So who is up for another winter World Cup? | It's actually autumn | When does winter start?

As long as it's scheduled properly, I don't really care. I'm already used to the Rugby World cup being between September and mid November.

PS: It's an Autumn WC, not Winter.
I'd say it straddles Autumn/Winter. Winter just sounded better...

This isn't a statement that can or should be debated. The World Cup has been entirely in Autumn and will never see Winter unless the final was postponed. :)

Absolutely yes! It's been brilliant and we need cycling between summer and winter world cups

Football everyday in this dark shitty winter.. Yes please.

Same here, I didn't mind it too much.

I kind of liked being able to watch the evening games without the guilt of thinking I'd be better off doing something outside while it's still bright.

No.

More than anyone else, World Cups should be for kids. Some of the best memories I have of being a football fan are those early World Cups that seemed to dominate the entire summer and got me properly addicted to football.

Scheduling World Cups at points in the year where it's harder for kids to watch the games is pretty much anti-football to my mind. It should be on during their school break.

You're right, Winter officially begins next Wednesday for us northern hemisphere folk. I know it's been bitterly cold in a lot of places recently, but that's just a bad Autumn!

I much prefer a summer tournament but I've also come to acknowledge the arrogance of us Europeans thinking it should always be tailor-made to our calendar. If you want other parts of the world to be able to host the World Cup, it's the best solution sometimes.

Loved it, especially with these kick off times. Totally up for another one.

I haven't minded it. As some others here have said, it was nice at times to watch football from a sunny warm place during a dark dreary time of the year where I live.

However, there's something even more special about a summer WC.

I would also want the schedule that's best for the players.

December is not autumn. Most of the WC days have been in December.

Don’t you work the same hours in the summer?

I’m not sure that it’s actually playing out as expected. Seems to be a relative success.

The next one seems much more problematic to me.
Yes I do but the games are later in summer world cups generally with afternoon to evening and the last game is later than 7pm

This thread reminds of a John Mulaney joke about that annoying kid on movie nights who, when someone says they watched some good movies tonight, will correct them, saying: "Don't you mean last night, it's after midnight?" Mid-December is fecking winter.

yeah that’s why here we don’t like football that much in Argentina, every single World Cup has been in the winter

It's not. It's one of the few things that are extremely simple and not debatable. Winter is from December 21st to March 20th, that's the case every year. If we can't even agree on that something is wrong.

Fair play for actually coming out to say this, unlike several others amongst us who've got their heads buried in their northern hemispherean sand.

The astronomical season, yes.

In the meteorological season, Winter begins on December 1st.

And it's more accurate when you factor in the weather. March is not winter.
It's not more accurate it's easier but not more accurate. There is also one big issue with the way it is described which kind of tells you that someone messed up, meterorologically you can't cleanly divide earth in two hemisphere with 4 seasons. It's a strangely unscientific eurocentric idea.

Meteorological winter is more relevant
Its relevance is irrelevant for this debate.

Do a Google search, it'll come up in big letters as the 21st December. When we talk about the seasons changing, it's always based on vernal equinox, summer solstice, autumnal equinox and winter solstice.

Actually there are countless sources online that say Winter starts December 1st and runs for December/January/February and I personally go with that - would never call midMarch Winter, which it is if you go by solstice/equinox

Anyway on the more important point of another Winter World Cup, I am in 2 minds about it

Initially I was dead set against the move to a Winter World Cup due to the disruption to the usual club calendar - in the end it has been a nice bonus at what is traditionally one of the more depressing times of the year as it gets dark/cold

Plus I do like to see the World Cup in different part of the world and there are some places which cant host in June/July due to the heat, I remember England wilting in the summer heat out in Japan '02 and no doubt it is going to be absolutely roasting at some venues in 2026

Hell no... going downtown in the warm summer for a cold beer, wearing shorts and t-shirt and just sit down to enjoy the WC. Yesterday we had -18 degrees here, that cold beer just doesn't taste as good
