It is very American but just a quick way of saying it.Nothing personal.
Portugal of the last 5 years have had a better team than this Argentina team. This Argentina team is actually bang average and winning the world cup with that team is surprising.Saying that winning for Portugal is more difficult than doing it for a team that is a regular contender in every major international trophy is not clutching at straws…it’s a literal fact.
Unless you choose to ignore it or simply don’t understand the game.
Apologies, meant to say their top scorer.??

It would not be true to say that the whole world was willing Messi on to win the game. Opposing him were a coalition of the French, many non-Argentine South Americans, Real Madrid fans, Cristiano Ronaldo stans, professional contrarians, and other assorted sickos, perverts and desperadoes who for different twisted reasons hate the ideas of happiness, completeness and justice.
Apologies, I meant to say their top scorer. He wasn't. He was 3 goals behind Griezmann
3 goals, As many as Nani.Yeah heavy contribution. He was the top scorer in the tournament
He scored in 2 games. 2 against Hungary and 1 in the Semi final against Wales. He contributed for sure but he was joint top scorer for Portugal with Nani who scored in 3 games.Apologies, meant to say their top scorer.
Not that 3 is a great total, but you can't say he didn't contribute when he was too scorer for his team.
I think he has an incredible huge mountain to climb, and luck always plays a part too, but I absolutely don't underestimate the chance Mbappe can get close to Ronnie and Messi. It's not about the technical side of Mbappe, think he showed enough already in that regard that's he's quite good, but the "kid" has Ronnie has his idol and I wouldn't be surprised he's a mentality freak, too, which I think it's going to be a 100% requisite for new players to achieve at least Ronaldo's level. We spend hundreds of pages trying to undermine one of the two saying they buckle under pressure, when in reality we just forget the insane effort both have made mentally and psychologically to achieve what they have, and that's a part of their career we underrate.I don't underestimate it. I just don't casually write it off so much. Form, fitness, mentality and well luck are all key. It's also a mountain I'd like to see climbed... who doesn't? Football greatness won't just stop with Messi and Ronaldo retiring. Records are there to be broken.
Is being your countries top scorer in a competition not contributing?3 goals, As many as Nani.Yeah heavy contribution.
Messi has played every single minute of all the Argentina games and I dont think he has had one bad match.
By no means am I saying it was a vintage or even good tournament but if you're your contries top scorer, you've contributed. So if someone says you didn't, it's wrong. He scored in 2 games. 2 against Hungary and 1 in the Semi final against Wales. He contributed for sure but he was joint top scorer for Portugal with Nani who scored in 3 games.
Portugal beat France in France in the EC 2016 with the usual suspect cheerleading outside the pitch getting all the credit despite zero contribution in the final, such a fraud..If you or any other person think winning something for Argentina is more impressive then Ronaldo for Portugal then this is pointless.
It’s like saying Haaland should have the same level of success as Mbappe even though he plays for fecking norway.
The point is clear and Obvious, if you’re lucky to be born in a contending country then you have an advantage. If Ronaldo was Brazilian would he not most likely have multiple copas and a World Cup? Obviously.
If Messi was Spanish he would have 1 World Cup and 2 euros. Is it cause Messi is the goat Or because those nations are so stacked?
This is very simple.
Exactly. You're dead on, there. The AFA has a more competent structure than our Portuguese FA despite their consistent failures in results until last year, the staff, the players, always have this passion and drive and desire we don't, and our team has been led by a football coach that has a Ferrari in his hand and doesn't know how to drive it. Sure he did win the Euro 2016, but I know the football we played in that tournament. Argentina definitely has worse *players* than ours over the last I'd say 5 years, but I have to say, in the end, they are absolutely a better team than us despite their shortcomings. Some things other than players and technical ability are more important to a National Team's success, and Argentina built some of that before Scaloni, and the final part of it with Scaloni. I'd honestly take the AFA over the Portuguese FA any day of the week.Portugal of the last 5 years have had a better team than this Argentina team. This Argentina team is actually bang average and winning the world cup with that team is surprising.
Deary me this is tragic. The weirdest part is you’re Portuguese but are willing to make stuff up and shit on the rest of your countries footballers past and present to present your country as some sort of shitty minnow in an attempt to elevate a player you’re obviously deeply in love with look at Portugal at Euro 2000 for fecks sakes. So first off I want to congratulate Lionel Messi. Amazing achievement.
Secondly I admire your attempt of trying to throw a jab, it was cute. You wanted my attention so I’ll give you it for a little bit
So I will just end it with this because it’s very simple and not even questionable.
I know it’s Messi’s day but this is unquestionable. Ronaldo won the second most important international trophy with a country that has zero international history.
This World Cup was only the third time Portugal ever got passed the R16. Ronaldo is the first Portuguese player to ever played passed the R16. That’s how little history we have.
What Ronaldo did for Portugal will always mean more then what Messi did for Argentina because Portugal before Ronaldo won nothing and achieved nothing.
Argentina has won a lot before Messi and they will continue to win a lot without him. That to me is the difference.
So denouncing him the “goat “ because of this win is honestly silly.
Winning a World Cup is a lottery on if you are born into one of the sports super powers. Argentine made 2 of the last 3 World Cup finals. Portugal have only made it passed the R16 3x…in every WC ever.
Put Ronaldo in the teams argentina and Messi have had and their is a very much likely possibility they have more copas and would have won the World Cup earlier.
I’ll let you celebrate your day because now you can attempt to finally say Messi surpassed Ronaldo but just had to give you that lovely dose of reality. You can tell how excited you were because you felt the need to gloat.
Enjoy the win, congrats to Lionel Messi, congrats to Argentina, and congrats to every Argentine in the forum. Argentina were one of the favorites to win the tournament and they proved it. Fantastic team and well done !
It's called an opinion, learn to deal with it.Terrible post, could you cry any louder?
Firstly I don't need too given I know what a drug cheat he was, I used him as an example of someone who had average players around him in 86 and won it, messi has decent top players around him to help, as to me the goat is and will always be the guy who won it 3 times, including two back to back Pele. You badly need to read a maradona bio if those are your criteria.
There really is no trophy in all of sports that can come close to the beauty of the World Cup. It's stunning.
Friendly? Because this never happened in official games. I'm not even sure Isco has ever played in a game where both scored....I went to see a classico where Isco was the best player on the pitch
Messi And Ronaldo scored though. What a day that was!
Yeah, I’ve just realised I’ve misread the majority of this thread. I incorrectly assumed Sporting was on the wind up.Aston villa
rosario
Tottenham
Benfica
Lyon
Brighton
Atletico
Benfica
juventus
Man city
that’s the clubs the starting XI played for.
reduced to unprovable hypothesizing.Messi would never win a euro with Portugal that’s the difference. Ronaldo in argentina would have multiple.
levels.
Didn't leave Barcelona to elevate another team, not as good as Barcelona. But even then it's nit picking. I am a stern Maradona fan but today I admit Messi is better than him. It's not as though Messi was a passenger, he deservedly won man of the tournament.Yep, no achievement is held above him anymore. I can’t even think of any argument that can go against him.
A pathetic attempt to make out that Portugal has no football history just to defend a guy who is in the eyes of all sane and rational people the second best player of his generation. So first off I want to congratulate Lionel Messi. Amazing achievement.
Secondly I admire your attempt of trying to throw a jab, it was cute. You wanted my attention so I’ll give you it for a little bit

It would take a herculean effort to match Ronaldo, but it is possible barring injuries and maintaining an elite level concentration. I don't think he has it in him to match Messi precisely because he falls short in the same area as Ronaldo does when comparing to Messi, which is creativity. Messi is just flat out better. So much so that his assists records are historical. And to reach that you need a level of vision and passing ability that I don't think he has.I think he has an incredible huge mountain to climb, and luck always plays a part too, but I absolutely don't underestimate the chance Mbappe can get close to Ronnie and Messi. On some level I’ve got to respect the commitment to the bit. Top work.So first off I want to congratulate Lionel Messi. Amazing achievement.

Don't get me.wrong, I hope someone.like this comes along rather sooner than later as well The fact that there were fluid transitions between Maradona, R9 and Messi gives me hope we'll soon see a prodigy of comparable talent. I just don't believe it is Mbappe, as good as he is.I don't underestimate it. I just don't casually write it off so much. Form, fitness, mentality and well luck are all key. It's also a mountain I'd like to see climbed... who doesn't? Football greatness won't just stop with Messi and Ronaldo retiring. Records are there to be broken.
and if it wasn’t for Messi, Argentina would have lost to both teams in regulation. Period. If it wasn’t for emi argentina lose to the Dutch and to France. That save in the 120 minute won argentina the world cup.
face it man, Messi killed the debate. It’s over. Pepe had a bigger impact in euro 2016 than Ronaldo did. Griezman was player of the tournament. This WC Messi was inarguably Argentina’s best player. So first off I want to congratulate Lionel Messi. Amazing achievement.

Kinda hard to do much in a final when you get crocked inside 20 minutes and can't carry on. That is a ridiculous pot shot.Portugal beat France in France in the EC 2016 with the usual suspect cheerleading outside the pitch getting all the credit despite zero contribution in the final, such a fraud..
Imagine thinking Ronaldo won EC in 2016 alone when he was not even the best player of Portugal in that tournament with zero contribution in the final against the first proper team Portugal faced, France..
0 assist + 0 goals in 8 knock-out games in 5 WCs says it all about this fraud
Agree to disagree.face it man, Messi killed the debate. It’s over. Pepe had a bigger impact in euro 2016 than Ronaldo did. Griezman was player of the tournament. This WC Messi was inarguably Argentina’s best player.
people remember world cups FAR more than euros. Can’t be the GOAT with 0 assists and 0 goals in World Cup knockouts. It’s not a jab, but Ronaldo dies in this debate.
