Kalidou Koulibaly | Chelsea

Interesting to see if he gets the Martinez treatment in the media

You can’t have a centre back who has an alliterative name in the Premier League! That’s why Stefan Savic failed! People will see that as an easy target!

He can become a bit complacent at times and while his body still served him well in those days against 2nd rate strikers in Italy, he surely cannot afford that in the much more physical Premier League.

Comically shit today. Needs the settling hand of big Harry next to him….

So funny coming on the here after a player has had a poor game. The over reaction is hilarious.

Quite slow on the turn at times, all that bulk can be a hindrance.

I have a feeling every PL team will now target his height

I thought he was quite dodgy against Spurs last weekend as well but the goal had everyone blinded

It is what it is. That said, half of what is said in this and the Gallagher thread is said in jest.

No bump?

He looks very clumsy thus far. Heavy and over-committing in actions. Certainly primed for card accumulation.

If the new manager goes to a back 4, does he get in the team?

So far definitely not on the same level as Rudiger was last season.

Flop of the season? I can’t think of anybody worse unless there’s somebody blindingly obvious that I just can’t think of?

Our failure to sign him was an indication that the club lacked knowledge and ambition according to the experts on here. Apparently £100m was reasonable for a “generational” defender.
He was tremendous 4/5 years ago. In the years 2016-2020 he was widely considered the best defender in Serie A. But there were no guarantees he was going to be a Nesta or a Thiago Silva (players capable of staying that good deep into their mid thirties). Napoli didn’t want to sell him cheap back then. But I’d rather have overspent money on him back then than on any of the bums we kept recruiting.

So bad. Chalobah should really be in the team ahead of him. No business starting on current form.

He honestly reminds me of Maguire when he's at his worst.

So slow and clumsy. He looked out on his feet today by about the 70th minute.

I don’t know if he’s been as calamitous as that but he’s been extremely bad.

I mean there's still time for him to turn it around I suppose but i'd seriously doubt it. He looks so poor.

I said in the other thread though I think all season you've played well in the league once, maybe twice. Clearly something not right at Chelsea, not the best environment for a new signing to walk into.

Yeah you’re not wrong. It’s been a disastrous season in many different ways. I haven’t enjoyed it at all.

Weird signing anyway, as it felt his time had passed for a big move. But oh boy, he's been absolutely woeful.

Good player but not really one to cause great concern.
Wrong side of 30 and another stop gap signing like Silva. Will also be interesting to see how he adapts to the PL given his age and the fact his background is predominantly in Italy. Also a bit suspect in the air.

Best years certainly behind him but if he adapts can help Chelsea steady things following the loss of Rudiger.
Don’t mean to be. I just don’t think he’s a dead cert to be as successful as being made out nor do I think it’s the kind of signing that upgrades you from the previous season.

I get accused of picking on oppo fans but quite a few people jumped on me when I posted this in the summer.

Ultimately it was another clumsy signing.

4 year deal on 300k per week.

This should have been a worrying sign… They used to prefer to let their best players see the contact out rather than sell for a reduced price.

I read something about Napoli having money problems and that they were trying to get their existing players to restructure their contacts to lower wages. Koulibaly and Napoli were engaged in a standoff and that opened the door for Chelsea.

Probably averages out their defensive recruitment seeing as T. Silva is going to probably be brilliant till he's 50.

He’s one defender I wanted us to sign. He was a beast at Napoli but it hasn’t worked out so far at Chelsea. Don’t know if that’s because of their system or what.

Nah. £100 million for Antony looks much worse. Philips to City looking bad too. £30 million for Koulibaly isn’t that bad. I think he was okay under Tuchel. I remember him having a good game against Spurs. I don’t think Koulibaly had much help from Azpi and was often isolated against Forest’s winger.
