Out of the box thinking:

He’s a better player than Dalot. But is he a better right back than Dalot? I for one would be intrigued to see if he could play like an inverted right back, a bit like how Cancelo plays left back for City. His touch and passing might come in handy there. A bit problematic though with two lefties on the right, if we buy Antony..

Thoughts?
Genuine question- has there ever been left footed RB?

I can think of numerous right footed players playing LB, but can't think of opposite example.

Evra played a few minutes there in the 7-1 Roma match. He even scored from that position.

I don't even know what foot Irwin used as he was great with both.
So let me pretend and say him for a while

Yeah, was kind of thinking the same about him.

Zambrotta was right footed who also played on both sides, but for me he was better on the left than on the right which is also kind of interesting.

Lefties are much rarer than right footed players, so are more valuable someplace else than playing RB, that's only explanation I have for the lack of lefties RBs.

For the positional play, my understanding is that you want to have forward and back players complement each other. So, an inverted winger + natural fullback or vise versus. Otherwise, two right-footed or two left-footed will go into the same zone to maximize their impact. That’s not good. In contrast, an inverted winger can move inside and allow natural fullback occupies the zone wide so that they occupies two vertical zones.

Gotta love how the players who reportedly went to the board are the ones getting phased out. I mean they had a point but you can tell they thought the signings would help not replace them.

He doesn’t look very fit or is it just me

Yeah those two are fecked, amazing how they had a great 2020/21 season including the euro only to shit their pants on the 21/22.

Im actually happy they both lost their starting place, it was amazing how poor they played last season yet they were still starting every single game.

I know Shaw has not performed for a while and Malacia has very quickly stolen his spot, but I am curious to see if the renewed enthusiasm that Malacia, Martinez and Varane have brought to the back four will have an effect on Shaw. You can see that Dalot is loving it now and doing everything with a confidence and purpose that he clearly lacked before, and I think a lot of it is down to the encouragement and example set by his new teammates. Hopefully Shaw, Maguire and Lindelof can benefit in the same way. We're going to need all three of them this season.

Shaw doesn't seem motivated for anything but the national team

It is really a mystery what happened to Shaw. He definitely has the talent, but he is just so inconsistent that it is frustrating.

Agree with this. I actually think the backup lads will learn from the example set by the current 4 and follow their lead

We don’t have to watch him trot around the pitch half-paced, and he can eat all the kebabs and donuts he wants.

Win-win situation for both parties.

There are far more right-footed options in football so there is unlikely to be a need to play someone on their wrong side at RB. At LB it is far more likely a team doesn’t have a top quality left-footed option at fullback, especially after an injury, and will have to go for a right-footer.

Even if Shaw is technically better than Malacia, Malacia has the intensity which Shaw will never have.

The way he gets out to players, gets his foot in, stops the rythm of the opponents, closing down wingers so they cant receive and turn, that's where that left side has improved in recent weeks.

Malacia's participation when the team is moving the ball around is also quite superior. His ability to pass and move is simply on another level to Shaw.

Yeah because Shaw and Maguire both loved having 10 touches and then passing to each other and putting pressure on the player receiving the ball. Malacia at least will try play the ball forward.

Yep. There were so many times Shaw would just let the guy cross and it was frustrating. He would basically be in a position where hes not tight enough to stop a cross, but far enough if it hits his hand, it would be a penalty. And not far away to be one of the men to clear a cross out.

He will need to play cup matches and really put a mark down to be considered as a sub option for games and then possibly a starter for some games too. (barring injuries)

Is he alright? Not in any training videos and Ten Hag weirdly batted away a question about his availability.

If he was on the bench in the last game he can't have health problems you wouldn't think. Probably just being a tosser again and Ten Hag isn't having it.

Shaw, Maguire and Lindelöf don't have it. They don't have the urgency, aggressiveness and passion. Lindelöf has always been soft, Maguire is Maguire and Shaw is lazy and has no intensity to his game. There is no hope. Once we replace Dave, we will look even better.

AWB, Lindelöf, Maguire, De Gea and Shaw are not a great set of players. i expect 2-3 of them will be gone next summer. And the others the year after.

I'm sure that if they don't follow the example, then they may find themselves surplus to requirements.

I agree about Lindelof, always too weak in tussles, Maguire just seems too lethargic, no go in his game, seems to have got progressively worse last season. Shaw I don't agree is lazy, he has made some tremendous breaks forward, and has got some pace, but when running back to his own goal, he doesn't seem to find that pace, he is a bit too inconsistent. He certainly worked hard when Telles came in, but with Fernandez getting good reports from the Preston fans, I think Ten Hag can possibly let him go, although I think he will appear in Europa League, and obviously cover for Malacia this season.

Hopefully Brandon gets the Europa League games if Shaw isn't turning it up in training.
