The debate really is no longer on is it?
To most of the footballing world it was never really much of a debate; Messi has always been the significantly more talented footballer. It's only the nutters who call themselves United and Sporting fans on this forum who kept the debate going

Not even remotely comparable. What Messi brilliantly did to Gvardiol there, Maradona did several times a game, every game.
But what Messi did there he was also doing several times a game in his prime. Like that was the most standout part of his game for a decade.

You'd think that skinning defenders wasnt his trademark in his prime.

Maybe in your opinion. As far as masses go theres no such widespread opinion that holds Messi as the outright better player.
Messi has the most goals and assists combined in club football history, most world player of the year wins, insane amount of league titles and 3 arguably 4 Champions league titles. Pretty much the best player in the world for a 10 year period. He is soon to become the number 1 for goals scored in football history, and already holds the most assists in football history.

Just because Maradona was able to go one game further in 1 World Cup game makes him better? Literally 1 game when Messi has played over 1000. Copa America win that Maradona doesn't have. Got Argentina to a second World Cup final.

Maradona also only has 3 league titles in his entire career. People are clutching at straws if they think Maradona is better.

Key difference is the one you don't think matters. Maradona carried the team to a win. All that matters.
However Messi has Maradona completely trumped on total trophies won in their careers, both team and individual ones.

Yep. It's been clear for a decade.

Introvert is a bit mild but we are talking about someone we haven't met so I don't really have a strong opinion on this.
Well i wouldn't be surprised if those hgh injections didnt turn him psycho somehow.

For Barca, not Argentina in a WC which is the specific comparison here.
Not really my specific comparison. I said it was no longer a debate as Messi has now lead Argentina to 2 finals (once as a good player and this one as their by far best player). He simply has now done enough at World Cups that I don't believe that ultimately winning ones matters. Or else we can start picking apart Maradona's club career and at that point if we compare their overall careers and achievements it becomes a complete mismatch.

Who cares about "total trophies"? One world cup for most players is far more valuable than multiple trophies at club level. It's by far the proudest moment for pretty much any player who has ever won it.

To be fair, a massive allure to Diego is that he was full on into the 80's excess too - drunk, coked up and partying with the mob. Messi could never.

A lot of people here no doubt watching this World Cup masterclass through gritted teeth.
So many people starting to clutch at straws because they don't want to admit the truth that Messi is the greatest of all time. That would mean they have been proved wrong and most people cannot admit when they were wrong.

Explains why Kleberson never turned up for us. Already won it all

For me it's impossible to crown one footballer as the undisputed GOAT but I can fairly say with ease that he's the best I've ever watched in my lifetime. It's not even a debate

Pele had a great club career too yet people still compare Maradona to him quite favourably a lot of the times too.

Completely disagree. If he doesn't win this one his Argentina career won't be considered better than Diego's (he also reached in another final in case you missed after winning one).

Yup. Which is why I find it so strange to hear loads of people disagree with this opinion who are far too young to have ever watched the other contenders for that crown.

EDIT: Not to mention that football was less televised back in the day. We’ve all probably watched Messi at least twice as much as even the most devout Maradonna fan watched him in the 80s.

Same, he is so far ahead of any player I've seen in my lifetime bar Maradona it's not even close. Maradona was the greatest I'd seen until I saw Messi who has surpassed Diego in my eyes whatever happens on Sunday.
