Sums up how i feel. Now seriously considering fecking this world cup off.

Gay rights are more important than football...unless supporting them might affect whether we get a yellow card during the football.

There's being weak, and then there's being caught out being a bunch of posturing, virtue signalling twats. This comes firmly under the latter.

Shirt which has message that goes against hosts "values".
Yeah but according to people like Beckham and others apparently hosting this World Cup will help Qatar get to exposure to the outside world, evolve and become more progressive. So the guy with the shirt was only doing his bit to help challenge their values.

Initially they claimed that rainbow flags wouldn't be a problem. Then, when the tournament itself was approaching, that security twat came out with the "we might confiscate your flags to protect you" nonsense. And now, they're actually detaining people for wearing feckin' t-shirts.

They're taking the piss, aren't they? Actively trying to provoke people?
From the banning of Beer at stadiums, banning Kosher food, not allowing Jewish people to pray in public, getting FIFA to ban the rainbow armbands and now not even letting people wear colourful/rainbow clothing at the stadiums it's obvious that Qatar are going back on their word last minute on a lot of issues.

From the outside it looks like they just told everyone what they wanted to hear on many issues then in the days leading up to the tournament once everyone was in country they've rolled back on many promises.

If you lack the self control to respect your hosts much publicised cultures, values and traditions you can't complain when met with a proportionate response
Ban. That's only fair as you are in favour of proportional responses.

I have no idea either, yet.

No right/wrong issue for you then?

Can you protest unjust laws in your own country or should they be respected too?

What about a law you protested in your own country, surely consistency would dictate you protest that everywhere?

Proportionate? It's a fecking shirt. "OH NO! COLOURS!!!! BANISH HIM!"

And being intolerant of intolerance is, paradoxically although it may be, perfectly fine. Human rights are more important than respecting the culture of some jumped-up posturing oil state run by extremist theocrats.

If you want to do something there is always a solution.
Take off Kane in 88min and give the new armband to substitute player. The game was already over. People expect too much from milioners who live removed from reality.

If you don't allow fans to enter a stadium with a shirt with some colors around a football, you can't host a wc.
Well, you can obviously:wenger:.
Look, every action has reaction. And reaction is not based on what is right and what is wrong.
They are hosts. They have laws. These laws are morally shit but those are laws in their country. If you don't follow them, you will be punished. It is simple logic.
You either don't go there or you follow those laws. Same as with booze or some other shit which is normal in other countries.

That's not upholding a law, that's flexing. In a way I admire them.

What's with the yellow cards? I haven't been watching or following.

Evidently you can if you just slightly threaten to give a yellow card to anyone who claims to care about it.

Yes, that is what it looks like.

Next thing, they'll be doing raids on hotels in downtown Doha in order to catch any adulterers and/or same sex couples in the act.

I don't get the logic, though. What are they trying to achieve with this? If the basic idea behind spending billions on hosting the World Cup was to present an image of their country that is somewhat palatable (for the purposes of sportwashing or whatever one prefers to call it), all this nonsense surely undermines that effort?

Those laws being challenged are the only way they'll ever change though.

Players were going to wear armbands in support of gay rights, then completely backed down when fifa threatened to book them.

Gay rights are now officially less important than whether or not you maybe might get a yellow card in the football. You know, the thing Luke Shaw sometimes willingly gets just because he's too lazy to run back towards his goal. Or Sterling is regularly willing to risk getting in order to try and cheat a free kick by the corner flag.

It's definitely undermining it, but who knows if that was their motivation at all.

A show of power? Yeah, we can do what we want. Sportwashing is not only to pull a veil over things but moreso to create a shiny thing adjacent. In this case, it's a long-term gain to be on a list of host nations. And a huge show of strength to show they told the arrogant western media and FIFA and the English FA what to do.

It's like they've decided to just let the mask fall completely: "Oh, you thought we were trying to charm people? Nah, mate, think again! We're cnuts and we're proud of it!"

That's awful to hear. I hope some team still takes a stance on it.

Yeah, that could be it. A lot of people who were already more or less on their side will undoubtedly love this too. And - if we're honest - they were never going to actually change anyone's opinion who were not on their side with regard to the central issues here.

It wouldn't surprise me if that was a large part of the motivation behind all this nonsense.

Aye and the lame nature of the criticism and the protests probably encouraged them to push a bit more.

The more of this stuff the better. It will just show more and more people about what kind of football organisation they are. If people didn't know that by now.
This World Cup will be the start of their downfall, they have fecked up on the biggest stage and now there’s no where to hide now, it will take a few years but this is the start of it all.

Bloody hell, i know that this is emotional topic but some of you really need to work on logic thinking and stop mixing apples and oranges.
Their laws are morally shit and they should have never got this World cup. Also human rights are more important than football, of course. I think 100% of posters on this forum are on same page about all that.

BUT; if you are there and you go against some law (or you challenge their morale values) then you will be punished on this way or another. For them it is literally just as you said "Colours!! BAN HIM".
So again (and again); you have 3 options.
1.Follow state laws (as you do in your country)
2. Try to send a message and be prepared for punishment
3. Don't go fecking there

Fair comments mate I welcome constructive dialogue rather than childish name calling.

The thing is in their eyes their laws are just. I don't understand the uproar, it is so obvious that they don't tolerate this sort of stuff, so why after poking the bear in the eye throw the toys out the pram?

Absolutely. But for challenge you will get ban. It is how it is.
Today action should have been rainbow armband. Reaction on that should have been yellow card. Kane, Van Dijk and others said; "No way. It is not worth it".

Iranian players though...those are already biggest heroes of this World cup. For me at least. RESPECT!!

Basically this. In THEIR eyes it's proportionate and in OUR eyes isn't unexpected so why the uproar?

Fifa said they'd book captains in the tunnel before the game if they put on the one love armband.

Such a spineless organisation.

This is similar to the alcohol issue, first they said you can wear your pride colors, then it was it's probably best for your safety if you don't and it's now it's a outright ban.

If this was their stance from day one it would have been fine in a certain way but these feckers keep moving the goal post now that the tournament has started.

We don't know what FIFA has threatened those FAs with behind closed doors to be honest.

Even the yellow cards weren't confirmed were they?

It really sucks when you live in a country which has laws and have "laws".
Tbh, i would be shit-scared to even go as a tourist to countries with those type of laws. Not to mention to live there.

You don't understand the uproar? Really?

So you're not really brimming with empathy for the LGBT community?

Nobody complaining poked the Bear, which is one point of contention, 15 of the 22 who voted for it have either been investigated or banned from football.

Personally I think it's a bad look and very telling that you would frame hunan rights bssed protests as toy throwing.
