Yes, he's a short son of a bitch. His daddy was a short son of a bitch. His mother was shorter than him, and his brother, his brother was so short they couldn't even see him.

His sister is a giant though. Funny how that works.

Welcome Lisandro!

And what's all this mess in here about height? If I'm not misremembering Franco Baresi was around 5ft 9inches? (not that he's anything like Baresi!):D

As long as he has a brain that works, that's better than any 'height' concerns.

Look at the tall defenders we currently have who can't read the game to save their lives?

Anyway, wish him all the best.

I'm hoping that we have "overpaid" for Martinez as part of a deal to get Anthony too. I heard Anthony has a big sell on clause so it would be in Ajax interest to reduce the fee on Anthony and add some onto Martinez.

The fact the negotiations and price seemed to stall and then increase was maybe us agreeing a "bundle" price for the pair and structuring it in a way to maximise profit for Ajax.

Ajax buying some support for the right wing makes me hope that's the case.
I was just going to post about this. I certainly hope so.

Wow. Turned out even more expensive than I imagined.

I guess this is the problem with the manager directed approach. There is probably a list but it's not extensive and it's abundantly clear what the manager wants - players he knows. It doesn't leave the club much room to navigate this market and Ajax have really taken advantage of that.
I doubt Ole was champing at the bit to sign Donny, yet nice friendly Edwin still managed to weasel over £35m off us

That is an absolutely incredible fee for a defender from the Dutch league, who isn’t even a regular starter for his national team & has huge question marks over his suitability for PL football.

I desperately hope he proves the doubts completely wrong & goes on to be a wonderful signing and doesn’t instead become Erik’s version of Wan Bissaka/Maguire. He’s taking a big risk here, let’s just hope it pays off.

That’s actually not what he said
I think your twisting words to fit your narrative here, when did he say that?
He didn't say that of course, I was parodying Van Gaal's comments regarding his similar predicament with Rooney. Ten Hag did say that Maguire was going to be Captain and lauded him as an important player that's "achieved many things", so my guess is he intends for him to be one of his starting CBs.

Quite alot of money, has to be said, but happy the 3rd signing is confirmed.

He’s a player ETH wanted, so I guess it was worth paying an extra 10m or so.

Now onto the 4th.

57m! Seems very pricey.

But then again, getting Eriksen for free is amazing business.
I was thinking the free transfer negates the higher fee pushed elsewhere to get it over the line

It does seem like we've had a free signing nearly every year with zlatan, Sanchez (though a swap), grant, Heaton?, Cavani and now eriksen

Getting a few gone like Mata, matic, pogba, lingard frees up wages and Pereira sold was a bonus too

I think it's important to take those quotes in the context of the heavy criticism Maguire has received recently, up to and including an actual bomb threat, which led to these questions around captaincy in the first place.

Whether ETH favours Maguire or not, I wouldn't expect anything other than unqualified public praise. And if Maguire isn't starting I'd still expect that to continue with praise for his great influence in the dressing room, references to it being a squad game, the intensity of fixtures meaning everyone will play a lot, etc.

To be fair, our net spend so far is only this. Pereira + Henderson loan fee probably offsets Malacia money.
And the Malacia + Martinez signings also increase the probability of players like Telles, Williams, Bailly, Jones and Tuanzebe leaving as well. If we shift some of them then we'll have improved the team/squad relatively efficiently.
