Day 6: Wales vs Iran | Qatar vs Senegal | Netherlands vs Ecuador | England vs USA

Sharing this because this is an amazing name for Pulisic.

I actually find that extremely offensive as an American as MAGA is a terrible movement and several of the members of the team speak out against the racism they show.

After not qualifying for 2018, I’m happy with the way we (USA) are looking. Young players, only Ream has played in a World Cup, so it’s positive signs we’ve rebuilt from the disastrous Klinsman era.
Thought we should have won today. I said before the match that England have better players and the USA has a better team, and this illustrated the point. Our midfield played through England with ease. Our problems are: missing our first choice CB pairing, and not bringing a striker to Qatar.
Adams MOTM.

People say Klinsmann was a disaster but he was really the one that encouraged young players to go to Europe more than anyone else before. He definitely had a positive impact in that regard.

Except Puli was rocking a MAGA hat and has spoken positively about Trump.

I've moaned about England, so let me get to the US fans - do you'll seriously not having anyone better than Zimmermann? You barely had to defend all game and it still looked like he was going to make a mistake any second.

A good young American CB to watch out for is Chris Richards who recently went to Crystal Palace from Bayern. Injured at the moment though. Miles Robinson is a proper player too and his injuries were a blow even in qualifying itself, think he would have made a move to Europe had it not been for that.

I'll never understand why Pulusic does not start more often for Chelsea. He is quality. Adam's and Musah were better tonight though.

And you just know England will be 1-0 up or level it at 1-1, before succumbing to a 3-1 loss.
There will be an English player who cracks under pressure too, leading to a brain fart and a mistake that allows France to capitalise - resulting in a barrage of online abuse.

Who votes on these things??? Adams was clearly the best US player on the pitch tonight. De Bruyne was probably onto something the other day about biggest/known name.

FDJ was motm in the Netherlands game as well which was bizzare but I think it's fan voted.

Please post a pic of him in a maga hat or quote him saying positive things about Trump. I've just done a Google search and can't find anything. The only political statement i could find was him saying he didn't even vote in 2016.

I'm pretty sure he's never done either but happy to be proved wrong.

Can’t find a pic of the hat. I may be misremembering and just posted a pic of one. During the Trump years he liked quite a few tweets and instagram posts that were disappointing. There was one about shooting “antifa protesters”, one moaning about tax increases, etc. All I could find were people, at the time, talking about his posts/likes being disappointing. It seems a lot of that has been cleaned up so feel free to not believe me.

There's no pics of him wearing a Maga hat or quotes from him saying positive stuff about Trump so yeah, I don't believe you that he did either.

That kinda stuff would be everywhere online.

Again, all that is left are stories about his likes. This was a topic of discussion of some interest by us US soccer fans at the time as it was disappointing to see our next star do these things, especially since some of his teammates are quite active politically.

Hell, we talked about it here over a year ago:

It is hard to believe how much guns play a role in a individual's identity in the states. Let people live their lives the way they want, nobody is out there to get them.

Why wouldn’t Pulisic be a fan of Trump? He isn’t a niche figure over there

Player ratings from the Guardian
England (4-3-3)

Jordan Pickford (GK) Relieved to see the USAspurn three big chances in the first half. Kept a clean sheet. 6
Kieran Trippier (RB)
Ropey in possession and unusually shaky defensively. Lack of quality in attack was a concern. 5

John Stones (CB)
Could have helped England by being more assertive in possession. Important block on Haji Wright. 6

Harry Maguire (CB)
The big centre-back was one of England’s better players. Headed a lot of dangerous crosses away. 7

Luke Shaw (LB)
Struggled to contain the USA’s surges down the right and his delivery was disappointing. 6
Declan Rice (CM)
Overrun in defensive midfield and predictable on the ball. It was not his best evening. 5

Jude Bellingham (CM)
The teenager was not as influential this time. Positioning was suspect and was deservedly replaced. 5

Mason Mount (CM)
A few sloppy touches disrupted some England attacks. Failed to match the USA’s energy. 5

Bukayo Saka (RW)
Caused problems early on but the USA got a grip of him. Became less effective. 6

Harry Kane (CF)
The captain should have given England an early lead. Dropped deep but made little impact. 6
Raheem Sterling (LW)
Made a chance for Mount but was rarely involved. Could not complain about going off. 5

Substitutes
Jordan Henderson (for Bellingham, 69): Helped England’s midfield with his experience and leadership. 7;
Jack Grealish (for Sterling, 68): His trickery gave Gregg Berhalter’s side more to think about. 6;
Marcus Rashford (for Saka, 78): Replaced Saka during the dying stages. 6

————-

Turner (GK) A sharp save from Mount kept the game level at half-time. Solid handling and decent distribution. 7

Sergiño Dest (RB)
Shackled Sterling and Shaw for long spells and worried England with his overlapping runs.

Tim Ream (CB) The Fulham centre-back continued his impressive form. Managed to repel Kane’s clever through balls. 7

Walker Zimmerman (CB)
A goal-saving block from a Kane shot allowed his side to grow into the game. 7

Antonee Robinson (LB)
Tested by Saka and Bellingham but recovered from a nervy start. Slightly careless in possession. 6

Tyler Adams (CM)
A controlled, efficient presence in a deep position. He passed well and made some important interceptions. 8

Yusuf Musah (CM)
The former England youth international was understandably eager to impress. Lively and energetic in possession. 8

Weston McKennie (CM)
Wasted a great chance but the Juventus player dominated midfield with his driving runs. 8

Timothy Weah (RW)
Crossed for McKennie to miss from close range. George Weah’s son was a bright spark. 7

Haji Wright (CF)
The big striker worked hard and glanced a header wide. Looked raw around the edges. 6

Christian Pulisic (LW)
Chelsea winger hit the bar and headed wide. His intelligence and pace caught the eye. 7

Substitutes
Brenden Aaronson (for McKennie, 77): A decent replacement for the tiring McKennie. 6;
Shaquell Moore (for Dest, 78): Came on for the exhausted Dest. 6;
Josh Sargent (for Wright, 83): Replaced Wright when the striker ran out of puff. 6;
Giovanni Reyna (for Weah, 83): On too late to make an impact. 6

Tonight reminded me so much of Scotland in the Euros,another dour Friday night draw on ITV.

The first seven passes of the game set the tempo: Mount kicks off back to Stones, followed by 3 iterations of Stones to Maguire to Stones. Possession play at its finest.

I mean 45 per cent of America (voters) is red. Out of that even if you exclude some that are republican but don't like Trump you'd have at at least 35 per cent. It's not the outrageous thing it used to be made out to be really. A lot of America was in favour Trump otherwise he wouldn't have become their Prez.

England were good in the opening game but going by this one they spend too much time with the ball passing it about among defenders. Mainly because their central midfielders are not great on the ball.

My god you think it’s disappointing that someone doesn’t want to pay more taxes

England was poor as mentioned but the US didn't look that good either, except the midfield. USA midfield was great but the attack looked toothless and can't see them scoring on anyone decent. Pulisic is so overhyped I can't like him.

Ecuador looked great in the 2nd half and I still like my pick of them going through. Netherlands, like England, lacked ideas and looked stale.

Senegal looked solid but it was against the worst WC side of the modern era.

Iran looked good at the end, Wales looks past it. Mostly a disappointing slate of matches today.

Tripper has been pretty poor.

Yeah he had another poor game. TAA should have been played before him, Walker if he’d been fit aswell is a better choice. Don’t know what happened to KT as he has been really good for Newcastle.

Even against Iran I thought he was one of our worst performers despite the praise, just constantly seemed to give the ball away. Not saying Trent would have performed, but neither him nor foden really seeing the pitch in the last two games is a travesty at this level.

Honestly don’t know if this is true… BUT a midfield of Musah, Adams, and Mckennie is much much better than people probably think.
It is also a very well balanced midfield. Great mix of aggression, ball retention, and box to box runners. I suppose it could do with a bit more creativity, although I think Musah has more to show in that area in the future. Absolutely miles ahead of anything we have ever put out in recent memory.
