardless of the actual facts and their motivation.

I digress, anyways, the US army covered it up. When the locals sought justice they didn’t receive it. They then targeted the battalion that they knew the perps came from.. this incident actually got reported in the news as “look at the barbaric Iraqis attacking our troops” then, and only then.. to avoid a full escalation eg more people from around Iraq going there did the US admit what happened & start proceedings.

US Kill Squad Afghanistan:

Spiegel newspaper came across photos of US soldiers murdering Afghan civilians and posing with their dead mutilated bodies. Instead of welcoming the evidence, the USA initially tried to put an injunction on the paper and pressured them at the highest level to stay quiet.

SAS killing in Afghanistan:
As we see initial instinct is to cover up.

And this pattern of every war crime that gets prosecuted initially being a cover up goes back decades. Yet people don’t realise convictions are only the tip of the iceberg.

My Lai (Vietnam)
Around 500 civilians, men women and children murdered.

The US aircraft pilot that saw what was happening and stopped it went home a hero? Noooooooo, he went home and was hated for 30 years.

Countless more. On YouTube there used to be quite a few videos of random war crimes, none reported or prosecuted, by US soldiers. Two that always stuck out was the one from the roof top where they just started firing heavily machine gun fire at a road and laughing at blowing a random man’s head off. And another where they are driving in a convoy and one in a tank or armoured vehicle ahead swerves onto the pavement to run over a lady. The people in the army truck behind laugh and say “ x amount today, still not top of the scoreboard “

So don’t fool yourself. We are doing just as much and even worse than the Russians when you consider the how long and the 25000 civilians killed by airstrikes across 6 countries over the past 10 years.

Agreed. The cognitive dissonance here is shocking.

And you just know there will be no justice.

The article says detainees and unarmed. It's cold blooded murder not an accident.

They've often been one and the same in this war.

Ukraine is different because the soldiers wear uniforms.

They are blonde, have blue eyes and are christian.
While a lot of journalists have outted themselves by pretty much saying that outright… let’s give @11101 a chance to show that, maybe, he’s just the victim of media propaganda.

Based on his own rational he should now shift his tone and also justify/understand Russian war crimes against Ukrainians… or he rethinks his rational and condemns all war crimes regardless of who is doing it and to whom it’s being done. Won’t be holding my breath thou.

The Tory Party passed an Act of Parliament last year stating that any 'issue' over five years ago cannot be prosecuted without the agreement of the Attorney-General.
Thanks.

Disgraceful.

Shock! Soldiers kill civilians during a war.
By now we should know better and understand that it's part and parcel of every war.

At the end, I can not even blame the soldiers. They are put in a terrible situation, these are long missions in destabilized countries. In some way it's the situation, the environment and the nature of the conflict that contribute to creating such incidents.

We as a public should be fully aware that this is what happens when you send soldiers to a war.

"But let this fact burn its way into your brain to save you from hell and rouse you for the revolution—this fact:
Nowhere on all that battlefield among the shattered rifles and wrecked canon, among the broken ambulances and splintered ammunition wagons, nowhere in the mire and mush of blood and sand, nowhere among the bulging and befouling carcasses of dead horses and swelling corpses of dead men and boys—nowhere could be found the torn, bloated and fly-blown carcasses of bankers, bishops, politicians, "brainy capitalists" and other elegant and eminent "very best people."
Well, hardly.
Naturally—these proud, cunning and intelligent people were not there, on the firing line.
Listen, oh, listen—you betrayed multitude of toil-damned, war-blasted workers of all nations:
If the masters want blood, let them cut their own throats.
We don't want other people's blood and we refuse to wast our own.
Let those who want "great victories" go to the firing line and get them.
If war is good enough to vote or to pray for, it is good enough to go to—up close where bayonets gleam, swords flash, canon roar, rifles clash, flesh rips, blood spurts, bones snap, brains are dashed,—up close where men toil, sweat, freeze, starve, kill, groan, scream, pray, laugh, howl, curse, go mad and die,—up close where the flesh and blood of betrayed men and boys are pounded into a red mush of mud by shrieking canon balls, by the iron-shod hoofs of galloping horses and the steel-bound wheels of rushing gun-trucks.
"What is war?"
They say "War is Hell."
Well, then, let those who want hell, go to hell. "

I already told you. They are giving them uniforms. And the small fact it's a totally different war.
The Taliban has uniform too. It's only different because westen white man has invaded a non white Muslim country.
The Russians massacring the Ukrainians and the Anglo Saxons massacring the Afghanis are no different.

There are photos of civilians in civilian clothing making Molotov cocktails, there are photos of civilians in civilian clothing being giving riffles (no uniforms in site)

In March Zelenskyy passed a law allowing civilians to use guns to defend the country.

You haven’t really thought this out have you. Of course normal Ukrainians will fight back, it’s their country that has been attacked. Same thing happened I’m Iraq, same thing would happen anywhere.

We have similar accusations in the spotlight here. We are waiting for a verdict in a huge defamation case where a VC winner is suing various press for claiming he committed murder and war crimes. From the outside the evidence seems damming but we will see I guess.

We had a big scandal in the 1990s in Canada that led to the disbanding of our most "elite" regiment and a sharp decrease in moral and financial support for our military.
