He isn’t calling Rooney a rat mate, it’s quite simply a difference in what he’s saying.

I agree with you pal.
I think I've actually said similar to someone before saying "you and some other twats", not actually meaning they're a twat themselves. :wenger:

You're reading it the way you want to read it.
He didn't say "Rooney is a rat". He was light heartedly saying "and the other rats" when Rooney's criticism came up.
So he's including Rooney in the rat category.

What don't you understand. Also there's nothing light hearted about calling people rats.

Calling Wazza a rat. I’m lost for words. What an absolute despicably abhorrent thing to say about an actual United legend. Who choses to use words like that for a former teammate even if he isn’t your friend? No one even does that to a rival player you actually hate. And what did Rooney do to him exactly? It wasn’t even a criticism. Rooney isn’t my favorite player and if even Scholes or keane use such language for him I would start to despise them.

Not really. Possibly ambiguous, especially with English not being his first language, but you really can't rule that out from what he said.
I know if I had said those words I'd be including Rooney.
That's without factoring his general conduct throughout the interview and things like not shaking Neville's after he criticised him.

Did I miss it, or was there no mention of the kid/mobile phone incident?

Sad the fairy tale ending didn't work out. Can only hope this interview turns out to be a blessing in disguise and he's actually done us a massive favour in kickstarting the reboot of the club's infrastructure.

No, he is. "The rest of the Rats" as in, Rooney and the rest of them, the ones that are left after just mentioning Rooney. People are going to great lengths to excuse him here but clearly language comprehension isn't peoples best quality if they are overlooking the context in which it was said. Piers basically baited him into saying it and creating some kind of false narrative where Rooney absolutely despises Ronaldo for some reason?

The Ronaldo defense straws are getting more tenuous by the minute!

It's just a weird bit of the interview to get hung up on.

The most important question is what the heck is he doing giving this interview, what he's suggesting about the lack of respect for Ten Hag, and what he thinks is going to happen now, bearing in mind seemingly there wasn't interest in the summer. Why would there be half way through the season, now teams know what happens if he doesn't play every game?

I'm afraid you're not in the right thread for a balanced discussion, not even in the right forum probably

Why do you post here, considering you don't like the forum, the moderating and from reading your posts, you don't like too many of the posters either?

Interesting.

Maybe give ETH a sabbatical for the rest of the season and bring a Ronaldo-friendly manager in until then? Or Ronaldo as player-manager? Then he could pick himself as often as he likes.

I can’t see how it would work otherwise. I had hoped that after the summer debacle he would knuckle down to a squad role. He clearly hasn’t. Do you honestly believe he will now, after having had all that smoke blown up his arse by Piers?

Someone here had even suggested that they ought to make Ronaldo a DOF of united earlier.
Wonder what he thinks of that suggestion now

I regret Ronaldo ever got the opportunity to wear our club's shirt after he did this. I wish he had never signed for us, not even the first time round.
I was rightly gutted about missing out on Ronaldinho all these years. Would have been a 100 times better signing if not for that cnut Peter Kenyon. How I wish to have the power to go back in time and change that.

He didn’t say that, read what he actually wrote before swearing at me, wasn’t grouping Rooney with the others it’s simple to understand

I'm not sure if people are just reading the quote cold too. If they saw him deliver it they'd see he was actually laughing along with it.

I wasn't swearing. Sorry if you read it like that.
How he wasn't grouping? I read it and watched the clip. That "AND" groups Wayne in that group

The rest means other in that context. There are no others without an original example. It’s a reach to defend Ronaldo on this

You see that part is wrong and it's actually an example of the point I'm making. United commercial success is based on several decades of team success, that team success allowed a continuous and positive image, it wasn't based on a single player, it wasn't based on a single team and it wasn't a short term process or linked to a specific transfer. You do not get a stable and loyal fanbase through the transfer of a single player.
Think you’ve misread. At no point did I say United became popular due to a lack of success, we’ve matched a state run club because of our success which lead to our penetration of a global fan base (in particular China and India) and ability to monetise our brand to a silly degree without success on the pitch for the last decade. You see how this proves the long term point I was making to you?

It is factual that many Asian markets, particularly China, are ‘icon markets’ there is less of a club loyalty and often fans follow players. Juventus were the top Italian team in China and then Ronaldo leaves, they don’t win Serie A a single time after complete dominance for a decade and AC are now most popular.

This is old news though, even when we partnered up with AON all those years ago they officially stated (David Prosperi) ‘Asia, particularly India and China, are prime targets for revenue growth and being associated with the Manchester United brand will, we believe, help us to greatly build our brand and grow our business in this region’. That was in 2009!

As said, Ronaldo is a marketing dream for this region (bar Korea due to Son) and given there aren’t really any world class Chinese or Indian, Indonesian etc players yet, he’s the next best thing to get quick access into that market.

That's bonkers mate. He'd have to have done a lot to better Ronaldo's first spell here.

I don't how it works in portuguese but in french, he basically called Rooney a rat. "Rooney et les autres rats" would include Rooney among the rats. It's basically other(autres) that makes the link. If I'm not mistaken outros works the same way in portuguese.

So the only plausible explanation if didn't call Rooney a rat is that he can't speak to save his life.

Amazing that so many people aren't understanding the joke here

Is it amazing though? We have people here still defending Ronaldo’s comments and actions, after all this time. The level of ignorance and stupidity…..it’s not a surprise that a very simple joke (albeit hilarious) on their behaviour has gone way, way over their heads.

  . I can't stop laughing about that quote and posts about it.
We need separate thread about it. With poll. "Did Ronaldo called Rooney a cnut?"
A) yes
B) yes

True.

Sad but true.

“Not just him, imagine what the others rats would think”

he’s obviously holding Rooney in higher regard that others that criticise him, I mean if you can’t understand that.

Why are people trying to flip everything he is saying like it's ok and he actually meant something else, it's actually bonkers to read.

of all the shite he has said, it's weird to literally now be pretending to pretend he didn't mean to call Rooney a rat and he holds him in higher regard, after already displaying clear dislike for him already. The mental gymnastics
