To be fair to him, he’s played 30+ games a season for Juve including champions league and played relatively regularly for one of the best international teams in the world.
Holding a stat sheet of him vs McTominay does not tell the full picture - he’s levels above him in just general ability.
As a second/third midfield addition? Good business. As first choice panic? Nah
Exactly, they overpaid given his situation but he's better than what we have now, people who rate him lower than Fred or McTominay are lying to themselves. He's not a world class player, nor was I jumping off my seat when this news broke, but I don't hate this move at all.
From my perspective you still pay a pretty small fee for a guy with a lot of experience, who can play next to Eriksen in midfield until we sign De Jong or a better midfielder next year. Blind, Tadic, Schöne were all guys that were labeled as "done" and ETH gave their careers new life and they proved their worth even in the Champions League. I don't care about Juventus fans mocking Utd on twitter and laughing about it, they have never seen the McFred horrors we have to endure every week.
Every time some club makes a relatively cheap pickup people here on the Caf shout how we should do the same, yet when we do the same it's still conceived as poor business. Juve squeeze us because they know we can be squeezed, but we don't have the luxury of walking away and being stiff negotiators at this point, or the years before, we are in crisis and we NEED an upgrade over what we have to try and salvage something from this season, because we looked absolutely horrendous that first half and there's plenty more of that yet to come if we don't act. He's still 27 too. I'd rather see low risk, high reward moves like this for proven players than throwing another 40-50 million or even more for a Tielemans or Neves.
