Team against bus parkers
De Gea
Dalot Varane Martinez Shaw
Frenkie/Donny Fred
Sancho Eriksen Bruno
Martial

Bruno would be better than Rashford out left against the bus parkers. Frenkie or Donny to sit in front of the centre halves to cover the counter.

Team against press
De Gea
Dalot Varane Martinez Shaw
Frenkie/Donny Eriksen
Sancho Bruno Rashford
Martial

Rashford to provide the pace if we beat the press. Frenkie/Donny and Eriksen to be the ultimate in press resistance.

I know someone is going to find this dubious for various reasons. I don’t think Ten Hag dislikes Fred or McTominay, actually, but I think he intends to play Eriksen and Bruno both, and Martinez might give them better protection than either of McFred, as he is more defensively disciplined and reads defensive situations better. There is a question of his stamina in a CM spot, but both Bruno and Eriksen has great stamina. What they lack is defensive positional discipline and defensive duel power 1-1. Martinez has that. Bit speculative, but what the hey.

Martial and Rashford are two conundrums, but at their previous best level, there would be no question. So I’m a bit hopeful that a full preseason under Ten Hag might be what both need to get back to that level - even if their problems are very different from each other.
It'll be interesting to see where the gaffer wants to play Lisandro alright.

Funny how some people prefer to start Martial up front, when he has grand total of 2 goals in 23 games last season.

I like all the optimistic here.

Something like that, probably. It still needs 3 or 4 more signings, including De Jong, but it's starting to take shape a little bit.

Ronaldo can suffer for his disloyalty. He can work to get back in if he wants.

De Jong for McTominay if he signs. I don't know enough about Malacia or Martinez to know if they will displace Shaw and Maguire. Eriksen seems like he would be best in Bruno's position.

I know Dalot is favoured over AWB but I still don't think he is actually as good.

I don't know if this would work to be honest but I guess I like the sound of it I suppose.

Ronaldo would probably be off and has soured the good will he had among the fans and I don't have any idea if Martinez is actually good enough to replace Maguire but I just want to see the fecker out of the team( I actually defended him a lot back in the day but he has the mentality of a Pigeon).

Other problems would include Varane's lack of fitness and the lack of pace and width provided in our wings with Eriksen and Sancho in there which i know would be less of a concern when we shift from a counter attacking to a more possession based style but still, pool and city seem to have done well with speedy wingers.

I think we're still not finished in the market so for example de jong would walk right in there so let's see what happens.

Like this line up. Martinez plays on the left side, which is why ETH played Maguire on the right against Melbourne. Martial, Sancho and Rashford have been rejuvenated. Why play someone who has stated he wants to leave?

Until we get a holding midfielder and an indication that ronaldo is actually going to turn up for training I think that might be our best line up... and I'm a little underwhelmed

Dalot is absolutely rubbish; not putting him in any team. AWB is a void. Would rather Laird there than either. I hope we're in for a RB.

Maguire isn't going anywhere after being named captain.

Varane is so injury prone that i’m not sure it’s worth building a partnership with Martinez just for Varane to get injured again. I think we will try and see if the Maguire/Martinez partnership can work, otherwise Varane is in.

Shaw will also get injured and then Malacia will take over. I just don’t think Shaw will go through a whole season without getting injured at some point.

McFred will still be our midfield until De Jong arrives. I think one of them will play DM and the other CM and then Eriksen will be the last CM in a 3 man midfield.

Sancho on the right and Bruno on the left, but Bruno will play more like a CAM in the middle. I think we will see more of a modern way to play where the room in front of the defence and behind the midfield will be left empty and then players will run into that empty space and occupy it.

Ronaldo is out and should never be allowed back. He has made his decision and it would be weak of the club to take him back.

Martial and Rashford can fight over the striker position. Lets be honest, there’s probably 0% chance of both hitting form at the same time. It just feels inevitable that one of them will start banging in goals and the other wont.

But there will be lots of rotations for different matches and earlier subs with 5 of them. So many games to play. But i do think this starting 11 would be really good in the majority of our games against low block teams. Where we usually have 70% ball possession, but no clue what to do with it.

I see a lot of people starting with McFred in midfield. Hopefully lessons have been learned that these 2 can't form a good enough partnership. They suffer when teams press on them and they're not creative enough when teams park the bus.
Now I have a lot of time for Fred but he needs a ball player in beside him. Hopefully Frenkie, if not him Donny or Eriksen or Zidane or Savage even, but please God not McFred anymore.

What's weird? Even ignoring how Martial does individually, the type of forward he is is better for Sancho, Rashford and Bruno than the type that Ronaldo is IMO. Ronaldo isn't as good as he was where he's a no brainer. You lose a lot by playing him, so it's what is better for the team on balance. For me, it's clearly Martial, IF he can stay fit.

It's weird because one brings a relative lack of work rate with goals and the other brings a relative lack of work rate without goals and people seem to be preferring the without goals option. So whatever you think the team loses by playing Ronaldo, tell me how exactly it gains by playing Martial?

Ronaldo played a full season for us as a solo striker, a position he's never consistently played in his career (which if someone could explain the logic to me of signing one of the best players of all time and trying to change his position, I'd love to hear it). By his standards he didn't have a great season. The team had an abysmal season - which by the way was happening before he joined with the performances at Southampton and Wolves.

And yet in a season he was expected to adapt to a new role, in an abysmal team, he still scored more goals (in less games btw) than Martial did in his best season for the club.

Since that half decent season, Martial - for all his ridiculous talent - has had two abysmal seasons. And people still want to give the guy opportunities - it would be bad enough if we had literally no other options but to drop Ronaldo in favour of playing him would be utterly insane. It's not even like he's got a great attitude any more than Ronaldo has - he tried to force his way out in January lets not forget.

You can't equate the "relative lack of workrate" between Ronaldo and Martial. Ronaldo is literally the most useless player in Europes big leagues - in the bottom 1% - with his work rate. He does nothing for hold up play, he doesn't do much for link up play. He takes up the same positions that Rashford does despite being asked to be a CF (hurts Rashford), and because of who he is, Bruno goes into little brother mode just pumping it to him. He ends up being a vacuum for all attacking play. And he's not good enough anymore for that to be worth it. The others just play better around Martial, much better, which is better for our team. Off the ball, Martial isn't a work horse but he's fine, and fine is a hell of a lot better than bottom 1%.

Theres a difference between Martial asking to leave because he wasn't being used, to Ronaldo asking to leave because he believes at his current age that he is still too good for United, which is bollocks. Nobody better is remotely interested in him, because he just isn't that good for a team anymore. Yes, he's still a good goalscorer. But you need everyone involved in the team to create chances and play dominant football. Ten Hag's system is much more likely to work with Martial being part of it, than Ronaldo being seperate to it and just being asked to be a poacher and the rest of the team having to cover for him. And that's the key. He's a 37 year old ex winger being played as a striker (and agree, he's never been a good striker), in the hope that he can just score goals to overcome the negatives he now brings, ignoring all system requirements.

On Martial - he hasn't been fit since that season is the main thing IMO. Its very much last chance territory, but if he can bring the 19/20 form back to this season, then he is FAR better than Ronaldo for the team. As a team, we will score more goals, even if individually Martial does not score more than Ronaldo.

Martinez is a LCB just like Maguire. If Martinez is not a better fit than Maguire then I'd have serious questions on EtH's judgement in spending all that money on him. Maguire's captaincy should also eventually go to Ronaldo.

If FdJ & Antony join then:
De Gea
Dalot - Varane - Martinez - Malacia
Fred - Garner - FdJ
Antony - Ronaldo - Sancho

Its a good post but I think you are being way too kind to Martial. I can't argue your points about Ronaldo and where he ranks with work rate etc, but to me he has the intangible of having balls. He will fight and will at least give the centerbacks something to worry about at some point by making a dangerous run or getting on the end of corners.

I have seen it too many times where Martial gets his head down early and then its an absolute walk in the park for the defenders. They know he can be brushed aside like a feather at any time and we have to witness the ball played up front, Martial takes a touch, then the CB pushes past him and easily dispossess him, Tony possibly takes the effort to throw his hands up towards the officials, but mostly just stares dead-faced as the opposition go forward.

I know he's been slightly better this preseason but I have absolutely given up with Martial. Maybe he will prove me wrong and ETH can work a miracle restoring the player we thought we signed, but I am not holding my breath.

And if this is the starting 11 I don't see a chance in hell of finishing in the top 4. The two fullbacks, Fred, and the attackers are gigantic holes that will hold back any progress.

We will desperately need Bruno to rediscover his goal scoring, Sancho to take a huge step up in end product, Rashford and Maguire to show that it was just a dip in form, Erikson to remain healthy, Shaw to remain healthy, Martinez to be brilliant straight away.

Having said all that, if we can manage to bring in Frenkie then I will be slightly more optimistic.
