Lmfao how is this thread still so popular literally nothing is happening
This is the muppets' camping ground. We literally have nowhere else to go. Ain't no muppet resting here until Frenkie signs.

Or worst case for them is he takes a pay cut and waives the 17m and they keep him, and they dont get silva. Legally they have no reason to pay the money
I think it’d be worse for them if he didn’t take the pay cut or waive the 17m and insisted on his valid contract payments. I’m pretty sure they are legally bound to that existing contract.

My goodness that's pathetic. You can see how badly he wants to be further up the pitch. Absolutely can't see him staying to play CB and take the pay cut
He is already restricted in the spaces he can enter as the no. 6 that he places. Has to play within a box under Xavi. As a CB, it's like a bird in a golden cage.

That's all the commentary we heard in the beginning of the window right? How Frenkie plays better for Holland because they allow him to play to his strengths versus in Barca.

There's seeming to be a lot more good reasons to leave Barca than folks are calling out

How can you say that? In the last few days Frenkie has been sad, a backup CB, not for sale, been satisfied by Xavi, told to leave Barca, told to stay, offered a generous pay cut, decided to stay because he loves Barca, also angry at Barca for being cnuts and ate breakfast in a Waffle House.

I remember back on page 605, this looked a done deal.
I said we'd make it to a thousand but none of you believed me

If Frankie is willing to take a pay cut (by half) and not insist on his deserved wages to play for Barca because he loves the team, then by all means he is entitled to do so. In which case, United is better served not having a player pining to play for another team. I personally doubt that he will take that level of pay-cut. If Frankie wants to play in a CL Team in midfield to cement his World Cup place, by playing Frankie in defence, Barca are killing his hope of improving his chances of playing in midfield at the World Cup, if ever this was in his mind. I really wonder what Van Gaal makes of this current situation. Not ideal for the NT that's for sure.

Anybody fancy a conspiracy theory?
What if Barca have asked to delay the deal til after their tour so they can get there levers in place? It’s a little odd that neither club did any business until Arnold and Murtough has visited Barca offices and then we’ve been busy and Barca have gone batshit transfer crazy like both clubs have a certainty. Just a thought.

The early, early reports when this first broke were that FDJ said no or wasn't that interested when talking to ETH. Then he apparently became intrigued. Then ETH apparently felt he could persuade him. I feel like he's not ruled it out as he wasn't sure where he'd stand, and that United and Barca have negotiated because they thought between both clubs they could convince him to leave. That hasn't happened, probably because deep down he just isn't that interested. There's a million different ways ETH and FDJ conversations could have gone that weren't FDJ saying I want to join but giving us a glimmer of hope. It seems our whole strategy this summer is to rely on ETH to identify players. Perhaps he's said FDJ is the only midfielder he can vouch for being good enough, so just go all in and if we don't get him, we'll revisit next year.

The bolded is in no way factual. We might have given up any time within the last few weeks for all we know. Barca don't seem to be pushing all that hard at all and they've been fairly amicable with FDJ from what I've seen. I think their ideal scenario is that they can convince him to stay on reduced terms. Given the lack of interest in him I wouldn't rule that out and I've said that for a long time.
Thing is though they have Sergio Biscuits in FDJs preferred position, and Gavi, Pedri and Kessie all competing for the other CM spot with Frenkie. They don’t need the cost of having him around, even on half wages. He’s the highest earner which they don’t like, and they don’t think he has performed well enough to this point to deserve his wage. I’d argue he is totally expendable to them and it’s better for Barca to get the cash into the club from a sale than to keep him for CB cover having just signed 2 CB.

But would you mind playing out of position or warm the bench if you were getting back your 17million quid? Hell, I would take it up the (lubed) arse for 17million quid.

Simon Stone via bbc website: I assume Ten Hag has some kind of communication with De Jong and knows what the real situation is. I am also under the impression that the alternatives simply do not fit the template. So, should United abandon a player their manager really wants and buy someone not as good for a lot of money? I think they are following the right strategy at the moment.
Stone is a muppet too at heart. He seems to be in the same boat as the rest of us info wise.

Wish I had that belief it was a matter of when not IF with De Jong, genuinely what do you think will happen to make us get this deal over the line then.
I'm not ITK or anything like that, but looking from the outside without all the emotion....

  • Barca have a stacked midfield with Busquets, Gavi, Pedri, Kessie. De Jong is not actually needed next season.
  • Due to a number of issues FDJ hasn't hit the heights he's capable of at Barca and hasn't clicked with the supporters, he is the only big name and therefore big fee signing they can let go without getting major hastle from the fans.
  • They need the cash, they can not afford his wages over the coming seasons and they can not register the players they need to without letting some players go

The only way this falls through is if FDJ agrees to a wage cut and writes off the deferred wages owed, I'd be amazed if that happens, this is all about FDJ getting the money he believes he is owed and eventually it'll be cheaper for Barca to pay out part of or all of that rather than honour the contract they have with him.

How I'd love it for Van Gaal to come out and say publicly if a player does not play in his supposedly "best position" enough, he won't be called up to Dutch national team now.

Except that would go against everything we understand to be the case, it’s more likely they need him to sign off the 17m, and cut his wages in half.

Are there no other professional players Frenkie mould on this planet that we can possibly look at signing?? Is our scouting department really that shit or is ETH just a comfort zone kinda guy?

Of the two I'll take Fred. Scott has to give way for Eriksen so at the end it's not so bad.

What the heck? Did they really put this guy in CB position?

This is probably the most messed up bizarre transfer saga I've ever come across.

Don't even know if he'll ever come to United if he's happy to be CB. Are Barca going to even honor their side of the contract and pay the man the money he's owed.

What a fecked up situation this is.
He isn’t owed anything rn

Don't suppose anyone is willing to apologise for branding me negative over this... oh, wait... my negativity is what has doomed this transfer, I forgot.

Originally, I thought this was going to get done (way back on ETH's first day), now we are being told that it's nonsense that Barca have accepted our bid. Simply don't see it happening any more.

Fine to hang on in there if ETH has heard from the player's own mouth that he wants to come. Otherwise, we have to find a replacement and get on with other transfers. Meanwhile, the comedy duo are looking as ineffective as Woodward

"Barcelona have also not accepted any offers for Netherlands midfielder Frenkie de Jong," (ESPN)

honestly you are looking for a dm or cm who has good pace, positional sense, great passing, dribbling, teamwork and excellent creativity and decision making.

now out or interest I did this on FM22, took fdj main stats, lowered them all by 3, it actually gave me one player, anguissa from Napoli who has much worse creativity. However it would be viable maybe, but anguissa is definitely lower quality and buying from Napoli is as bad as barca.
So in truth you are then talking about lesser players and changing the team again to include more players.

Thats actually very true, Barca haven't accepted any offers because we've not actually made a bid yet.

We've agreed a fee and a payment structure, but until the issues with de Jong and Barca have been sorted, then we won't actually make any official bid, as it'd be pointless. de Jong has probably already said until the wage issue is sorted, he won't talk to any clubs or entertain a transfer. Rightly so too i'd imagine.

As soon as the issues are sorted, i'd guess we'd put our bid in that has been pre-agreed.

Don't see this happening now, he'd be taking a paycut to come here anyway so why take a paycut and go somewhere he doesn't really want to go when he can take a paycut and stay where he wants to?

Unless he's done the dirty on us though you'd of thought we'd have known his intentions all along though

As I've said before - we should indeed know his intentions. but perhaps Laurel and Hardy forgot to ask...

The only reason he’d stay at Barca is because of lifestyle (which includes his and his families happiness, which isn’t something which should be scoffed at).

If it’s a footballing decision, then it’s a no brainer to come to united and have a team built around you in your favoured position, playing for a coach who knows you. No matter what anyone says, that trumps a year in the CL.

But as I say, the lifestyle factor is a huge one. I could see it going either way

I agree that lifestyle cannot be ignored. I think it rains a bit more in Manchester than in Barcelona :). Seriously though, it is important especially if the player has kids of a certain age at school.

But I think playing in the CL is bigger factor for players than we mere mortals realise. Not saying it's right but it does appear to be the case. However, if FDJ thinks Barca are going to win it, he's deluded. I'm pretty sure I know where it's going this year... also, I'm not sure any team is ever really built around one player any more

Surely global warming is counting in Manchester's favour?
