He’s not enough by himself. For what it’s worth I think De Jong will happen but Neves would be a smart backup at the right price. As I said he’s levels and levels above our current options.
Then you haven't seen the prices quoted. He would not come here as a backup mate.

Where is your faith in EtH?

You don’t think that Eriksen and Martinez will help us in our possession game? It’s not about waiting for the “perfect” player but to have patience to wait for the “right” player, someone who fits into EtH plans. No more panic buys if you ask me. From what I see so far we have improved immensely since last season. I prefer to trust our manager until results proves me otherwise.
It's not about trusting the manager, he has my full backing. How can you say we look better after two preseason games. That's a complete heads gone if you ask me.

The two players you mention will help us yes but neither is a guaranteed starter if reports are to be relieved and with one (or both) of Fred or Mctominay in the middle of the part we will always struggle to retain the ball against decent sides. We have the worst midfield in the top 10 of the league.

I have and I’m not sure I believe them. He doesn’t have that long on his current deal. I think they’d be tempted to cash in at £40-50 million. He wouldn’t come as a backup because he would instantly be our best midfielder.

we could all look like prats and we walk away next week....but lets be honest. We aren't walking away. The only "Tier 1-2" update on FDJ was that we've pushed the window out to essentially deadline day and Ducker reconfirmed in a second article that FDJ/his camp want the negotiations to continue.

That's it in terms of recent credible reporting.

30 million wasted. In a few years he'll be one of them players who doesn't play anymore and we can't shift.
In a few years, he’ll be only in his late 20s. I’m sure we can shift him to teams of Leicester or Everton level again. He’s a full Belgian international and quite a big name to be honest. All these is hypothetical though yeah

He's not better than Eriksen and you said he'd be a good cheap backup. He wouldn't be either of those things.

Trouble with Umtiti is nobody wants him as his injury record is atrocious. Not sure people would want Auba for the money he earns and the attitude. That leaves Memphis.
I'm sure some clubs will sign those players. I could see them even moving to the Middle East or USA as well. Barca might not get the transferfees that they were hoping for, but if it's about getting their wages out of the way, this could be an acceptable plan B. The difficulties surrounding it and especially since they probably would want to keep Auba to have more depth in their options, is a reason why this would possibly be plan B and not plan A. Plan B is less convenient, doesn't mean it's impossible or not a solution.

In my eyes if we sign Tielemans or Neves we are panic buying as our main target is gone.

We know he isn't bang average
I rate him highly and I think he is top midfielder, but things sometimes don’t work the way you expect them to do. After no pre season, new league, new teammates, more pressure after a negative media coverage about how he wants to stay, things can go very wrong. It should be done before the season starts or we bring in an alternative.

They are also very different types of player that play in different roles.

I'd rather give Garner a chance than sign Neves.
Which would be a massive mistake. Neves is really underrated, Garner is nowhere near ready. For what it’s worth McTomiany and Neves would literally play the exact same position in our team.

I think we will get Frenkie in the end. A fee being agreed suggests both clubs align on the sale. But reliable journos like Ornstein and Whitwell had stated a while back that this saga could extend into August. Plus given the fact that he's gone on tour suggests to me we won't sign him until August at the earliest.

Might be good to stop posting every little snippet on this thread so people can collectively stop losing their sh*t. Would be good to wait for a Ornstein/Whitwell update.

He's also coming into a system ready-made for him, with a manager that knows him and knows how to get the best out of him.

He's having a pre-season, just not with us

Are Neves/Tielemans better than Eriksen? People are forgetting Eriksen played in a much deeper role for Brentford, arguably the same role as both players mentioned. I'd rather use Eriksen there than splashing at least 30 million on Tielemans, much more on Neves.
No, they're both comfortably worse at all things Eriksen's good at. (passing, vision, close control, free kicks, finding space, etc).

Tielemans is a poor man's Pogba (slower and worse at carrying the ball forward) and Neves is a decent player, but not worth more than 30-40 mil. (Supposedly Leicester want 60-70 mil for him).

Does it mean, if De Jong doesn't come to United, the club will fold?

There's life before FDJ and there will be life after FDJ.

Let the club do what's is appropriate, the club is at a point of knowledge, to know if there is a chance to get him or not, if we can't get him let us move on and continue rebuilding our own team.

If God forbid FDJ is no more today, do you mean United is finished or Ten Hag resigns tomorrow, the club and fans need to chill out abit.

It's just another player being employed by United not like Glazer selling the club, which can determine alot of fate of the club.

If he comes he comes, if not we soldier on. But the club should use info at it's disposal to make the right judgement and decision.

I like Neves as a player and certainly don't overrate him (I actually fully expected us to sign him before the Frenkie rumors surfaced in May) but he's a playmaker type and has a lot more similarities to Eriksen than McTominay. They wouldn't play the same position they would be an okay pairing as the double-pivot. Just a bit average.

Call me crazy but I think the backup player for Frenkie is Eriksen, I also think this is why we are so relaxed in terms of not really pushing other targets.

I'm not calling them similar players but Eriksen can absolutely play the role of the creative man in the double-pivot.

Personally I think Neves is Carrick like DM. Good at distributing the ball, good at reading the game. Teilemans is closer to the Erikson style player I reckon. Neves is an unspectacular player just like Carrick was and so just like Carrick I think he gets underrated. Been playing in a criminally defensive wolves team for years too. I’d love him here, even alongside De Jong.

A system he had not played for a couple of years.

And do you think pre season is just for fitness purposes? Otherwise why is it relevant that he has a pre season somewhere else?

I don't think we'll be getting any news for the next couple of days to be fair, but we never know.

I'm guessing that things could change in an instant if Barca suddenly blink and say heres the money, get out.

I would rather sign nobody at this point if we don't get Frenkie. Neves/Tielemans would only improve us short term IMO. De Jong stays in the team for 5+ years.

And he could stink the place out like Pogba and Di Maria or have injury problems like Varane, their are no guarantees in football, Barca fans are split on FDJ, some love him, some think he should be doing more for the obscene wages he was suppose to be paid, and that’s the issue, he loves Barcelona unconditionally, the fans, club and manager do not share that same unconditional love, he’s not xavi, Messi, Busquets and this is the reason why he can’t play his favourite position. Barcelona have Pedri, F Kessie, Pjanic, Gavi, Garcia, Busquets already without FDJ which is 6 players for 3 spaces just like they now have R Lewandowski, P Aubameyang, F Tores, O Dembele, A Fati, Raphina. They have 6 players for 3 spaces and M Depay and M Braithwaite are also surplus to requirements.

The reason why Barcelona have mortgaged the clubs future and are trying to do so much within the transfer market is because like United, they had a terrible season, the club won 28 Out of 54 games, recording
14 defeats and 12 draws, they came second in La liga but at one stage we’re mid table, got knocked out of the CL at group stage, then got knocked out of the Europa League very early when they were red hot favourites. They intend to bring in at least 8 or 9 players and phase out 7 or 8 to become relevant again on the pitch so they can generate more money off the pitch. It makes sense for players who were bought by previous managers and cost a fortune who are on high wages be the first to go especially if they were part of a team under R Koeman that lost and drew so many games. A President like La Porta who is a nasty piece of work has at least one admirable quality, he will do whatever it takes to elevate his club and make the Catalonian club win again. He will not tolerate a win rate of less than 60/65% which is why the sacked the last two managers and brought Xavi in, Xavi May like FFJ but he didn’t buy him.

I don't understand where this consensus has come from that United can go into a season relying on Fred / Mctomminay as core midfield players. If that is the expectation finishing 6-8th is almost a guarantee. Neither are technical enough to play the way ETH would envision with possession being a vital importance in the midfield.

Tielemans / Neves are miles above them in almost every technical department with the exception being mobility. If the FDJ deal collapses the club should reinforce with other targets to ensure that top 4 is achieved this season to get Bellingham next summer.

The issue would be chasing De Jong in a future window. He holds all the cards over Barcelona. If his wages are really an issue his agent should change the conversation to a legal one because he's an employee. They just don't seem to be very concerned about his issue at the club that's how it looks from the outside.

No, and I don't recall stating otherwise mate. I'm aware of how important pre-season is.

I don’t get it. He’s already at the club and already has a contract. Why does he need to accept any reductions to stay?
The President La Porta has said he can stay but not on the current contracted wages of rumoured €22M per season. La Liga sanctioned Barcelona last year and they now have to fall in line with their wage to revenue ratio being less than 70% which of course it was not, hence the debt. The club was basically over trading with players like Messi, Suarez, Griezmann etc all contributing to their wage bill being unsustainable so controls were put in place and now for Barcelona to sign and register new players, the whole salary of the teams comes into consideration. Barcelona need to get I’m guessing FDJ, G Piquet, M Depay and a few others off the wage bill to register players like F Kessie, Christensen, Raphina however it is important to note that a lot of these players due to their love for Barcelona are taking much lower wages than they could get at other teams right now and this is what La Porta is trying use in forcing FDJ to reduce his wages if he truly wants to stay.

Totally agree he’s far more mobile and has a huge upward curve given the chance.

So it’s a relevant concern that he along with Martinez and Eriksen missing out?
To an extent. It's not the end of the world. Many transfers are done after pre-season.

It should be easier for him to slot in than most normal transfers as it's a system almost tailor-made for him as I said. He might take some time to get on his teammates wavelength but he's an intelligent player, I'm sure it won't take that long.

IF we don’t sign FDJ then it’s not the end of the world.
at the end of the day it’s about improving how we play. Kids might play the system as well as done half arsed plan B

Our midfield problems are still quite evident even on holiday playing for fun. The fact that Fred gets into the first eleven as an automatic choice must surely conjure up visions of the dearth of talent. I don't think FDJ is an answer to our dilemma but maybe he and Martinez could swing things in our favour. I have to say that I'm reasonably impressed with Ten Haag's approach and no nonsense commentaries so I hope we see a big improvement this season. He will need time to produce anything like our successful teams of the previous decades.
If we start the season with Mc/Fred we will surely fail again. The other note is that they have scored 25% of our current goal tally on tour. :wenger:
Oh what tangled webs we weave.

I agree personally. I'd like us to become that club again that. really gives youth a proper chance. That's one of the things I'm really hoping for from ETH, to see how well he develops the young players.

Zidane and Savage have really looked good and stood out in the first two games for me. Hope they continue to develop and when the time comes get a chance.
