Is it very likely that with everything going on and all the delays, they have only spoken once?

If I was Ten Hag, and I was being told random crap by Laporta that directly contradicted what I had already spoken to Frenkie about, I'd give Frenkie a call and hear what's going on.

The fact that Ten Hag still wants us to keep at it and the club is relaxed about the situation doesn't lend itself to suggest the deal is off.
I'm not arguing that the deal is off. I'm arguing against the reasoning that the deal must be on because else De Jong would have personally told Man United off.

A colossal embarrassment.

The board is acting cheap and ETH can't seduce players like SAF used to do.
Do you have any idea how many players SAF wanted and how many he got? I can assure you that he missed out on signing some big names.

Simple examination of facts

1. Frenkie won't agree to a pay cut
2. Barca literally have said multiple times he has to go if he won't take a pay cut
3. Utd are the only club in for him

Sure it is a complicated deal and Barca and Frenkie are locked in a bizarre stand off over the wages he deferred but the least likely outcome has always been that he will stay in Barca at his current wage. The reduction in salary they want him to agree to would amount to 50M euros including what he has already deferred, I am pretty sure his love for Barca is not going to amount to him writing off that much money.
This reminder needs to pop up on every single page because it seems that one negative article completely clouds everyone’s memory of the facts in this saga. Barça have made it abundantly clear that he cannot stay on his current wage, and they are doing everything they can to solve that situation.

It’s mental to me that some people think there’s a situation where the player stays on his current contract, that is simply not going to be allowed to happen.

I’m still convinced of the real hold-up is because Barcelona desperately want the player to stay, their summer Business tells me that they are absolutely desperate to have the strongest squad possible next season after just watching Madrid win a double, and make no mistake this is a player you want to have in that squad. However this is only possible for them if he forgos tens of millions of euros. I believe selling him to United is an alternative they will take only once they’re certain that they cannot call the players bluff and get him to sign a new deal.

Gascgoine, Batistuta, Sneijder, Robben, Kluivert, tons more I can't think of right now.

Ronaldinho, Ribery, Varane
Ballack, Benzema, Hazard also. Sheesh probably quite a few down the line.

To me it's pretty simple
We can have as many doubts over the feasibility of our recruitment team as possible
We can have our doubts over how willing Frenkie is to join Utd
I however for one second don't believe this is dead or as unlikely as it was a month ago. There have been COUNTLESS repeated instances showing why and when we'd walk away if the player wanted NOTHING to do with us
Most important thing is Ten Hag is part of this deal and knows a hell lot more than the positive people or negative naysays here. If he still feels like the deal should be pursued despite the reported heavily stacked odds against us or regardless of what anyone says we should trust him as he knows what's going on and isn't the type to agree being blindsided. He has enough information to know it's not the case
If we have eggs in our faces in the end then we criticize the club accordingly until then we'll have to keep following this deal with an open mind and living our lives outside this forum:)

You can't force a player to come. I don't think it'll look overly bad at all. We've been given assurances he'd be open to joining (as per Ducker, Whitwell). So if he changes his mind and stays, so be it.

Your tone shows that you're not a fan of Murtough/Arnold, so you're not going to agree, but I don't think this reflects badly on the club at all. We've agreed a fee with the selling club, if the player wants to stay, then there we go.
It absolutely would be a bad look for Arnold and Murtough, even if it's not really their fault. Usually you get the personal agreements sorted out before agreeing a fee with the selling club. Wasting the whole summer chasing a player who doesn't want to come would be an embarrassment for the club.

I'd like to give them both the benefit of the doubt, and I agree that most clubs around Europe know that dealing with Barcelona is a soap opera, so to an extent it's not a bad reflection on the club.
However, if this continues to drag on to deadline day, and we still fail to sign him, and it's then revealed that that he has never given any strong indication that he'd be willing to sign, and yet we've continued to moon over him for months, and not considered viable alternatives, then that does reflect very badly on the club.
At this moment in time, very few people know the truth of whats happening, we are all just speculating.

Is anyone else wishing their days away until the transfer window shuts to put this saga to bed? I just hope we have another DM on our list and that it's completed quickly

We couldn't get a work permit for Essien and then Chelsea simply paid more years later. How is that a rejection on Sir Alex?

If Barcelona are as convinced as all the Spanish reports and ”leaks” that he is not at all interested in joining United can someone explain to me why then they haven’t simply dropped the asking price to 50m euros to get Bayern, PSG, City and Liverpool involved?

Some of these were just rumours, some unobtainable (gabigol), at least one was corporate sabotage
I mean most of these are well documented as Fergie wanting them but i ain't going to go to the effort of proving it.

I wonder how much they still owe Ajax.

Because we were back in for him.
Essien himself has said that a conversation with Drogba stopped him from joining United and convinced him to sign for Chelsea instead

It’s another one of those things that simply doesn’t add up. If Barcelona like the Spanish press think the idea of going to United is so ridiculous and that the player has absolutely zero interest, why aren’t they offering him to other clubs a bit cheaper considering the only thing they’re moaning about is the wages.

Why on Earth would they still keep banking on the United deal if his attitude towards it is anything like the reports the Spanish press want us to believe.

There have been a few times that United have sold players, for example Beckham to Madrid despite Barcelona offering more money for him. But when the player made it crystal clear to United that he would not go to Barcelona and would only go to Madrid, they sold him to Madrid. If Barcelona so desperate to get his wages off the books and so certain he doesn’t want to go to United simply drop the price & offer him to clubs he will go to

We have had far more than that.

I would make the argument that in the 90s we stayed mostly local because of our inability to attract international stars. Roy Keane was very public with his displeasure of us not being able to sign some of these international stars. The same thing happened years later with Rooney.

Batista chose not to join us. Shearer chose not to join us. Hazard and Robben chose Chelsea over us. Kluivert flat out rejected us. We missed out on the likes of Modric and Bale who both clearly chose Madrid over us. We could not keep Ronaldo at United under Fergie.

I dont know why people act like this is new

To see if they were comparable. Shearer's the only one who came close to joining before changing mind. He then regret it for the rest of his life.

Can we move on to players that actually want to join us? Our midfield needs fixing

Another easy answer: because other clubs would go about it by sounding out the player's interest and sorting personal terms first before even starting negotiations with Barca. As you do. And that's where they got stuck.
Meanwhile United agree a transfer fee before being able to agree personal terms. Kind of tells you something about De Jong's eagerness to move, doesn't it.

I'm not letting you get anywhere today :D

hang on, you assume all other clubs on the planet do one thing, yet you assume that one club doesn’t? That’s weirdly convenient for your argument

When is the deadline for barca to register.

They will prolong up until that date to see if de jong or we fall. And not until that date will we know what de jong wants.

However would be fun to lower our offer with 5-10 mill when the date closes in.

Andrei Kanchelskis made me fall in love with Unite
So if, as it appears, we don't get Frenkie, how would we feel about a midfield like this?

------------Fred------------Eriksen--------------
---------------------------------------------------------
-------------------Bruno----------------------------

Honestly I don't think it's too bad. Could even play Martinez in the Fred role. Not saying we don't need another quality midfielder in there, but this isn't terrible.
