Fergie time was a ridiculous thing too. It wasnt that Manchester United was getting more extra time but it stood out because Manchester United would score in it. Manchester United scored more goals in extra time because Manchester United were just a better team with (much) better players against a tired team in a period when footballers werent as fit as they are now.
Same as the FA helping Manchester United to win and Howard Webb being in Fergie his pocket. Just ways to cope with the fact that your main rival is doing well and better than the team you support.
