In terms of it not going through, was that because he rejected us as wanted to stay at PSV or PSV didn’t want to sell him or we we went for Antony instead and could not afford the both of them?
More so the latter. I think for United it was Antony or him, when it really should have been both. I think a normal club would have seen we needed another option and ronaldo needed to go in the summer.

He said himself he was disappointed cos it would have been good for him and his development. And he sees United as one of the biggest in the world.
He did turn down Leeds and Saints himself.

I think it was the latter. I think ETH had to choose either Gakpo or Antony and Antony was his 1st choice

Fair do’s. Well with Ronaldo now gone, hopefully there is a chance we could go back in for him in Jan.

I know this is now the secondary Gakpo thread, but about the game - it's a bit chaotic, isn't it? Not really any decent sequences of play, just a lot of running around and misplaced passes/early interventions. Even the goal came out of one of those.

Yeah chaotic is a good way to put it. Looks like it hasnt settled. I do hope Netherlands dont sit back looking for the counter but they are within their rights to do so.
Ecuador have been poor though.

Ugh, this result is now great for both teams. Ecuador gets an advantage in the final game and Netherlands gets through.

Competitively football has such an archaic group stage format.

That was very good defending by Van Dijk. Both of these are good teams. Still think these are the 2 getting out of this group.

Ecuador playing much better now on attack. Looking threatening down the wings

Is that 3 or 4 times in two minutes that Ecuador got a free assist from their left? Dumfries and Timber have to figure that side out, Ecuador keep having a guy in open space down there.

Wonder if there is a correlation with having less players with Van in their name and the Dutch team being worse.

This England USA game will become one hell of a decider for the group.

Assuming England win and go with their second string players to the final game it makes it so that all the other teams would have a chance qt qualification come the last gs day.

Spicy.

Is this the worst WC talent wise in a long time? Feels like apart from a few teams, most are full of average or ageing players. Dutch being a prime example.

What happened to Dutch talent they’ve got so many old average players on the pitch.
It's not a glorious generation by any means (although there are a good few strong players), but the team isn't that old, is it? Isn't that limited to Blind, Klaassen, and Van Dijk?

Ecuador are having fun on that right side. Timber and Dumfries are all over the place.

Depends where you look doesn't it?

England probably have the most talented squad we've had for years... same for Brazil.
