Unless his thinking is bring on a fresh Rashford to got at Senegal, I don't get it.

Heck even if that is the logic, he is in form, why drop him?

ANyway, Mbappe was world class. ANd Poland rightback wasn't that bad. Cheeky bid? ;)

THis game just prove, if you have superior players and good tactic, you don't need to do much of "high press". Giroud and Mbappe were hardly pressing up front, weren't they?

I don't know why he can't play Saka and Rashford out wide, and move Foden into a central position.
That would require dropping mount which is frankly never happening under Southgate

Saka over Rashford isn't a big deal, Saka is class.

If he's continuing to drop Sterling then that's the bigger deal - Sterling offers nothing in the build up.

Play to your strengths. Giroud simply cannot press and I highly doubt Bop it is going to have himself press when he is literally one man teaming the opposition currently. That being said, I still don’t see France winning it without Benzema.

As a non English this is probably what weirds me out the most about Southgates decisions. Mount is s decent player but when you have the offensive talent you guys have he shouldn't be any where near the starting lineup.
It's not like he is that good for England?
Maguire at least almost always plays really well for England so his inclusion makes sense.

Saka's a great player. I'd understand the outrage a bit more if it was Sterling confirmed starting. England have great depth in the attacking positions. Grealish has also been excellent so far. Southgate would get criticism regardless of who he started.

He isn't one man teaming.
Mbappe was great, but so were Giroud,Varane, and Griezmann.

He is not going to play with a 10 and I don’t see CM as a good place for Foden. That being said I do not believe Mount should be there either but hey, we aren’t Muppets like the manager.

I think it's probably the flexibility he offers them. He's a good presser too. Maybe makes Southgate feel a bit more secure about England defensively than if he was playing Foden in the centre. I don't think Mount is a bad player either tbh. He's not as talented as some of England's other attacking options but I'd love to have him in the Irish team for example.

Nobody else understands it either really. There is obviously something Southgate loves about him (maybe he brings him an apple before training)

I wouldn't even mind if he's chipping in with goals/assists but he rarely does.

People defending Southgate for the Rashford decision really don't understand even the basics of man management.
Southgate has proven again and again that his favourites will be selected over well performing players. No better way to kill the motivation of players trying to get into the squad.

What does Rashford have to do to be a starter then?

Take Mbappe's 2 worldies out it and France were average. Can he do that game after game?
Griezmann is playing very well though.
Senegal has a real chance in the QF.

Again. I remember Sir Alex Ferguson dropping Carlos Tevez after he scored four, from a quick google he also got an assist for our other goal of the game.

Must have been a shit manager

Someone on here said it really succinctly in the last tournament. He picks his forward players based on their ability to defend, unless we are playing cannon fodder. Just Southgate in a nutshell that. Still this will get labelled as ‘understanding tournament football’ for the apologists.

Whatever. Rashford not playing means chances of injury are significantly reduced which benefits us in the long run. I’m happy to let him come off the bench 10 minutes to go at 0-0, grab the glory with a goal and peace out :p

Tevez was a starter under Fergie mate.

It's a different thing resting a starter after a good performance, and dropping a sub that is your best performing player at the moment, in a knock out game.

Stop with the moronic defense of Southgate, the man has issues.

He's the most in form goal scorer on the planet and has been so the past 2 months, especially for France. 16 goals in his past 14 matches or something like that....so yes, right now he's doing that game after game.
