If any goalkeeper better than De Gea is bought in this window then Ten Hag will go up in my book.

We need a GK that fits our new style of play and its abundantly clear that De Gea, not only concerning his other clear weakness, isn't upto the task.

All for this.

We should be all over this. I'd be so disappointed if we can't convince him because we think De Gea is no. 1. If we are sticking to DDG because of his big contract there's no need to do this with just 1 year left and we are in the Europa League. He'd get plenty of game time

I would wank myself into delirium if that happens tbh

He is already a legend in Switzerland and one of the most likeable players to ever play for the nationalteam.

But as I said above, he will not come as Nr.2. We have the Worldcup coming up where he will be Switzerlands undoubted Nr. 1. And he will want to play regularly before it.

As for his strenghtes: Brilliant with his feed. Very good distribution. Good shootstopper. Commands his defence very well. And he is a very smart & good looking young man who has normaly a very good media & fan relationship.

Weaknesses: Is not the biggest Goalie, so maybe on setpieces this could be a challenge in the PL. & he has the odd howler in him. But on the biggest stages he always delivery.
I’m sold.

Just set a Bundesliga record today by making 19 saves vs Bayern. He is so much better than DDG now it's completely understandable why he is not willing to come here and be his deputy.

Could we go back in for him in January/next summer but this time give him the number 1 spot? Or should we target a younger GK instead?

We should've offered him the number 1 position, De Gea's status in the team is undeserved at this point.

I don't disagree but here I don't think we were paying No.1 GK wages. But that's just my speculation.
Wouldn't be the first case of United offering a different status to a player and therefore a lower wage than another club. Bellingham at Dortmund comes to mind, who made the far better offer to him than United.

I've always been impressed with him whenever I've seen him. Would presumably be the end of De Gea, too good to be a backup you'd think? Doubt we'd announce it in Jan if so but could be wrong.

Replacing De Gea with a 2 year older keeper. It sounds a bit unlikely but I guess goalies should be able to play into their 40's in this day and age. As long as they take care of them selves and reflexes and desire is still intact.

Same age van der Sar was when we signed him.

Right. Also low risk - he'd be on a free and he'd probably be on less than half of De Gea. If it doesn't work out, can sign another keeper in a year or two without having to worry about recouping a transfer fee. Plus we have enough other holes that not having to use part of our budget on a keeper would be great.

I'd be happy with this. He always plays well when I've seen him play for Switzerland. I recall he's had a few blinders against Bayern too.

Ye would also be nice to have a keeper that is good on penalties! How is Sommer on setpieces, corners etc? One more weakness of De Gea that has bothered me for years.

If ETH rates him then let’s get him. He always looks sturdy for Switzerland in big tournaments.

About to turn 34 which is still prime years in goalie lifespans. We got Edwin when he was 34.

He's a level below United, would be good for a club like Spurs who are contending for Europe but don't necessarily have title aspirations, but for a club like United he would be too inconsistent and infuritate the fans. A slightly worse version of Lloris is a comparison I come up with in terms of how he can be a world class goalkeeper one day and then drop a clanger that costs the game the next.

Would be really disappointed if we go for him.

it's clear that ten Hag rates him and thinks he fits his prefered style a lot better than De Gea. Cheap and no risk at all, so why not.

Keepers are in a bit of a weird bubble in terms of judging their playing ability because they’re not the traditional outfielder. Some good keepers find themselves playing at lesser clubs than their ability actually is, and could play for much better teams.

Back in 2005, it probably seemed weird and ridiculous that we were going for the Fulham No.1 who had previously failed at Juve, and it’d been a long time since his Ajax days.

But hey, gives us a reason all the more to watch the Portugal vs Switzerland game tomorrow

Was literally about to ask that question - how old was VDS when we signed him.

Yep, definitely looks like ETH rates him very highly considering we were after him in the summer as well. I wonder if Dubravka will now be sent back to Newcastle in January?
