Who cares about "total trophies"? One world cup for most players is far more valuable than multiple trophies at club level. It's by far the proudest moment for pretty much any player who has ever won it.
Fair enough, I don't put as much value on winning a World Cup I guess. I've just heard it used as a stick to beat Messi with for a long time and surely at this point his performances at World Cups can no longer be doubted with this one and in 2014.

For me it's impossible to crown one footballer as the undisputed GOAT but I can fairly say with ease that he's the best I've ever watched in my lifetime. It's not even a debate
Same here.

He did that at 35 on such a big occasion vs what the majority thinks has been the best defender in the tournament.

That's just random internet bullshit. Anyone who thinks about downplaying his career shouldn't call themselves a football fan.

Nail on head.

I’d go so far as to say he is probably the best I’ll ever see in my life time. Hard to imagine someone coming along and doing what he’s done over his entire career. Hope I’m wrong though. Makes me a bit sad watching these games knowing they’re some of his last.

All I can say is I'm happy that you disagree.
Yeah, because you think result oriented thinking gets you anywhere. Which is probably why you're getting nowhere.

Has Keane finally turned on Ronaldo? Keane actually hoping he wins the World Cup to “put the icing on the cake” on his career.

One more game Messi. You beautiful beautiful man.

Completely disagree. If he doesn't win this one his Argentina career won't be considered better than Diego's (he also reached in another final in case you missed after winning one).
My point was on who is the greatest and I simply rate what Messi has achieved for Argentina and his clubs overall to be more than Maradona did for Argentina and his clubs. I agree that Messi needs to win the whole thing to be held in or near the same regard as Maradona is for Argentina.

In a different era. It's impossible to fully compare.
Yes, it was far more difficult in Diego's era, far more protection in the modern era.

He deserves his WC. It’s just a shame we wouldn’t have a live feed from Piers Morgan’s house of Cristiano’s tears.

Messi has the most goals and assists combined in club football history, most world player of the year wins, insane amount of league titles and 3 arguably 4 Champions league titles. Pretty much the best player in the world for a 10 year period. He is soon to become the number 1 for goals scored in football history, and already holds the most assists in football history.

Just because Maradona was able to go one game further in 1 World Cup game makes him better? Literally 1 game when Messi has played over 1000. Copa America win that Maradona doesn't have. Got Argentina to a second World Cup final.

Maradona also only has 3 league titles in his entire career. People are clutching at straws if they think Maradona is better.
You don't seem to have a clue about the era of Maradona, or if you do, you're posting dishonestly. Either way, it doesn't reflect well on your post.

That's just rubbish though. There were a lot of plodders around in those days. There's far more athleticism and fitness in todays games, it's higher paced and more difficult to dribble through teams like Messi does

The debate really is no longer on is it?
The solution to a problem lies in the disappearance of the problem, to loosely quote Wittgenstein. The answer to the question Who is the greatest? occurs when the question ceases to be asked.

I think it’s massively to Ronaldo’s credit that he made it a conversation. But ultimately, for me at least, he could never bridge the gap in actual ability between the two.

Messi brings a magic, a genius, a ‘how did he do that!?’…that Ronaldo never did (outside of goal scoring). With Ronaldo it was often ‘Wow!’, but with Messi it was ‘How!’

Yup. Which is why I find it so strange to hear loads of people disagree with this opinion who are far too young to have ever watched the other contenders for that crown.

EDIT: Not to mention that football was less televised back in the day. We’ve all probably watched Messi at least twice as much as even the most devout Maradonna fan watched him in the 80s.
And I'd even say more than twice

What a leader. Brilliant.

Even if some other players have found their form, like Julian Alvarez, Messi IS Argentina.

No one deserves one unless they win it. I'm praying Mbappe will crash this party.
I fear he will, with a much better supporting cast and 12 years younger... hoping ziyech and co crash mbappe's party first.

France are a stronger team, Mbappe doesn't even have to show up for France to win they have 4-5 match winners in the XI.

Messi has to show up for Argentina to perform.

Sorry but that is no true. Football have involved and is harder as it goes. Messi is better player. Maradona was artist and class. Messi, since his debut, have been from another planet.

Yeah it’s swings and roundabouts. Modern attacking players don’t have to deal with shocking pitches and brutal tackles but they’re up against incredibly well coached and organised defences full of athletes who are miles fitter, stronger and quicker than the average defender that Maradonna was playing against.

Not when they can just clear you out and barely get a yellow card.

This really isn't true.
France have been handicapped by missing at least 4 bona-fide starters through injury and have been far from full strenth while Argentina are at full strength.

Alvarez literally just had a hand in all their goals now including two direct involvements without Messi, I'm not sure how you can state that Messi has to show up for them to perform when key players have stepped up in every round from the goalkeeper through to the striker.
