More people in the world know who Cristiano Ronaldo is than Manchester United. By most metrics he is the most famous person in the world.
People won’t want to admit it but it’s true.

However, on a football level and when thinking in line with the spirit of the game, no player is bigger than any club.

But beyond football, Ronaldo probably is more recognisable than Manchester United as he transcends the sport. People who don’t watch any form of sport will know him in addition to people who do.

It’s like millions of people who don’t watch sport will know who Michael Jordan is but have no clue who the Chicago Bulls are.

Obviously Ronaldo’s popularity relative to United’s doesn’t have the same disparity or one sidedness as this but it’s somewhat comparable.

If you think some footballer is the most famous man in the world, you're deluded and live a very sheltered little life. Bless you.
Lovely condescending tone.

I think it is probably him or Donald Trump honestly.

It is fairly close as the people who use the best method at spreading awareness of a public figure in human history (social media) are a larger % of demographics who are interested in influencers/athletes than obnoxious politicians.

I would argue that if you do not see the fact that Ronaldo is solidly in contention for the title of most famous person in the world then you live a rather sheltered life and don't understand how social media works in 2022. It is no compliment to him, Kim Kardashian is also one of the most famous people in the world.

Spoken like a millennial who lives vicariously through social media platforms

Yes I'm sure of all the almost 8 billion people on the planet, Ronaldo is by far the most famous, even more famous than Queen Elizabeth II, because he has the most instagram followers. fecking hell

The queen is also very famous.

Mohammad Ali was also more famous than the Queen globally. Cristiano Ronaldo is a global icon, many sporting figures have been, that has feck all to do with being a millennial.

Also re your petty insult, I don't even have an Instagram account ant never have.

Its true. For example, I know who Tiger Woods is but I have no idea what team he plays for.

Wrong
His name will fade with time, but Man united will still be here. He will be nothing compared to the club in few years.

The song In the air tonight is nearly 5 minutes in length. Ronaldo can only stay in the air for 3 minutes when he jumps. Further proof that Phil Collins is greater than Ronaldo

Nope. In fact a bunch of musicians and actors are more famous than Cristiano Ronaldo or any athlete.
I'd argue that is true in America which is very important in terms of assessing fame. Someone like Brad Pitt probably doesn't resonate with the younger generations because he doesn't do the sort of influencer branding and I don't think there are as many "superstar actors" in the younger generation. Not sure why, maybe cause of netflix and there being so many different forms of content now.

Musicians I agree there are a handful who are up there, someone like Beyonce probably runs him close but he is definitely in that group.

I am more in shock that people are so passionately (almost angrily) arguing the FACT that Ronaldo is incredibly famous and undeniably in contention for the most famous person alive.

It's true everywhere. Is Ronaldo famous? Absolutely but you went way too far.

It'll take a LOT of years.

A Michael Jordan documentary was one of the biggest things in pop culture literally a year ago.

By saying he is arguably the most famous man in the world?

Name an actor who is more famous than him. I can name Trump and Beyonce as 2 people who I think run him close, outside of that I would really struggle.

I am a huge company who wants my brand to reach as many people as possible and I am going to hire a sponsor tomorrow. Name someone I would be more sensible to approach than Ronaldo.

So you think that Cristiano Ronaldo is more famous across generations and cultures than Tom Cruise, Will Smith, George Clooney, Brad Pitt and many others? One massive difference between these people and Ronaldo is that their fame is across more generations, all genders and almost all cultures.

Anyway I not going to spend any more time on this.

My assertion is that Ronaldo is one of (potentially THE) most famous people alive.

Literally every metric points to that being true (yes dreaded social media numbers, internet searches, value of his product placement. Call me an awful millennial for understanding that internet activity is not only the best metric of gauging someone's level of fame but the only real metric) , no single person here has offered anything of substance to disprove that and just got upset and insulting probably because they don't like him. I don't really like him either but he is extremely famous and influential, more than nearly anyone. Apologies but that is just a fact.

Those you named? globally? Yes easily. The fact that you would even suggest that George Clooney is more famous than Ronaldo globally at this point is staggering to me.

Will Smith has hit levels of attention he hasn't reached in a long time in the last few months through infamy but consistently over the last 5 years no chance.

Do you think that the millions of people that were adults in the late 90s-early 2000s are all deceased or that their memories have been wiped out?

Influential in what meaningful way though? For instance if he came out with a message about climate change does it hold more weight than a message from David Attenborough because he has a bigger social media following?

Your problem here is you're basing all your opinions from within a bubble of Instagram and the context of what influencers mean on that platform

Cunha at that price is a non-starter. Just don't see the Vardy one happening either.
Replace them with any 2 hypotheticals of your choice. I like Ronaldo and wanted him here but overall its proven to be a terrible call

I'm of the opinion that getting rid of him has the biggest chance to have a sharp turnaround at this point in time. All the noise about how he's dragging the mood down - you'd expect a burst from the players to actually show that the second he left. We need a jolt of some kind and I don't think any signing would do enough in that regards, it has to be with some exits, mainly this one.

Yes more than likely, as fecked up as that is.

Just think how much Marcus Rashford was able to do for the cause of child hunger with a few social media posts in comparison to the charity he teamed up with.

And platforms like instagram or facebook have bogus stats anyway. Not only people buy followers but a fair amount of "normal" followers are bots.

Maybe - I also think our current crop are quick to blame anyone but themselves. Ronaldo for all his faults actually cares about results and winning. Not sure if that's the kind of mentality we want to be losing.
