Well their rationale is that public drinking and drunkeness will offend the many non-alcohol drinkers attending matches

Obviously that isn't an issue in a VIP box

Still i don't quite buy this excuse for the late change, sure they are many from the Gulf attending but still hundreds of thousands of fans from elsewhere who will be inconvenienced by this last minute change - I posted the number here:
https://www.redcafe.net/threads/who-is-going-to-qatar-2022.474013/
I understand this. They and Dubai shelter kids especially from drinking. So I wouldn’t be surprised if this was a huge reason. Drinking locations in Dubai is strictly restaurants and bars, most of which are 18 and up. I had this issue when wanting to go to a nice restaurant with my family. Perhaps VIPs are over 18s only.

This is hilarious. Either there are no gay people being prosecuted or for some reason gay people are fking in front of 4 people who are anti gay and testify against them. No wonder Quatar is so scared of LGBQT. They must be crazy gays fking all over the place. Parks, bus stops, cinemas. Must be crazy out there! Lock them up! Lock them up! Lock them up!
Happy to have brought some hilarity to your day.

If we really think there are no gays in Qatar we're deluding ourselves. Do some research on Google and find out how many of these are prosecuted or killed for being gay in Qatar.

Come back with an answer.

In May 2022 some hotels on FIFA's official list of recommended accommodations for the World Cup event were outright refusing to provide accommodations to same-sex couples, while other hotels on the list indicated they would accept reservations for same-sex couples so long as they hid their relationship in public.[30] FIFA claimed that it would ensure that the hotels mentioned are once again made aware of the strict requirements in relation to welcoming guests in a non-discriminatory manner.[31] During a press conference in Germany on May 20, the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani stated that the LGBT visitors would be welcomed to the 2022 World Cup but they need to respect the nation’s culture.[32]

On 21 September 2022, According to a report by The Guardian, FA (Football Association) has assured LGBT+ couples will not face arrest while holding hands or kissing in public in Qatar. FA has also declared that fans with rainbow flags will not face arrest as long as they do not “disrespect” the local culture and norms by draping flags over mosques in Qatar.[33][3

Apparently the call came from the Qatari royal family - I expect one of them hadn't understood where exactly beer was going to be sold until Budweiser started setting up their stalls outside the stadium and then decided it was unacceptable
Which begs the question - how the hell has the Qatari royal family been planning the world cup for 12 years, yet only realised that they had promised to sell beer inside the stadium 2 days before the kick-off?

I think you're being incredibly naive here.

Alcoholic Beer was never going to be sold inside the stadiums at any point (apart from VIP boxes)

The issue is only about where it's sold close to stadiums

Bit of a daft tweet that
Piers Morgan has blatantly been bought off by Qatar.

He posted something accusing world cup critics of islamophobia the other day. Imagine believing that Morgan genuinely cares about islamophobia.

The man just says whatever will get him most money/attention.

I never said there were no gays. I said there must be none prosecuted if they need 4 witnesses. You said nothing happens unless they are having sex and 4 people witness it. How is that possible unless people are having sex in front of people? The law is obviously a sham. A joke. And ridiculously ridiculous. Thats why Im laughing.

Come back with an answer how you are catching these gay people in the act of fking. Id love to know how its possible

"Following discussions between host country authorities and Fifa, a decision has been made to focus the sale of alcoholic beverages on the Fifa fan festival, other fan destinations and licensed venues, removing sales points of beer from Qatar's Fifa World Cup 2022 stadium perimeters," said a statement from world football's governing body.

This is from 2 days ago. They announced they have decided to remove sales points of beer from stadiums 2 days ago.

Why are you talking shite? Does Hamad al-Thani mean that much to you?

It says 'stadium perimeters' - that's not inside the stadium !

As I said already, alcohol was never at any point going to be sold inside the stadiums

The change is about Budweiser having stalls around the stadia on a matchday

"The ban on alcohol consumption seemed to apply only to fans attending games. Beer and other drinks, including an official FIFA Champagne and an array of sommelier-selected wines, will still be available in stadium luxury suites reserved for FIFA officials and other wealthy guests."

Get fecked plebians, those of us in the VIP seats will be getting pissed off our tits and fornicating all over the place.

The world today is a mental place when you think about it. A few corrupt gowls take a back-hander a few years ago and this kicks off a set of reactions that result in the World Cup being played in an extremely religious, close-minded oil nation with no real tradition in football, 6500+ workers literally die building extremely expensive and performative stadia so predominantly pampered millionaires can kick a ball up and down, in extreme heat (for no reason). All the while interrupting every domestic league (for no reason). Now the plebs can't even wash the taste of disdain for the world we live in away with a beer in the stadium.

Honestly, feck the world and feck this tournament. I'll still watch it, but I'll hate myself for doing it. At least the ship has already sailed on that one.

So you found nothing on Google about the nasty Qataris' on a killing spree of gays?

You're simply not understanding the reasoning behind having open sex in public. In Islamic countries, if an Islamic country follows religious law the courts would need 4 witnesses to prosecute. The UK which is so-called progressive in these matters needs 2 witnesses to bring a prosecution. Basically, what I am saying is if a gay couple has sex in a private setting there is no problem anywhere in the world. Religiously speaking, if you follow Christianity, Judaism, Islam or any other religion that is between you and whoever you believe in to reconcile.

"There will be many fan zones where you can buy alcohol in Qatar and fans can simultaneously drink alcohol. I think if for three hours a day you cannot drink a beer, you will survive.

"Especially because the same rules apply in France, Spain, Portugal and Scotland. Here it has become a big thing because it is a Muslim country? I don't know why. We tried and that is why I give you the late change of policy. We tried to see if it was possible."

A question not raised enough is what's going to happen with 7 stadiums after the world cup. It's hardly a sporting nation.

I have no idea either, yet.

This was an issue in Brazil and that is famously a huge footballing nation. Its such a disgusting waste of resources.

If there are only 300k citizens, will the total capacity of the stadia be more than this?

Has been raised in other threads - this is the alcohol thread!

Basically most are being dismantled and repurposed - apparently some will be sent to developing countries, not sure how that is going to work exactly

I believe some can be dismantled after. They are not all permanent. Sorry, can’t remember the source.

That's the worst part of hosting the WC in Qatar. Just imagine if the cost of staging the WC had gone into providing hospitals, education, infrastructure, etc. The money men have lost their sense of compassion for reality.

Apologies, I've not visited the WC forum. I've mostly been away from the Caf over the last few months. WC is not my passion. Missing going to United games. :(

TBF Qatar are not lacking in infrastructure - this kind of accusation was correct in South Africa or Brazil where WC stadiums have become white elephants and a dire need for hospitals etc but the Gulf lot have money to burn

He clearly hasn’t watched himself defend, if he thinks sober people can enjoy it.

In Portugal we have stadiums from Euro 2004 with no clubs playing there that get a friendly match once or twice a year. Enormous waste of resources, the central government often has to send money to local municipalities just to keep the stadiums in acceptable conditions.

I like how some people started hating this world cup only after this no beer thing

And it's probably one of most sensible things about it.

Spoke sense for the 6 seconds there.... but he does make a valid point about drinking at football, considering where they are it's a wise decision.

I should have mentioned the money could have been donated to needy countries.

Why do you need alcohol when all fans looked so happy at the Parade Inc.
I agree. That rendition of coming home from the English brigade doesn’t need alcohol as fuel. Neither do the famous songs from the terraces “Gareth is a super coach!” Or “Harry Kane is a super player!” Class.

I suppose so. But as a non-drinker I guess it’s difficult for me to understand the full level of devastation of taking away 90 minutes of Budweiser.
honestly when you put it that way it does seem a lot of moaning about nothing. Literally 2 hours of drinking tops have been taken away from people who are just gonna now pre drink and then go drinking the minute full time whistle blows anyway

Yeah the booze thing is neither here nor there. No big deal.

And there's a solid argument for why it should be banned from stadiums.

Their loss. They’re missing out on the simple pleasure of watching the English person on vacation who can’t hold their liquor getting drunk, running their mouth and getting beaten up by the locals.
