Hes right and wrong at the same time. Maguire was made captain purely because he was English and a centerback. Ole thought he would be like a John Terry for us. And then because he was captain he was exempt from being dropped by Ole and Bailly didn't have a fair competition with him even if he was fit. It's not United as a club though, just the specific manager who wanted to toss 50m at Sean Longstaff to be "Carrick" and threw 50m at Wan Bissaka. Was a ridiculous transfer policy.

It was a big problem last year. Some players were undroppable until all hope was lost and Ragnick tried some things.

Maguire even saw it as a sort of appreciation of his qualities, "if I was so bad as you think, the Manager wouldn't pick me every week".
I'm not saying Bailly would've been the solution, but the rules should apply to everyone.
If you don't perform over weeks, someone else got a chance in your spot. Wether you're the 80m captain or not.

Interesting. I love this Ole bashing.

So why is it that a Swede was starting ahead of him? Lindelof.

Also, when Varane was fit, he started almost instantly. French international btw.

When Bruno was fit, he started almost every game.

When DDG was fit he was in.

Finally, since November Rangnick was in charge and I didnt see Bailly play much... maybe Ole was still picking the team then?
‘Bashing?’

Forward your complaints to Mr Bailly, I was simply elaborating on his comments.

Interesting he praises Ten Hag. So it's not a shot at him for sure but Maguire is the only obvious target as it's his position

Could argue Shaw and Rashford too

Right. Maguire was made captain only because he was English, something new learnt.

Yep, we played Maguire as the only CB, not like we had a swede next to him right?

Bailly normally always played RCB and Maguire LCB under Ole, Lindelof and Varane played there btw. Also, whenever Varane was fit, he would start too.

Same went with Bruno, whenever he was fit he started, ahead of Englishman Lingard.

Oh so we counting media bids as a thing now yeah? Forget that he signed a French CB for 40m, Portugese Bruno, Portugese Ronaldo.

Rashford, AWB and McTominay were nailed starters too no matter what. Henderson getting covid killed his plans with replacing De Gea with Henderson too.
Ole wanted to have British core. We all knew that. Why people are now surprised because one player said it publicly?

Things aren't binary, but Maguire started because he was English? Got you.
This is not how conversations are had in real life . You said he didn’t play because he wasn’t fit - this is verifiably not true. Me saying his point is valid is referring to the fact that some players were favoured. Bailly will have more insight into why they were favoured than both me and you.

Pretty much confirms the Maguire story that some players were unhappy with his constant inclusion. Makes you wonder how much truth there is in the other rumors that were leaked last year-maybe more than I initially gave credit to.

It's a basic fundamental of leadership and team dynamics. Once a part of the team feel they aren't going to be given a fair chance no matter what they do, the team will collapse eventually.

It was obvious. Ole wanted British signings, like the Longstaff brothers

So that's why Bailly wasn't playing. Here I was thinking it was because he's an injury-prone liability.

Don't think that has anything to do with nationality. We just kept rewarding underperforming players for too long.

Good lad calling out the previous circus act management. Wish he had named some names while at it. Happy that ETH has put an end to this.

Fully fit Bially or half fit Maguire for that Leicester?
Surely that's a oxymoron? History tells us that either way by half time we would be playing with a half fit CB but yeah from the outside looking in you would go with the fit player but who knows how Bailly was training etc...

Shouldn’t Henderson have got his position back then?

Shocked at most of the responses in there, not how I saw them going. Not sure what club you lot have been following, but Bailly is spot on, not sure how you could argue what he's saying with a straight face.

"Utd favoured players that weren't injured"........ Many things to have a go at UTd about the last few years, this isn't one of them

Bailly is just letting his frustration out and trying to externalize failure. There's really no substance to it. I'm not saying Maguire hasn't been dogpoo but there's nothing Bailly did that made him deserve a place in the starting 11 when he was fit. In fact, I remember the whole toxicity started with Bailly questioning Ole about his selection of Maguire over him last season after that Leicester defeat. Nothing more than a sourpuss & in the same league as Lingard and Pogba.

I think the main point in this is getting lost in the nationality debate. Baily even says it as a throwaway comment. His main point was that some players were no longer picked on merit.
That is an undeniable fact and there were scores of threads with posters writing the same thing.

He is better than Maguire, so let’s get that out of the way first. In that sense, I feel for him that he rarely played. However, he was also hardly ever fit, and a player should never air his dirty laundry about the club who technically still employs him in public anyway. One of those who have to be sold next summer.

And the debate does not have to be restricted to Bailey/Maguire.

Eric Bailly's eccentricity makes him commit at least 2 destructive errors in each game he plays. Even with a crap Maguire, I just can't see anyone picking Bailly over Maguire. Like other posters have pointed out earlier, why did he not replace Varane/Lindelof?

Worrying that we were willing to keep him despite a mountain of evidence that would show that's not the correct move
I don't think so at all, think Ten Hag just wanted to see them all for himself and form his own opinion whether he could improve/use them or not. Fine by me.

I agree with the message behind Baily's posts but and if he had been consistently fit and not had a couple of howlers then I would be 100% behind it but there clearly have been more factors at play than just a player's nationality, Utd clearly have given plenty of opportunities to non-Brits throughout the first 11. I feel this is a blame them not look at myself situation.

I do think that not only Utd but clubs and fans throughout the PL and below do see some prestige in having a core of British players, same as we do seeing youngsters come through, I doubt this would be any different in any other league, I imagine Real Madrid prefer to have a core of Spanish players, Bayern Germans and so on and so forth, I do not see any issue with this as long as a player is not being discriminated against because of their nationality, I don't see sufficient evidence from Baily to back this up.

Maguire is the English international who is also captain and came for a recordprice. It isnt that unthinkable that someone with that profile will be offered more chances than someone else. To keep the value up or give him the chance to play himself in form. It isnt fair but it is understandable. Bailly is right though that Maguire got too many chances last year and that he should have been taken out of the team. Right now we are shown the results when Maguire is taken out of the team.

I doubt Maguire would play for Manchester United if he wasnt English.. his nationality did favour him there too.

Perhaps if Donny said this it might carry some weight but Bailly simply didn't get into the team due to fitness.

Has Maguire been overplayed? yes but he was always fit while others were not.
United are probably not the only club guilty of this and at least now players are being favoured on performances.

He was rightfully overlooked. If he was better than Lindelof or Maguire, or even remotely close , he wouldn't have had to gone to France and fight for a Europa league place. He is full of himself and I'm glad he is finally gone. A total liability at this level

I don't think this debate should strictly be about Bailly. It was obvious some players not performing well were giving really really long ropes to find form while others were hooked after singular poor performances.
That can be construed as unfair. Once a set of players feel treatment is unfair, that teams chemistry is ruined. I think we are getting too bogged down in dabates about Bailly/Maguire and nationality.
