I don't know how much he is worth but his style of play is what we need IMO. Drogba style.
A fighter and a winner and no one would say extremely talented or skillful. If he's going to make defenders suffer every game that's a great start.

if these 15 goals nobodies are worth 100m makes you wonder how much we'd be talking if a young Drogba, Rooney or Benzema were coming through now

Thought Id share this match comps from against Milan, for people to have a better judge on him in bigger games. I watched this game and there was no support from his teammates at all in this game as Milan complete shut them out. But it was just him on his own against Kalulu and Timori, who are perhaps the most PL like defenders in Serie A he would come across and he took the battle to them. Didnt score but put himself about.

People are comparing this guy to Lukaku? They are both tall black strikers but that's about it from what I can see.

When Drogba was 24, he played for Le Mans and had scored 12 goals in 64 games for them. Wasn't even a third of the player Osimhen is now. Osimhen is 23, and he has the skillset of a modern forward. He will become a better player with time, as forwards usually do.

he was a very late bloomer though, anyway I meant their value after their break-out seasons

Drogba would be 150m+ I would guess in this market

Rooney probably looking at 200m after his breakout euros

Think it’s more a case of there being almost no elite strikers at that level atm, aside from Mbappe and Haaland.
In that era there was a very healthy crop so the market was pretty decent… Now everyone’s paying well over the odds for anything resembling good

I don't think it's that off topic since this deal is apparently contingent on the Ronaldo situation. Saying the point is we're weak isn't a strong point. That is a mindset that ensures we remain so indefinitely. The new CEO can show something different.

Okay, putting him in with the kids was a slight exaggeration, that would be silly. But I believe what ETH is already doing is fine. I don't see that him being a brand player is a major concern or that it will have any impact on sponsors to bench Ronaldo for however many weeks it takes for him to get over his ridiculous temper tantrum. Its like a toddler, once they realise the possibility for getting the new toy is absolutely gone, the process of adjusting to a new reality has to begin.

Benching is a likely short term sporting decision, sponsorships are medium to long term strategic decisions so conflating the two exaggerates the significance of Ronaldo's player power. Our own sponsors also need strong clubs and if we make poor financial and sporting decisions it is not a good association. I think paying players off for not being professional or fulfilling their obligations is poor.
Players have fellowship with their colleagues. What affected Ronaldo has some influence on players close to him.

Sponsors earn money through different venue. They don't dip into club own revenue. A club can make both poor financial and sporting decisions itself, and sponsors can still make money if there is certain brand that work for their interest. If the club is weaker brand than the players' brand, next sponsors pay less to club.

Professionalism is subjective in sport. A player can fulfill all training, attendance requirement, playing obligation and still unhappy, disagreeing with the club that not reach the point of leaking line up, tactic. That's not punishable in the legal term, and unreasonable for club to go out their way to punish a player.

Yes. Ronaldo is egoist, but managing ego is the management's job. Benching him, he can freely display dismay expression to media on the bench.

Ronaldo missing a whole season because our guys trying to look tough in this case is more on us than him from sponsor perspective. He would be at World Cup regardless. It's not like he's refusing to pass, run, training... Ronaldo is pretty much handing transfer request. If we don't use him, then let him leave is a reasonable action.

Remember how SAF handle all the fall out? During the season, he left players out of spotlight for unknown injury reason. If the players were included in match day squad, they were reasonably utilized. No petty publicly punishment, putting fuel into the flame. Ridding the player ASAP at next best available time, and I repeat we used to sell undervalue all to put out the flame, to maintain focus in the squad. Be it RvN, Roy Keane, Becks...

PSG paid 200mil or so for Mbappe. Barcelona followed with 150mil or something for Dembele. So unless you have release clause like Haaland, you're looking at 100+mil.

he looks decent but feck me its a lot of money for decent

I think I'd rather pick up Memphis and save the striker budget for next summer
The issue is unlikely next summer some great now unavailable forwards would become available. It's likely just another batch of newly breakthrough decent forwards, or one season wonders to be looked at.

It's all about how our management view how this guy is, and how desperate his quality to our squad.

I mean, when you see average players going for 70m and good players for 100m… how much can be worth a young, hungry talent with the highest ceiling like Osimhen… 150m??

As for the swap, De Laurentiis would surely mint that to death yet he would be a silly sausage to bring in a destructive black hole like current Ronaldo without Utd paying the very most of his salary.

Come on, we’re not buying him. There’s no way we’re spending 300 million in one window. It seems fairly obvious Antony is our last big signing and we may just do a couple of v cheap/loan deals before September.

Jesus christ mate. CR7 is not playing because he isn’t good enough anymore for a starting role. He isnt moving because nobody can afford him or dont need him. He has been shopped around for 2 months to every possible club in CL and there’s 0 interest.

Nice way of putting a spin on things. He’s old. He is getting past it. Nobody is paying 300k per week for an aged star these days.

Go to Ronaldo thread and learn to read. Only recently club agreed to for Ronaldo to leave.

This is a private conversation kind of (See my point? @Abraxas ). Don't butt in if you're just interested in Ronaldo this or Ronaldo that.

The other poster thought it's good play for the Ronaldo transfer involved debate. I already agree to disagree 3 post ago.

If it’s a private conversation go have it through private messages not on full display on a forum.

The Ronaldo hate might be stupid but the Ronaldo fanboism is ridiculous too. Next up why it’s Man Utd fault if Ronaldo can’t sprint anymore.

What fanboyism? Your issue with reacting to any thing Ronaldo instead of reading what debate about?

Hint: ruthless ridding players referenced to how SAF used to do.

Could only have seen this happen if Antony wasn't signed, as I can't imagine we have another fee that big in us this summer.

And while Osimhen is a better talent than Antony, the latter comes with the security of the manager having already worked with him before. At a point where we're trying to adapt to what the manager wants, that counts for a lot.

Plus Osimhen will likely still be there next summer.

I think he or another top striker should be our main target next summer along with a right back. I think getting Antony to replace Elanga in the starting 11 is more important than trying to upgrade on Martial (if he is ever fit) for the time being. That being said, having a target man type striker who is able to hold up and be an aerial threat would make a huge difference both in possession and for our wingers. It is a night and day difference in our team's overall play seeing Martial (when in form) compared to the rest of our options up top.

:houllier: :houllier: :houllier: Absurd thing to say. Antony is one of the biggest attacking talents in the world. The reality is that it's impossible to know who ends up being the better player, but talent wise Antony is just so far ahead of Osimhen.

Based on what? Osimhen was already purchased for 70 odd million euros as a 21 year old. You could argue he was one of the biggest talents in the world at the time and in terms of striker prospects probably still is. It certainly is arguable and far from absurd. That being said, they are about as far apart in terms of play style and position that any further comparison is completely pointless.

Have you watched him play ? That was a serious price tag on him 2 years ago. The question is: has he grown to justify it or has he stalled hence it was an overpay. At 21 you still pay for hype and potential at 23 some of it should be banked in.

I dont know how to feel about this. Is he on course to be the next Drogba or the next Lukaku.

This is fecking dreadful video for a player we’re ‘apparently’ willing to spend a record amount on AND subsidise Ronaldo’s wages for the selling club… We’re absolute mugs if it’s true
What do you make of this video of Drogba?

I mean, A LOT better… No? What am I missing here?
To me it’s a video of a clumsy, profligate player with some great natural assets and a lot of stuff still to iron out. Dribbles that bounce off the opposition and go nowhere, shots pulled well wide when other players were in better positions, ridiculous shots he was never going to score. Which was trademark Drogba for his first two years at Chelsea too. You can find a lot of the same stuff in Osimhen’s game against Leicester.

Given it’s a highlights video you wouldn’t expect him to be going for a similar place to a ballon d’Or winner like Shevchenko. You could make better highlights videos of both players but it is the case their style can make those videos in the early stages of their career look pretty questionable.

Napoli obviously bought him hoping he’d have that breakthrough season like Drogba had at Marseille and then his price would go up by 50%. That hasn’t happened yet but it doesn’t seem outrageous to think it could. The Drogba in 2010 looked nothing like the Drogba in 2000.

If you've watched enough of both to have a firm opinion and have come away thinking Antony is miles better than Osimhen then I think the way you judge players might be slightly suspect.

Antony is very talented and I'm glad we look like signing him. But, being real, he's also a player who returned 8 goals and 4 assists last season in a weak league, who we're more keen on than other clubs because our manager has already worked with him. Let's not overplay where he ranks in terms of football's world talents right now just because we happen to be buying him.

If Antony is "one of the biggest attacking talents in the world" then Osimhen, young player of the year in Serie A last season, certainly is too.

Why can't I, to different people who don't read, but say the same thing?

What are you here for? Osimhen transfer related or just trying argue?

I am odd to respond to you now, or it's someone like you? I don't need a response here. Of course.

Not a whole lot, but he is putting up decent numbers in a top league and has a lot of room for growth just based on his physical capabilities and technique.

Well, in terms of present and potential future output, there is no way Antony is better than Osimhen? I dare to say, that 90-100m tag on Antony is a silly joke until he becomes the new Ronaldo. On the other hand, Osimhen has both the physical and the technical attributes to lead any attacking line in an energetic way, and he can score for fun.

Does he really have the technical though? He seems to be going the fast strong direct route rather than the ‘look at me changing directions and breaking ankles’ kind of player.

Look, I don’t know an awful lot about Osimhen, but one video is - as you allude to - a really talented guy trying a bunch of stuff, occasionally scoring some bangers inbetween… and the other is a guy scoring a lot of headers from 6 yards and going down in the box.

He could very well be the next big thing, but I’m not massively enthused about spending over £100m on him + a big chunk of our top paid players wages for the privilege at this point, based on that, is all…certainly not in this hectic window where we’ve already overspent thanks to our ineptitude
