I’m So So impressed that Ten Hag didn’t go in for Gakpo.

I feel like he knows the quality of player he wants to bring to our clubs weaker areas.

Thanks a lot Ten Hag!

He chose Antony in the summer over gakpo.

I think that should tell you all you need to know.

People saying rashford is better than him…he is only 22 and has been putting up better stats than rashford ever has. And for a side struggling to score goals, we could have used him tbh.
At Netherlands.
Rashford is far more established and proven than Gakpo. Rashford would score goals for fun at Netherlands

I keep seeing people saying this as if they are in anyway similar players. We’ve been crying out for a right winger for literally years. Especially a left footed right winger who could provide balance to the team. Antony provides this. Gakpo is not a right winger, and playing him there would just be another case of shoehorning a player into a position that’s not his just for the sake of it.

It’s a stupid comparison. It was never Antony or Gakpo, rather Antony AND (?) Gakpo last summer.

Wasn't convinced that he was the right player for us, so kind of glad we didn't pull the trigger with this one.

Summary of this thread:

Before Liverpool signing…he’s not good enough. Extremely overrated. Could never raise to the level of the Prem. He’s soft…

After Liverpool signing…we lost out again. Terrible recruitment. We will never get quality players. He’ll score 20+ in the Prem. Exactly the type of player we needed…

Remember when people on Caf moaned "we should have signed him" when Liverpool signed Nunez? Nunez went on to win BallonDor and scored 15 goals in one World Cup. They knew what they were talking about and this time they will be proven right again.

So glad liverpool got this hypejob. Wish they had done us a favour and got antony as well in the summer. There are much better players out there

fomoing at its best

I also think that if we didn’t believe he’s a number 9 that having another LW when we are trying to develop and extend garnacho longterm might not have been the smartest move. We already have plenty of players that can play on the left. So it all came down to whether ETH believed Gapko can be the number 9 we need or not, and when you consider the fact that ten hag and gakpo have the same agent, I think the answer is pretty clear.

It's all good. He's decent but not next level.
Right. Because our squad is full of "next level" players and we didn't need him for a low price of £37 fecking millions? That is what's up :)

You know, if there was any chance we are gonna buy somebody much better in Jan, I am sure people here would be less bitter, but 99% of us believe we will not get anything close to Gakpo, which is why people are pissed. That and also - losing out to Liverpool, always stings. It is a United forum, after all.

Not arsed at all. We don't need another LW, let alone one that goes missing in every big game for club and country and doesn't seem to really have the physical attributes needed to shine in the PL as a winger/forward.

The only worry would be that Liverpool seem to get a clear cut chance from every aimless hoof up the field, and the one thing he clearly can do is finish.

Antony is a RW, Gapko is a LW/STk. We needed a RW because Sancho needed his safe space

We'll get Felix on loan and the caf will cream themselves.

I think that he is fairing better then the yet another expensive Dortmund piece of junk we have bought

Personally I’m glad we didn’t get him, not sure he’s needed at the moment, our priority should be a striker if we’re to gain a CL spot this season.

Wow. So Cody has finally made his big money move.
I thought his nailed on going to United.
Probably because Marcus on the left and Antony on the right and trigger-happy Bruno through the middle.
I'd imagine Cody will add a lot of firepower to Liverpool.
For a wide player, he's has deceptively good finishing with both feet and head as well.
Being quite tall and nippy certainly helps.
Overall, it's good that all these exciting talent comes to EPL.
Mohammed Kudus, Enzo, Kolo Muani, and the likes certainly worth a mention.

He’s only just becoming a 1 in 2 forward in an awful league at 23yo playing for one of the better sides. I think all the hype is a damning indictment of the quality in the forward market at the minute. Probably never been as poor as it is right now.

Yeah make this CAF bit more fed up

It would've been better if you quoted the same posters flip-flopping instead of generalising.

I am glad we didn't go for him. Having watched him extensively in the world cup, he was hardly involved in the matches, although tbf to him he did score some good goals.

But as we have seen with Nunez and several other strikers from foreign leagues, you need to have alot going for you in Premier League to succeed. He is still far too raw. He runs with the ball very awkwardly, he is not a liveware, who is a nuisance even if he is not scoring, infact you would not even notice him in the match if he does not score.

You have to wallow over us missing out

Is there actually any evidence of him playing the number nine role in a 4231/433? There’s clearly a massive gap at Liverpool in his favourite position, we already have several players - including Garnacho, who everyone seemed pretty keen on giving game time to when he was scoring a winner in the last Premier League game.

It’s quite obvious we decided against signing him if he was available for that price. I’m sure in previous years we’d have done so without much of a plan of how to use him - see Di Maria - however, it does seem like we’ve decided he’s not right long term for what we need upfront. If he was actually a striker, there would be cause for this kind of reaction.
He didn't even play there for NL I believe? And they don't even have a 9

You're allowed one post of knee jerk remorse like a 90s boy band break up

The worse part about this is the nagging feeling that we didnt go for Gakpo not because he wasnt a good fit, but because we didnt wanna pay up.

Wouldnt be surprised if our signing ends up being Memphis on loan.

He's not someone I know a lot about, he looked okay in the World Cup but then we've been down that road before, buying someone just because they had a good tournament, and it seldom ends well.

What is clear though is that we need another striker after letting Ronaldo go, arguably we needed one even before that.

If we expect to qualify for the CL with only Rashford and Martial (who is fit every second month) then we are deluding ourselves.

Think I am gonna join most people throwing in the towel on us with this because seems safer

PSV have actually done well to get £50m for him if reports are to believed. 37+13 in add-ons.

That makes much more sense than us going for him. We simply have too many left wingers and Gakpo is primarily a left winger. Buying a left winger for over 50m just to see whether we can convert him into a striker would be illogical. He looked very good during WC but Memphis also looked incredible in Dutch NT when we bought him.

Completely true but many think it's the end of the world he has gone to the scousers

It's still value though. We spent way more for Antony
Our need for a Inverted right winger was much greater. And ten Hag had the option of going for Gakpo but decided to sign Antony, which made much more sense as far as team balance is concerned.

It'll be interesting to see if Garnacho a 400k signing can reach a similar level to Gakpo in the future.
